I lived in a marina in Sooke for 12 years. Lots of people ( weekend warriors) launched their boats forgetting the drain plug.The boat I have now I replaced the wood in the transom and stringers and I eliminated the drain plug. The little bit of rainwater that finds its way in gets pumped out with electric pump. One less thing to remember.. ( P.S. Nearly all the boats I have towed in had only one engine !!! Be safe! CHEERS from Canada!

If I lived near the coast I would think about buying a boat, my interest is inshore fishing more like the videos you make when you fish in the harbour. I never see myself going further out than a couple of miles maximum. This video was still very interesting but is a class above what I could afford and on top of the cost of purchase you have the maintenance and possibly mooring costs. I am sure this video will help a lot of people out, thanks for posting.

That was fantastic for anyone thinking bout buying a boat, well done! The only thing not mentioned was a displacement hull vessel. My Arran 16 does only 6 knots all day like it or not, but a typical full day out uses 3 1/2 litres of fuel & it is the most stable boat I've been in, similar to the original Orkney Longlner, but more stable. Well done again for being the one wearing a lifejacket.
@ashleyhoward89263 жыл бұрын
If you had a mate with a Plymouth pilot, that would be great!

The boats I compared are your usual "trailer boats" your displacement boats are usually "mooring boats". If that makes sense.

@allosaurusfragilis77822 жыл бұрын
There's pros and cons to everything of course. I'm disabled and find my rib ideal for me, because I can get round the whole boat, get on and off easily, using the tubes to sit on. The tubes also make it very stable at rest. It doesn't move at all, even if someone stands on a tube. Ribs also cope well in rough conditions...if you know what you're doing haha Negatives.....very pricey, these days. Not laid out for fishing really. A serious fisherman will likely not use a rib. I'm what you'd call a casual fisherman. I mainly just like getting out on the water and enjoying the scenery and wildlife. Enjoying the channel, great stuff.
@TheFishLocker2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t class a RIB as a bad weather boat. But are a lot of fun on nice days. 😊👍🏻

Great video as always. The only thing I don't agree with is having no auxiliary outboard. It takes seconds for a fault to happen. And as I experienced on my last trip out even a brand new outboard comes with faults luckily it was only a fuel problem but it makes you realise how important a auxiliary outboard is.

My friend bought an Orkney 520 from Falmouth (Moody Blue).We fish out of Plymouth Sound out to Hands Deep, Edystone and around the coast.Great boat but he needs a bigger boat ( famous last words). He did look at upping the HP from an Evinrude 30 but on the 520 spec it recommends 30HP with a max of 35.I have been around boats all my life and my Dad was a marine engineer who taught me to look at the speed you require at 3/4 throttle which gives the best speed to fuel use.

Have owned or fished from all 4 and the orkney is and was by far the best in our waters. Surprised how slow you run. We ran ours at 18 to 20 knots all day every day two up with a 30 yamaha. The build quality was superb. Put some rails on it to increase freeboard and buoyed the anchor. None of the boats are truely safe walkarounds, better off to stay safe on the deck! Bought mine brand new as a package in 2000 for 7500quid, for sale recently for ten grand!! Stability wise, 2 of us one side lifting pots and tope over 50pound over no problem. Went on to learn chartering trade on offshore 105, starfish 8 and starfish 10 then a 10m cat. Now looking for a boat for me and me boy to fish from and orkney is only boat on my radar.
@TheFishLocker3 жыл бұрын
They are wonderful aren't they. My decision for the Warrior was to do with what we want the boat for over the next few years. And for the size they have more space inside and run faster. I am very surprised to hear you were regularly getting 20 knots with a 30 with 2 of you onboard. I think mine has done 20 knots maybe 5 times in the years Ive owned her. 😊

Me Again. One for the total novice like me. When looking at getting a boat and will be storing at home. Shorter boat does not always means narrower and don't forget the width of the trailer. My first boat was a 17feet Dell Quay Dory ( with the optional small cabin) with a Yamaha 85hp two stroke outboard and i had it for 6years from year 1999 to 2005... was a great boat but sold it because the offer was too good to refuse back then, I regretted it later.

Great video (and the channel) but don't agree with not needing a backup motor because "If you can't trust the engine then you shouldn't put out to sea". Agree with that statement itself of course, but even the best cared for and normally rock solid engine can have an unexpected problem one day, or be exposed to something that causes it a problem. Maybe the lower gear casing hits something solid in the water, which is not uncommon, and incurs damage. Things break sometimes. At least you have a Yammy though - solid motors! Understand if it's causing a balance issue as well, but personally wouldn't want to head out without a little backup motor. to keep away from rocks or get myself home slowly if I ever have an issue. Anything I can do to make sure I never have to call for and use resource of the lifeboat/coastguard is a win for me. You always seem like a sensible & pragmatic fella though so I know you know what you're doing. Keep up the great work anyway. Mine is an old Coastworker 180 (18foot console boat) by the way. Great boat with a ton of deck space (no cuddy though), and quick, but bangs a bit in a chop! One other great boat suggestion for people on a budget but willing to renovate is a Teal 16-23' fisher. Same hull as Warrior but built in the 70s & 80s (they have a cuddy but quite low) so more likely to need re-decking or the transom looking at.

Only two times your happy when you own a boat, is one when you buy it & two when you sell it, a money pit ! Good video.
@TheFishLocker3 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. A money pit if you buy the wrong boat and don’t consider the costs before hand. And I have been sad every time I have sold a boat.

My wishful thoughts are more for access to a super yacht though, unless theres a significant lottery windfall or i could come up with a good business model to get backing it will only be a dream... Thank you for this video though, much to be learned from it!

Alaska 500 were very good fishing platforms back in the day, hard to find a good second hand one these days though.

Thank you for all the info in this great video. I will be looking for a Quicksilver, or similar, when I leave Florida & get back to England next year. I know I'll be struggling with the weather for some time, compared to here. I want a pilothouse, so I can hopefully get the wife out on the water with me. I'm excited to go home, but I know I'll need somewhere to hide, when the temp drops below 15c.

Interesting boats you have there! Really leaning towards a 21' Arima Sea Ranger for myself. The Pacific is a harsh master and I'd like to get out for tuna (albacore) now and again. Bout as small as I can go and still go that far offshore (as much as 40+ miles). Also still small enough to fish the Columbia for salmon or lakes for trout/kokanee.

2021 Hi there John, WOW. Can you please tell us what Size And Type of Anchor rope you use? Great to see the different boats from the Drone. Attitude in the water was great to see. Congratulations. Essex.

I have zero interest in boats, but as per usual you make any topic or subject interesting JL. The editing of the opening sequence was like something from the Fast Show.🙂

I've got a 18ft Bayliner Trophy with a 135 Mariner Optimax. Love the tub cruises at 23 knots and WOT 40 knots .You get out to where you want tout suite!😁😁😁
