@@ApexRSVL I agree it can be easy but sometimes when you rock up to a country and u need a sim in airport, you just pay for it and they just put it in for you, and some of those don’t offer esim services at the airport. I recently discovered there are apps now where you can buy travel esims which I think I will try next time, as u usually get ripped off at the airport.

its cause they have huge issues with men taking photos up women's skirts so they made it a rule to have to have shutter sound in some of those asain countries. i thought it was a korean thing though mainly. ik its a law in korea that all cameras need to make a shutter sound to try and deter predators from taking upskirt photos. i dont think its a law in japan but almost all cameras have a sound cause of that issue, and i know it is a law in korea for a fact though. they can get around it though by using a 3rd party app that doesnt make a shutter sound. it probably stopped making the sound cause it sense you were not in japan anymore after updating it.

I had an iPhone XS purchased in Japan, and the shutter sound wasn’t removable. It was, however, quieter when starting to record video compared to photos, so I would start a video recording and use the shutter button there as that would be silent

It seems like if have an non-Japanese AppleID, it disables the shutter sound as well. I have a US AppleID but have now had two iPhones here in Japan, neither one had the shutter sound. Also the iPhone 12 I brought with me from the US didn't have a shutter sound even when I changed my location and switched to UQ Mobile.
