Thank you Ken for what you do. There a few things as rewarding as helping people in their greatest time of need. I joined my local Fire Department when I was 17. I very much loved structure, wildland, and EMS until I left at the age of 23 to join the Navy as a Corpsman and continue helping people. Like so many others I was on shift at our small local department when the twin towers fell on the other side of the country. We were all wanting in the day room devastated. The Fire Department shaped my life and is something I always cherish.

I worked wildland firefighting in California during the late 90’s, then municipal from 2000-2018. I miss the wildland, that was some good times. And yes, those old DT466 engines just keep going. International has that whole chassis and drive train dialled in. Looking at the numbering on the front bumper, I’ve worked fires with that engine.

On those old engines there is a set of fuses on the front firewall that are covered under a coating. They often fail and are not readily visible. Fairly common we have them go out on our fire engines. Especially after hard off-road use on a fire

I've been running DT466 engines for over 29 years, we have only lost one engine to a blown head gasket, and one turbo. Not bad. My old truck is 22 years old (4700 model) and still ready for a days work. Pre 2008, sign me up!

Hell yes Mark. I have owned a few 4700s, and one other 4900. They are great trucks for sure. This one is going to take a bit of cleaning but trust me when I say the engine purrs like a kitten. Next video is a good one.

We've still got a 98 international fire truck in my department, it's a DT466E, its old and unrefined but it's a good old truck, never causes any fuss and keeps going to work

We still have the old model 14 fire engines with the dt466 as our reserve engines. They just won’t die, and the thing will pump a hose lay with a screaming pump all day and be no worse for wear.

@@OnefastAZfarmtruck First time I ran into them was while working for the Oregon Department of Forestry back in 1998. Our 500gal trucks were single cab short wheel base 7400 with the DT466. The trucks could turn around on most BLM roads without needing to back up. better turning radius than our type 6s.

One of these retired Forest Service Wildland Engines would make a great Extricatíon Rig for Car Accidents. Plenty of room in that rear compartment for Cribbing, and a set of Cutters and Spreaders. I would have the Tools on the bottom of the Compartment, and Cribbing in the upper area. Other Various Hand and Power Tools can be placed in the Side Compartments, along with a set of Air Bags. Re load the hose reels with fresh booster hose, and maybe add a Pre connected 1.5 or 1.75 inch handline up in the hose bed. A couple SCBA's in the Cab, and a few bags of Oil Dry up in the bed, refill the Water Tank, and foam tank if it is so equipped.

defiantly would be a solid rescue. I'm not sure how many GPM the pump can do but 500 gallon tank it would be fine for vehicle fire as well.

There were two issues with these i experienced when driving them. First is fuel filters. They hate certain fuels and plug up fast on the cheap stuff. Second is fuses on the firewall tend to jiggle loose if the truck gets worked hard offroad. They are hidden (why i will never know) under a coating. Other than that those old rigs are basically bulletproof. Oh for the rat smell an ozone generator works wonders. Just follow all the instructions if you use one

Our mid nineties DT-466 fire engines are very picky on fuel - filters plug very easily, our local bus mechanic taught us to pull and clean them, what a difference...

You definitely wouldn't want 4x4 a truck that size with the 4x4 option would be useless. Our department has one and it never sees offroad because of how damn heavy the thing is. It will just sink in the dirt.

Good job bringing that truck back to life. Model 62 B fire engine. There are tons of those in local fire departments now. It is actually a 1998 model International ("W" in the 8th-to-the-last place of the VIN means 1998 model, "V" for 1997). The Forest Service considers the year of completion as the year of the truck. Regular cab model 42 engines--with "driveline retarders"?--"drive like 4x4s." The Forest Service budget means not too many 4x4 engines. The Forest Service's 88-page model 62 engine operator guide can be Google'd and downloaded online with specifications and troublshooting, etc. Vehicle # 6233 is noted in it!

If your phone/camera uses a USB cable for recharging you can get one of those lithium ion car battery boosters. They come with USB ports that you can plug your USB cable into to recharge or power your device with. They also usually have one port for devices that require more than the usual amount of current, like a laptop computer.

I am a retired wildland firefighter and I suggest that if you are taking the box off do so carefully and repurpose it on your property and make it fully operational. Get a large water supply tank and you have your own firefighting capability a whole lot better than a hose. You also might get a discount on your home insurance. I live rural like you and would love to have that protection.

11r22.5s are still availible. as ar low pro 24.5 .(same height/smaller sidewall) your truck uses budd wheels. and aluminum versions are availible. I have a few spares if you want.

We had a 1994 4300 box truck,that DTA 466 was a good motor,however it had the 6+1 seven speed and had issues with the shift forks coming loose and wiping out a few parts , in all fairness we ran it heavy and hard it would really roll on down the road

several of them have. We even have a few of them at local departments around here. This one is out of California and because of State law it can't be used there because of the EPA diesel emission laws they have put into place.

@@PaperBeatsRock most of the FS engines in CA operate in mountainous areas during the summer where pre established roads are the only option. True off-roading isn't really a thing like it is on BLM land so that's why 2wd works.

Also they over charge shippers and under pay the drivers. I seen videos and heard stories from my friends of them finding the same load on a different load board at the truck stop for a different price. i witness it back in 2008 when i was riding alone trucking with a friend.

I'm removing the bed, tank, and pump. I'm turning the truck into a hauler. I use to do structure and wildland back in the day but we never carried SCBAs on our wildland trucks. I can see why though when you're the only agency around.

Might I make a suggestion if you're going to take the firefighting body and pump off do it carefully please and advertise it because of volunteer fire department that may not have a lot of money may want to buy that off of you so be careful when disconnecting the pump and taking off the body you might be able to make your money back that you spend on a truck just by selling the body in a pump in the tank.. there's a lot of poor little volunteer fire departments that would pay a couple thousand dollars for that body pump and tank

Yes sir. I was planning on giving the system a proper test. I'm pretty sure that the pump packing is old, dry, and brittle and it will probably not pull a draft but still it needs to be properly tested so I can inform the next owner of the pump what to expect. There is a few smaller volunteer departments around here that may end up wanting it. We also have a huge amount of private wildland fire fighters that build their own trucks and run them under contract with federal and state. I'm sure any of them would be happy to pick up one at a discount price. shoot even the hose reels are a huge chunk of change.

Auction means state employees can't buy it. I can't tell you how many times I picked up a truck from the state that they either bought new ones or just didnt use it. Bought a 14 E350 bus with new tires, batteries and all preventative maintenance even a full tank of gas for 700$ drove it home. Had it for over a year.

So the $1,000'ish for it isn't all that bad but what did the the parts cost? Tows ain't cheap and semi's ain't cheap🤔 I'd love to get some of the stuff too but worried it'd be stuck or I'd need to get a better runner.

I was worried about transport. It was 519miles from where it was to my house and as a disabled vehicle cost is traditionally more. It cost me a total of $1,770 for the transport. Now there is defiantly going to be more cost that goes into this after a bare minimum of getting it running and driving on the road safely before I start to do all my custom work. I will be doing a video about that to give everyone a proper break down so you know the real cost it was to me.

For sure. I was thinking of maybe doing a swap over to 4wd. They got MRAP t cases at the auction and can put some mrap axles under it. I will defiantly need to look at proper gears and trans set up for the hwy though.

@@PaperBeatsRock for gearing and highway use i wouldn't. itll be reved up and angry under load. if your gonna use it for a hauler I'd think simpler. the old powerline IH trucks were 4x4 and a donor might be better for 4x4 and still give you decent use.

yes it requires air to open the brakes. It can have an air leak but as long as the compressor is strong enough to over come it then the brakes will be fine. The air leak still needs to be addressed though.

Never understood why they would make an off-road wildland truck without 4x4. Limits the ability of the truck not just off road but in adverse weather conditions.

I agree but in my 6 years that I was a engine slug doing wildland firefighting here in Oregon 95% of the time the trucks were on gravel BLM roads. Our biggest problem was wheel base. Trucks that can't turn around on those roads were a even larger problem.

CA is pretty dry. I did off-roading for years in a 4x2 Toyota with a little bit of lift, and rarely had an issue. In the areas that get a lot of snow, you'd never want to go at those times anyway. They build most of the fire roads to be pretty mild.

@@xray606 agree the roads here are easy. But the fact is you don’t know where the engine will go, what state, or what area and when. It can be sent to Montana on a strike team. There are some harsh fire roads, but the engine doesn’t have to be on a road. And off roading in a Toyota is way different than a truck with water sloshing around and all your weight on a back axel. This was a Northern CA rig, tons of harsh fire roads and off road areas deep in the woods.

Because experience tells them it's not needed, and you're better off matching the tool to the job. It's the reason I switched my tires to a less aggressive tread... there will be times I can use the more aggressive tread, but if 99% of my drive doesn't require it, I'd rather have a smoother ride.

I will have to double check but I believe that its 5,000hrs. so if you take that and Xs it by 60 that will give you 300,000 miles equivalent .
