He might, but I don't think so. He's having the guitar he wants and he'll be perfectly happy with it. When he's older he may think of the value of the D28, but his grandpa made it very clear that he has four grandchildren. The kid will understand. In fact, he will always share this moment with his granddad. A granddad with a lot of love for all of his guitar playing grandchildren. Is there a better way to remind him of his generosity than this? I don't think so.

I was fully in the "he can't sell it" camp right up until I heard Joshua describe his pastor's D35. 14 or not, he's a real player and he knows what he wants to play. He clearly needed to own that 35. The memory of standing side by side with grandpa when he sold his D28 to help Joshua buy the 35 will live with him forever. Awesome story.

That was a sweet story the Grandpa told and the little boy was so cute. He could really play that thing. The Grandpa is close to my age. My first job paid $1.40 per hour until someone reported my boss to the state after working there a year and then he had to pay me back pay and a nice sized fine when he should have been paying me $1.50 per hour! Anyway, I bought an acoustic guitar over 40 years ago and it sat in the box. About 4 years ago, I was in a book store looking at a book about learning how to play guitar and a friend told me if I promised to learn how to play guitar, he would buy me the book. He did and I did. I learned how to play guitar just over 3 years ago. I sold that one, upgraded to a better one and then sold that one and upgraded to an even better one. Now I own 4 guitars (Two Acoustic Electrics and two electric guitars) and had to stop myself from buying more. My prized guitar is a nice Zager built by Mr. Zager himself (In the Year 2525) that's a bit over 3 years old now and sounds better each day. John

My mom gave me her 66 D28 after dad passed away. Dad bought it for her in 1968, after it had been sitting in the music store for two years. He took it to Nazareth for repairs in 1983, and drove it to mom in Quebec. (Dad and I were in MD) I would NEVER sell it. I grew up listening to mom play it, and it has always been my dream guitar. It still blows me away every time I play it, and I will never truly be worthy of it, but it will hopefully go to my son, many years from now.

Inherited my uncle's '47 0-18. Regardless it's been re-worked, won't sell it. When the time comes I'll probably pass it down, find it a home with an appreciative player, or donate it as a tax deduction to raise money for a youth orchestra. Appreciate the buyer's honesty trying to dissuade the seller. I'd also save up for a used or blemished D-35. Those Brazilian D-28's are hard to come by and they're great bluegrass machines. Think the D-28's a better sounding instrument. The D-35's perhaps prettier, but has different sonic qualities with its three piece back. Thanks for posting!

Jeremy, what a very special story and thank you for sharing it with us. And Josh, you are a great young player and you make all of us older guitar players proud to see your talent on display here. In the 70's I would buy what have now become expensive vintage electric and acoustic guitars from the 1950's and 60's which were frequently advertised in our local newspaper. Every once in awhile I would keep one of those guitars for 5-10 years but more often I would end up selling or trading them to friends who also played guitar. It was a constant carousel of guitars so seeing Grandpa here having bought a new Martin D28 for $400 in 1967 and having held on to it for all those years is just a wonderful story and reminds me of what I wish I'd done with some of the gems that passed through my hands. Maybe Josh will keep that D-35 for 53 years! PS. Jeremy, call up Josh one day and take him to the Martin Guitar Factory in Nazareth PA, It will be the trip of a lifetime for you both.

It was at the price where it was worth getting. Why spend $2500 on a used when you can get new for $3 g's? Lovely instrument and a nice story of how you came by it. I have a related horror story. I was approached at a gig by someone who asked if I would be interested in an early 1960s D18. I asked the usual questions - how long had he had it (in the family since new, owned by now departed relative), any damage (no - neglected to ask if it had had any work done on it, though, which turned out to be important), how much (reasonable asking price given), etc. I have a 1972 D35, but had always fancied an older 18. I love that crisp mahogany body sound. So I arranged to visit the seller (about 100 miles away) the following week. I arrived, was ushered into the house and handed the guitar and my heart sank. It had been re-finished with a THICK coat of polyurethane lacquer. It had obviously been sprayed - there was a circle of over-spray on the inside of the back (sound hole had obviously not even been masked) and the layer of goop was so thick it came virtually to the top of the bridge. I played a G chord on it and the sound fell at my feet. I asked why. "It was rather scratched and we thought it would look nicer if we had it re-varnished". I asked who did the work and was proudly given the name of a well-known builder and repairer of solid electric guitars and basses who lived not far away. Oh dear. I asked whether they noticed the difference in sound when they got it back and was told, "Well, it seemed a bit quieter". A bit?? The poor thing was imprisoned in a plastic straight jacket. I had to explain that the repairer had ruined the instrument and that the crud would need to be completely stripped off, that there was no guarantee how it would sound afterwards and offered what I thought was fair with that taken into account. They were not happy, so I walked. What really peeved me was that the repairer (whose name I shan't mention, but many would recognise it) must have been aware he was doing the wrong thing, even though he is known for solid electric instruments.

What a beautiful sharing of getting this great legend. Grandpa bought it new. Grandson plays like a champ and now parting with it. Knowing what it is to share something special with a grandson, I can understand the significance here. Not to mention that Joshua is selling to move up to another level. This kid can play no doubt. Thank you for sharing this.

I've had two dreams for a very long time now. The first one is to own a great guitar from 1967, because that's my year of birth. And the second one is to be able to buy a Martin D28. Just wow!!!
