My guess is that most of that rust is a result of the holes drilled to put those running boards on. You seem to get all caught up in things being unsightly. Which I guess is important when you’re talking about a luxury sedan, or a sports car, but that’s a truck, a shop truck at that. Just keep the power steering fluid topped off and drive it.
@jamesmedina20625 жыл бұрын
Barry Fields you raise a good point. Nobody ever got the proper training on how to properly install the running boards so they probably contributed to the out of control rust. At a minimum the owner or owners didn’t stop the problem from progressing.
@joystix115 жыл бұрын
From what I've seen, they come from factory with threaded holes for running boards, and same goes for the Pilots.
@barryfields29645 жыл бұрын
Kai Borah I just watched two videos on ridgeline running board installation. And there appears to be holes in the frame for running boards. But the ones on this one appear to be mounted right to the rocker panels. But I could be wrong. When he puts his foot on it the whole rocker panel moves.
@JVR_Funwithdesign5 жыл бұрын
My thoughts too. The rust on this car is odd. The rockers are so bad one would expect the rest of the bottom to look awful, but it's actually not bad. The rocker issue is pretty isolated.
@joystix115 жыл бұрын
@@JVR_Funwithdesign As a rust belt resident, we usually see rockers as the first to go. They're in-line with the wheels, and therefore receive most of the road salt/slush. Specifically, this is the worst rust area on my pilot, which is near identical to the Ridgeline underneath.

Where in the Netherlands this amount of rust on the rocker panels would easily total out the truck. No way this ever passes or MOT inspection. I mean rocker panels on a unibody construction are a big part of the construction and if this thing would involve in an accident it would kink right where it rusted through. I would definitely at least bodge it with some fresh metal and undercoating before taking the road trip, just to make it solid again and a bit safer.

That did not include paint or body work just cutting out the old rockers and putting new ones in. Took about two hours I waited while the work was being done. I did the paint afterwards using shaker cans and it looks good. As for the other rust issues it looks likes they put a paint over rust product. If done correctly the applied will prevent further rusting from occurring but it does have to be applied correctly.

You'll remove the rusty part and weld some new sheetmetal, but it might (and sadly, often does) go bad again as it's very hard to remove 100% of it. In your case, you live in Florida, so the amount of time before it comes back might be a lot longer. The "frame" looks to be in pretty good condition, I'd say it's worth it and I'm keen to see the content you show us doing it.

Buying a Ridgeline was a great idea, just this one is not a good example. To everyone saying that the rust is moderate/no big deal....is that true for a unibody vehicle?? Sure, for a body on frame truck, rotten rocker panels can be considered a cosmetic issue. But for a unibody, those panel are structural and make a significant contribution to the chassis' strength. A full repair by removing all rusted parts and welding in new metal is required, I believe.

I live in Montreal Canada. Buy a can of rust check, it will stop the rust from spreading. might seem too late to rust proof it but its not, it really stops the rust from forming in other places. we use salt on our road during the winter and i can straight up tell you the ridge line wasn't built for that. they rust pretty bad here if owners don't get them properly rust proofed. all in all though i would say you got a great deal, dont concern yourself with the rust, its just a beater. if you grease it up it will last longer than the drivetrain.

Nice video! As for the rust, it's not terrible (I've seen much worse) but it likely would not pass safety inspections in some states since the rocker panels are an integral part of crash protection and yours are very compromised. Perhaps this could be a good vehicle to practice your mig welding skills. New rockers are probably pretty cheap for this and the paint doesn't have to be awesome since it's so low on the body...the perfect job to practice your body and metal skills! That would make it safer, too. Good luck!

If he doesn't care about appearance, you can buy replacement panels that you weld in after cutting out the rusted ones. Easy peasey and just touch up with some bondo and then coat in ribberized rocker guard. If this will be a work vehicle, who cares? I have a rusted out F150 that I just want to pass safety. I took it in for a pre-inspection and the mechanic said "foam and go" (fill the rusted areas with spray foam and a skim coat of bondo). I did that on the fenders and literally, the edge was all that was left and now? I can grab the fender with one hand and shake the whole truck.

Here in northern New England, that's a common sight for untreated vehicles; rockers, wheel arches, door and fender bottoms, and body seams. On trucks: frame cross-members, bumpers, spring shackles and shock mounts, wheel arches, rockers, and cab corners. Rust is brutal because of the chloride slurries they put on the roads in the Winter plus the chlorides they put on gravel areas to keep the dust down. When I look to buy a used vehicle, I make sure it is from down south, even if it is only two or three years old.

I turned wrenches in Maine for 17 years professionally, both at dealerships and independent garages. I worked at 2 different Toyota dealerships in southern Maine, and yes both inspected Toyota Tacoma and Tundra frames for frame rot/cracks, and also replaced those failed frames with new frames along with an assortment of other new parts along with the frame replacements. So with that said, I have seen and worked on rusted/corroded vehicles, and that ridgeline is far from bad, in fact, that is what I would consider to be an easier vehicle to work on. In the UK, not only do we deal with rust like that all the time (especially on classics) due to the tons of rock salt they spread all over the roads every winter, but it's considered structural so won't pass inspection. In fact even small amounts of body rot or other damage on a car can cause it to fail if they're deemed to pose an injury risk to pedestrians or be too close to a structural suspension point. They just made our inspections even tougher in an attempt to clear the roads of older vehicles (although anything deemed 'historic' i.e. over 40 years old, is exempt from inspection). I visit relatives in Boston (in a state that actually inspects vehicles) and I can't believe what people are allowed to drive over there - last time I saw an old Caddy where the bottom 3-6 inches of the car were basically non-existent. I think our rules on rot are rather strict, but there must be safety implications in allowing the other extreme. In the UK that Honda would essentially be junk and likely need thousands worth of welding just to be legal. But then, it would most probably never been allowed to get into that state in the first place.

Never change transmission fluid on a high mileage car unless you know the maintenance history, you are better off just topping off the fluid.
@andybill3135 жыл бұрын
or better yet drain a bit off to see if it looks good and service accordingly, I have seen honda boxes 30k overdue for a change with fluid that is fine to change and on a honda box if you can you should as they have a lot less fluid in them than most and do tend to fail if you take that approach, speaking from experience having tried it both ways on high mileage hondas and driven them to destruction I would favour a change of fluid on one of these.

Hey samcrac , I rebuild cars and trucks from copart like yourself. I have dealt with my fair share of rust infected trucks and cars especially as I live in the UK,London. We all know that it pretty much always rains in London and is too cold. I would say this level of rust is significantly less than I deal with. I would just send it for acid dipping to remove all rust and the paint, fabricate fresh replacement panels to keep the cost down. It costs me £250-£400 to get it dipped and fabricate fresh parts. it will also give the chance to replace that rack if you want as you will have clear access as you will need to send the shell off.
@veteranoutdoorsman99785 жыл бұрын
The amount of rust isnt bad. I have seen much worse here in Missouri. The isue I have is that on a unibody the rockers are integral to the strength of the car. What your seeing is the same as a rusted frame on a body on frame vehicle. Though sure you could get more rust in other climates this is very close to unsafe because it is a unibody. Much more then that and floors sag and doors dont close properly. The rocker panel is a critical part of the strength of a car with unibody construction.

As for the rust: If the rocker panels are structural, like some Chrysler minivans, this can be a problem. I can't tell for certain, but those don't look like the body will collapse if the rocker panels are gone. So, if the structural parts and floor boards look good, and you live in a relatively rust free area of the country, you can likely drive the truck for several years as it is and it will make a fine work truck.

Honestly @samcrac I live in the UK and a mechanic for over a decade and rust like this on 8-10 year old motors is not unusual, Japanese especially.
