The 6.9l IDI is such a great engine, simple, generally easy to fix, super reliable. I own one now it's in a 1985 F250 standard cab long bed 4x4 6.9l IDI/4 speed. It's my second truck, basically the same as my first one which was an '84 which I kick myself for selling back to the guy I bought it from even if it was for more money than I paid him for it. Excellent, go anywhere trucks that get great miles per gallon than basically every ither truck on the market now. They're not terribly fast😅😂 and they can smoke pretty well under a good load but I'll never sell this one. It's getting new dash top, door cards, new window and door seals, rear disc brake conversion, and some other minor mods, I plan toput a military S250G electronics shelter into the bed as a camper conversion that's going to be perfect for all seasons with the amount of insulation it has. It's going to be a great rig when it's completed!

When you buy a older ford like this gas or diesels you might as wheel test everything on the "can i drive question" floor it over and over put a huge strain on the engine... go uphills, down shift gears constantly auto or stick.. give it power just like you would need to test everything before paying full price no matter what theyre asking... cram breaks down shift put the actual engine threw its test .. see if it leaks.. or anyrhing makes noises just use it like you would... my way was absolutely raise hell in it and it if doesnt hold then leave it especially if it makes a weird noise you dont normally hear after high load most of the ford 7.3 or 6.9 guys try to pass issues off as a fuel issue or a certain valve or fuel issue. Run them hard and pull hard see if the truck has a problem after even up to 30 mins running.. watch for leaks, overheating, or oil drips/ trans drips..
@DonovanBryant924 ай бұрын
I bought a 91 250 for 500$ and the engine has the milky oil and signs of coolant and oil mixing but i plan to tear into it and rebuild cause it spins over nicely and seems fixable compared to the others i saw in the same price range. Engine is a 7.3 idi.

Is the smoke supposed to be clear white like that or black? What do you not want to see.
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
Idi shouldn't smoke much at all if it is running good. White smoke can be cavitation, or bad head gasket. Also can be injectors going bad, or a timing issue if combined with other symptoms. A little black smoke on hard acceleration is normal. Alot of black smoke pump is probably turned up or air filter is clogged. You want consistent smoke color, not sputtery like a miss. Which would indicate a bad cylinder. On start up you will always get the best smoke reading, a bit of white till it warms up is pretty normal. But smoke doesn't always tell the whole story. Still check blowby, make sure it has sufficient power, make sure it is not missing or running poorly etc. You can search reading diesel smoke on Google. Read some articles and get more insight. Thanks for watching.
@samuelsolis6333 Жыл бұрын
@@worthshop Hey man, I really appreciate your time and input on my comment. I actually just finshed test driving a 6.9 IDI 1986, and I tried to see and check everything you mentioned. I did notice when checking the blowby that there was some smoke coming out but it wasn’t much just a bit of white smoke not a lot. You couldn’t really tell but it was something you can catch. I also flipped the oil cap to see if there was blowby but it sat flush. I floored the gas and I saw no black smoke.
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
@Samuel Solis Spunds like you found a decent one. All idi trucks will have a little blowby. You just don't want it chooching like an exhaust pipe.

Turbo question Aspie! My new to me 93 turbo diesel seems to have a stuck closed wastegate. It wont budge either way with a stiff push of the thumb. Does the actuator rod push or pull? Can i lightly tap on it with small hammer after a good WD-40 soaking? I dont want to risk any overboost, so any tricks to freeing it up would be greatly appreciated!

How much would you pay for a 1991 crew cab 4x4 f350 7.3 IDI with 320k miles. Not much rust, likely needs an injection pump. 5 speed , reverse gear grinds a bit. Runs , drives and stops
@worthshop2 жыл бұрын
Me personally, maybe 2k$ but the prices of idi trucks have been going crazy lately. Injection pump will cost you close to another 1k$ a rebuilt transmission will be about $1200, or the rebuild kit if you do it yourself is around $300. I've seen them listed fir 10k$ and 12k$ the last few months. See alot listed for around 5k$ but I also see them stay listed and not sell for a long time. I'd never pay anywhere close to that kind of money for a old pickup, unless fully restored or hot rodded.
@crj12492 жыл бұрын
@@worthshop Went and test drove it. Burns blue and white. Hard to start in Warm weather, Coolant is lower than last time I looked at it. DMF is broken. Blinkers, wipers and headlights dont work. No bumper. Holes in the cab floor. Cab has dents. Loosey goosey steering Blowby isnt terrible but what's odd is the radiator will get blistering hot, cant touch it but the engine is only warm. With all that and 320k miles , it looks like a money pit. Listed at 3000 usd. I'd rather spend 5000 and get something reliable.

The price of idi trucks has gone up alot the last 3 or so years. I was getting them for free before. They were un desired. Then the value has just kept going up. I have noticed the used truck market slowing down alot though. So don't give up hope. At least around where I live up in Washington state, trucks have not been selling... So inevitably owners are lowering their ridiculous prices. Thanks for watching, and God bless.

I would focus on a good engine/ transmission. Solid body not all rotted out. All the interior, lights, switches, door handles, wipers, heat etc etc can be fixed pretty easily as you prioritize.
