The way I look at it, 300 BLK wasn't developed to replace or unseat any other rifle cartridge. It was developed as a more lethal alternative to 9MM sub guns. In that context, and within the parameters of a small, maneuverable, and quiet CQB weapon, it excels. If it weren't for cost and SBR/suppressor tax stamp requirements, 300 BLK ought to be the more sought after cartridge for 99% of civilian personal defense scenarios.

Everyone should have a AR pistol in 300aac it’s the modern day MP5 just more effective and extremely affordable. 300 aac guns shouldn’t have barrels over 10 inches in my opinion the best it 7.5 you get plenty of velocity to make those Barnes bullets expand beautifully and a 10 year old can ring a steel 6” plate put to 100 yards with a red dot sight on it. As far as the suppressor that’s if you have the money then hell yeah but subsonics or going to be less effective and kill your overall range . I’ve switched back to a linear compensator on mine with supersonic ammo and if you don’t have time to grab your ear protection it will greatly reduce the ear ringing effect and although I wouldn’t recommend always doing it in a matter of self defense sure you’ll be fine . Also I live half a mile from a neighbor if god forbid I had to fire my subcompact rifle caliber defensive gun in middle of the night to defend myself I’d like to draw some attention. Now if I was going hog hunting at night then I want my suppressor and I still wear my ear pro then even .

I just checked and a few of my sources are still providing and selling .224 Valkyrie at reasonable prices. Perhaps it has better external ballistics than even .223 Rem and that might be a reason to gear up for it. The main reason I have any 300 Blackout is my AR pistols are 300 Blackout. I bought the AR pistol for traveling on my motorcycle because it will fit in my saddle bag. Another reason is I'm not a believer of the 5.56 ammo performing well out of a pistol length barrel. To me the 300 Blackout makes more sense in the pistol platform. I do have one 300 Blkout AR rifle for hunting purposes. As for mixing up magazines, I use tan magazines for 300 BKout exclusively and when I am loading them, I do not have any 5.56 ammo anywhere near. Also my magazines are loaded before I go to the range. I also have tan furniture only on my 300 Blkouts as a reminder of tan magazines go with tan on the firearm. Like Nuttin, my main defensive rifles are 5.56 and that is the majority of my ammo.

This round was meant to work in weapons with the same manual of arms as the M4 but with a mission set that was more akin to the mp5. It was designed to be very short barreled and suppressed and never intended for mid range engagement. It hits like an AK, not a 9mm, and It's really good out to 250. It's a very specific tool for a very specific purpose. To judge it on the general merits of the 556 or 762 x 39 is not a good comparison. It's an expensive specialty item that now sees more engagement with hogs than people.

Kind of, but in the civilian market most people don't really hold to that same performance envelope. There are a lot of .300 blk pistols running around, but a TON of 16" rechambered AR's and derivatives. Most people don't want the hassle of a true SBR, so they either compromise with a braced pistol that's pretty short to begin with, or get a long rifle and say they'll get around to cutting it down and getting the stamp sometime, someday, maybe..... In the civilian market, we don't get full access to use gear and kit as intended. Kinda like how we don't get the as-designed, rightful ammo for the 5.7x28, or the full spectrum of utility for a semiauto .50. They can design it for whatever they want, but if there are significant hurdles for the average civvie shooter, they'll most often avoid them.

Guys come on, the 7.62x39 has good ballistics in short barrels too. The only reason is too shoot something comparable, reliably, in an ar15. Which for whatever reason 7.62x39 doesn't do very well. The idea of using subsonics is stupid, why not use 9mm subsonic? If you reduce the velocity that much it's literally the equivalent. The round is a gimmick.
@sixtofive3 жыл бұрын
@@codywhitney3404 Why not use a 9mm sub sonic? Because you're using a bullet that's nearly double the weight in a 300 blk sub sonic. The energy delivered to the target will be substantially higher. Personally, if we're discussing defensive loads, I still prefer the high velocity 110 gr loads. In sub sonic loads you're still getting power equivalent to max load 45 colt or mid range 44 magnum. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference. 9mm will still be very effective if you do your part and put the shots where they need to go.

Nutn states that it is a really good round. Just that for his POU the 5.56 works best. He also says that if you want to use it cool as it is a great system. If you live in a terrain where distance is not an issue, I don't, then the 300 is much more of a great overall system. Pretty easy to make the argument that in a city it is better than the 5.56 or 7.62x39. The only thing that kills it up to this point is cost. Can you afford to feed it? And if you can would you be better off with 4 rounds of 5.56 or 7.62 to each 300? Hopefully the cost comes more in line.
@JL-pj6kk3 жыл бұрын
If 300blk ever gets as common and to the cost of 5.56, I will shoot 300blk almost exclusively. However the chances of that happening is basically zero, so it will be saved as a specialty round, that is used for very specific purposes. Great gun for young/new shooters with subsonics, suppressed.

It will never be as common. Like ever

Might happen sooner than most think. As long as 5.56 is the NATO cartridge it'll be cheaper. But 300BLK is getting very popular, pre-plandemic is was getting pretty darn cheap, and now Wolf sells steel case 300BLK. Then if the military does switch to this 6.8 they're looking at 5.56 prices will go up as well. 300BLK will always be more expensive to make simply because there's more bullet. But the price difference could soon be negligible.
@newerest13 жыл бұрын
if you reload there's no reason to not go with 300 blackout. reload a couple hundred to a thousand with cast bullets for training, a couple hundred of some nice projectiles for home defense. keep training at a even higher volume with 22lr/5.56. there's really no reason to not go with a 300 blackout for home defense
@hackmedia77553 жыл бұрын
There is nothing really special about the 300BLK round when you think about reloading. The case is a trimmed 5.56 case. The bullet is really a 308 bullet. The problem is primers and it's the same problem for everything right now. If you don't want to reload then it's easy to stick with 7.62x39.

@@hackmedia7755 subsonic + super fast twist rates like 1:5. I hate Q as a company, but the owner has done a lot for development of 300blk. Companies like Sig are now using 1:5 twist, and other companies like discreet ballistics and Lehigh are making monolithic bullets designed to expand at subsonic velocities. You go from a 200ish grain bullet from subsonic and switch to a Barnes 110 tac load you now have a cartridges with similar ballistics to a 7.62x39. Within 100 yards, out of an 8” barrel Barnes tac 110gr beats a mk262 77gr OTM out of a 10.3 barrel. Think backpack gun/truck gun. It’s not a cartridge for everything. If Barnes 110 wasn’t $40 a box I’d make it work for just about anything. But for a small concealable rifle/pistol. 300blk beats PCC on performance and it beats 556 in the same size gun. Cool thing about 300blk too is for training, 556 recoil is about the same and again within 100 yards POI is going to be negligible between the two. So it’s not like you have stock up thousands of rounds for it, just enough to train every once in awhile and to keep ready to go.

My POU is that in a without rule of law situation, I need a compact suppressed weapon that is very lethal against generally unarmored people within 100 yards. With that POU, it is hard to beat a 5 to 9 inch Sig MCX in 300 BLK that I can fold and keep in a backpack. I can have magazines of very quiet subsonic ammo, and quickly swap it to a magazine of supersonics that punch a bit harder and still benefit from suppression. The advantage is you can adapt just about any .30 cal bullet to it and it uses regular magnum pistol powders. It’s generally easy to load for and some 110g loadings will exceed or equal 7.62x39. If you want you can make your own brass out of 5.56. Standard AR parts work and interchange. In the end it’s a fine 0-200 yard cartridge.

Great video Nutn but I think you missed one of the big advantages of the 300BO, short barreled effeincy. A 5.5 inch barreled 300blk gun with supers can have he same energy as a 10.5 inch 5.56 and about 4x the energy of a 9mm with a 6-8 barrel. I think all your points comparing full size 300blk/7.62x39 in rifles/carbines are valid and well thought out but, at least in my understanding, 300blk SBRs was intended, and do best as, a replacement for both the Mk18 style weapons and 9mm subguns. Factoring in cost is absolutely a fair critism in this poi though.
@fanman81023 жыл бұрын
I wondered if anyone would say it. With the right barrel length it has the same ballistic performance as 7.62x39 in a gun that’s nearly half the length and half the weight of an AK-47. Purchase a 5.56 upper and you have a multi purpose platform. Course the cost per round is an issue if someone believes it is. If you think 300BO is cost prohibitive, you’re right.

One thing I didn't anticipate when shooting suppressed subsonic 300 blk was that it's not impressively quiet unless you're shooting in a wide open space outdoors (like most of the shooting footage in this video). Indoor range or under a roof over an outdoor range or a range located in a swath cut in the woods or surrounded by large berms, it's actually kinda loud. Keep it in mind if you're about getting a suppressed gun to shoot 300 blk subs for the neat quiet.

300 black subs suppressed for home defense is ideal. Ripping off a 556 round in close quarters is suboptimal for your hearing.
@alphacentary Жыл бұрын
Idk for me a PCC can do the same for less cost. A high bullet weight sub 9mm, 40 S&W, 10mm, etc. can all fill that roll. You will likely go deaf in close quarters anyway because the other guy doing the home invading will likely fire back with super sonic rounds unless you have the, and I generally doubt this under most circumstances, element of surprise. I'm not saying 300 blk is a bad cartridge, but it attempts to be a weird jack of all trades master of none. That is the crux of the issue it excels at none of them.

Im building my .300 to be my eventual primary home defense weapon. 8” barrel and suppressed. It makes the most sense for that POU and I’d say it’s the best cartridge for that role. Going to use both 7.62x39 and 300 blackout for hunting this year (galil ace with 123 grain underwood controlled chaos at 2450 fps and custom build 10.5 in 300 black with hand loaded 120 grain tac-tx at about 2200 fps). One benefit of 300 black is the available options for projectiles. The 7.62x39 is fairly limited especially if you want something bonded or lead free. Also a huge benefit of 300 black missed in this POU is that with pistol powders the 300 black get a higher percentage of possible velocity out of a much shorter barrel. For instance, my 10.5 300 black pistol gets only a hundred or so fps less than the 7.62 out of a 16 inch barrel. Combine that with the versatility of going subsonic out of the same gun and you have a crazy versitile and compact platform.

I was going to use .300 black as a vehicle gun/travel gun/backpack gun/home defense. A .30 caliber rifle round that chews through vehicles better than 5.56, in a compact package with familiar, intuitive controls and some redundancy in parts within the AR platforms. The vast majority of training can be done with my 11.5 BCM in 5.56 which I have plentiful ammo for, so I don't really need that much ammo in .300 for my other build. 300-500 rounds of 110 grain 300 blackout moving at over 2,100 fps out of a shorter barrel, a couple 20 round mags for backpack or vehicle carry, and a few 30 round mags for reloads. 🤷♂️ And I have a weapon as effective as an AK "pistol" in 7.62x39. Within 100 yards thats major trouble for a threat if i'm doing my part and training and dryfiring and practicing presentations, marksmanship, reloads...which, I am...it can also be used very effectively for hunting, even out of something like a 9" barrel in lightweight supersonic loads. I considered various PCC's for a while and I ended up realizing - why not just use a rifle round in a package that size, if I can. I'm no 300 blackout maximalist but it is a great option to expand your versatility and/or effectiveness in various PDW-style POU's. An ex ranger and contractor buddy of mine mentioned to me last year that they loved .300 blackout subsonic suppressed for hostage situations as well due to lack of overpenetration, and CQB in general due to good reliability in a shorter package than a suppressed 11.5 or MK18 for example.

14:24 .300 blk won’t chamber into a 5.56 barrel. It’s literally almost an 1/8” larger in diameter. The bolt won’t seat. So, unless you encounter some sort of anomaly, it can’t physically happen. Especially with factory ammunition, there’s built-in redundancy to help prevent chambering the wrong caliber into any gun. (Head spacing, cartridge length, belted casing, rim profile, etc.)

The largest advantage I saw for 300 Blk when I got mine was the ability to use cast and powder coated bullets I make on my own. Makes it cheap and helps feed the AR when things are tough to get. Since in my country 556 is a banned cartridge, and 7.62x39 is restricted to bolt actions only, 300 Blackout is the only logical cartridge for an AR-15 platform. 30cal projectiles are abundant, and not requiring huge powder loads is a big plus (gunpowder is a very restricted and hard to source component). Also, price for commercial ammo is actually very reasonable, considering the alternative is full power cartridges.

It makes sense to me as a reloader to have AR pistols chambered in it. I use a Harbor Freight 3" mini chop saw and Squirrel Daddy jig to chop down standard 5.56 cases. I'm a bullet caster and powder coater as well so I cast my own bullets using a Lyman 2-cavity bullet mold.

The only good reason for .300 Blackout is shooting suppressed. I don't shoot suppressed so if I spend that kind of money on ammo, I'll buy .308. I have stocked up on .308 (7.62 x 51) surplus ammo for much less money. Friend of mine bought a Daniel Defense .300 BO pistol for $1800 and has yet to shoot it. Meanwhile I have several thousand rounds of .223/5.56, 7.62 X 39 and 7.62 x 51 and 9mm. Same story with 6.8 SPC, good cartridge but cost more than .308, why waste your money.

I’ve only got a few calibers on my rifle weapons systems. 5.56, 7.62x39, 30-30 & .22lr. I focus on ammo that I can get pretty cheap and I’m bulk. 30-30 being an exception.

300 blackout is great if you reload, neck damaged 5.56 cases can easily be converted using a harbor freight micro chop saw with jig, size and trim. It's also extremely powder efficient, using around 1/3 to 1/2 the powder of 5.56, biggest downside is 7.62 bullets cost at least twice to 3x as much as 5.56 bullets.

I've noticed that as well 62 grain green tip I use in a 10.5 cqb setup and the 69 grain aren't as accurate either.

How did you get the US palm mag to work with the ks47? They don't fit in mine
