I had a twin turbo with the 410kw engine, and knew it’s history from new as I knew the previous owner. It had lived a pampered life, and the big issues listed by Jim had all been sorted. It was the endless broken coolant pipes (there are two separate cooling systems) that killed the relationship for me. $6k budget to keep it on the road is about right, but it was the tow truck rides that made me get rid of it. Swore off German engineering, and happily traded it on a GR Yaris that I’ve got to this date.

As an ex Mercedes service manager, any AMG, if you can't afford a new one, and sell or part exchange before factory warranty runs out, don't buy one. We sold 6 in my time, 4 of which had engines replaced under warranty. Apart from the engine, Gearboxes and diffs also give problems. Have here in the EU the S212 E63 from 2012 with the newer M157 V8 engine which is just mind-blowing. I only took it to Mercedes's dealership once and never again. Now I have a private Mercedes-only official mechanic who will repair what I choose to be repaired. He is fully qualified by Mercedes and has their computer so every service will go into the online Mercedes-Benz database. In one year ignoring all to fluid/oil changes, I've only had to replace the timing chain and front brake discs + pads. I don't recommend going to the general car mechanic and 100% not for an AMG service.

Back to back Benz videos! Much like the W204 video you recently did these have issues you touched on with the ignition switch and the VGS/mechatronic unit/transmission control/conductor plate(as Jim refers to it). But early W212 chassis vehicles do actually have the exact same steering lock assembly as is seen on the W204 with all it's attendant problems. And as you mention Adam, don't go to the dealer for these issues, aftermarket does a much better job and often much cheaper. For example the aftermarket has the ability to re-use second hand VGS units even though they are part of the immo circuit and dealers will tell you brand new only. Same with ignition switches, they can be re-used to save big dollars. I don't do as much W212 work as I do W204 but I put that down to the sales numbers for the C Class being so much higher than the E in all trims. Also I agree the pre-facelift W212 is a much, much prettier car.

(This is in US) Bought a fully optioned designo package 2014 ML63 3yrs ago w/ 40k miles. Single owner Florida car. Had the foresight to spend $3k to buy an bumper to bumper 5yr warranty. The most recent service bill was over $9k - leaky top timing cover, leaky transmission, 2 worn front air ride struts, cooling system overhaul (has been slowly leaking coolant since day 1), etc etc. warranty covered it all. Was planning to keep it long term b/c the way this thing cruises at 100mph+ is truly something else, but after this service I’ll most likely get rid of it before warranty expires.

@@jamesdanton9033 They did? Diesel W212s are used as taxis all over Europe, and they're pretty well known for being one of the most reliable and best-built modern Mercs. Aside from some easily-scratchable interior trim materials, they hold up really well even at this age and mileage.
@jamesdanton903312 күн бұрын
@ I mean why weren't they used in Australia if they're that reliable?
@The_Ossifrage11 күн бұрын
@ Pricing, probably. Europe can get the base-spec models for relatively cheap, with fabric interiors and generic trims. Shipping cars all the way here is expensive so European companies charge higher prices, but they also usually restrict our models to be higher trim levels/have better options as standard to even it out. I can’t speak for other brands but Australian Mercedes models often come with a lot of features standard that are only found in mid- or high-trim cars in the US.

The M156 engine is garbage and I can't see why people rave about it. My 2008 E63 was the worse car mistake I ever purchased. I average close to 12k per year for 2 years before I woke up to myself. My C43 coupe would eat any M156 engine cars and after 100klm, no issues.

So basically mechanical problems, its a fragile piece of shit like everything else with over the top 'engineering' (see European) - stick to SS Commodore/XR6 Turbo Falcon
