After reading what everyone is saying. After looking through all the advice, here's a few things I have to say. I will not bring that thing back on the road ever unless, I'm bringing it to get fixed and welded. I might just make it a stationary tank since my oil company said they would fill it without a vent. And the heating oil truck, I guess has different compartments so they could bring diesel at the same time. Maybe I'll put it on another trailer if I find one cheap. I put some work into this trailer like tires and wood so maybe I'll just use it around the yard for something. Maybe a portable chicken co-op can be built on top. I don't know yet. But this'll be parked in the woods until I figure that out. I've always wanted to get into welding, and since I have that generator trailer, maybe I can find a large used welder that would link up with that well. I know they make weatherproof welders, and I guess I'll look around and try to find one of those used. Thank you, everyone, for the advice. I think the tank alone is worth what I paid, so i'm not mad. Any particles that are left in the tank should be filtered out by whatever device I put it in and routine fuel filters should do it. I'm not worried about the tank being 4 decades old because it's so thick and has no pitting. Yes, these tanks will typically rust from the inside out but it's not like the new ones that are scary thin. It's still got many decades of use left. Maybe I'll just use it for heating oil. And when the tank at my house gets low, I can pump it in. Then I don't need to have the delivery as often. Something good will come of it. I just don't know what yet

That’s a front axle from something like a model A Ford or similar, its got a steering kingpin assembly , the bar is the location rod from that car that attached to the car frame, that kingpin must be secured because it will turn if it breaks free. I’d take it to a mechanic and have them check and reweld if necessary. Nice trailer, cheers from Tennessee!

A tip for drilling metal is to keep the drill speed lower, use smaller bits first and step up to the size you need so you're not trying to remove too much material at once, and use lubrication to keep the temperature of the bit down. Heat is what kills drill bits, if you keep them cool they can last a long time.

If you have an air compressor I would unscrew the pump from the tank and blow compressed air through it for a goodly while. One of the construction projects I was involved with was on the site of an old garage/petrol station and we had to remove the underground petrol storage tank. But before it could be touched it had to be degassed which was done by pumping steam through it for a fair time. So be very careful on what you do with it.

I agree the axle assemby is from the front of a quite old vehicle. The worn out rods that were welded on, that should have been done both ways and with better metal. And the pivot point behind the wheels could be welded to not ever move. A low price welder would be a worthwhile purchase for you. If you used it to fix, the trailer, it would probably cost you less for the welder than hiring someone to do the job. And you surely will use it again. Maybe not often but its there when you need it. Thats how it worked out for me.

The axle definitely looks to be from the front of a car because those swivels on the hubs are king pins and the rods coming away from the bottom of the king pins are the track rods so there’s definitely some welding required here to ensure the stability and true running of the tyres otherwise excessive tyre wear could result if the toe in or toe out were not corrected.

Got new lights on it, got some of that DOT red/white reflector tape and put it on the sides and the back, now I’m shopping for accessories like spare tire mounts/mower wheel catch/assisted ramp system (the gate is heavy!) what would you recommend as a good seal for the wooden floors that won’t be slippery when wet? If that trailer is shaking at low speeds but smithing out when going faster, I’d suggest jacking up trailer and spin the wheel(s) to see if it’s on crooked

On the of frame fix two L2x2x4" long , 2 holes to bolt to the frame, 1 hole for bolting clevis to the angle iron. No welding as it will get porous from dirt. Everything is heat-treated and plated, you can always paint it. Split washer + flat washer on the nut side of every bolt to secure. You can do it, trust me I'm a Draftsman 🙏🧐

You can safely remove the rust from the tank with a wire brush, sanding disc and paint it with red lead. You don't have to empty the tank. And what the chassis of the trailer is that of parts of a car. And the chassis is made to keep the wheel straight. The back and forth of the trailer is to place the tank forward. And there is a paint on the market that makes the tank water and leak proof. If the tank is so hot, paint it white.

To be honest I think I would go to a graveyard where they might have trailers and get a good trailer or at least a trailer axle with the right dimensions. The odd shaking might be movement of the steering knuckles on that steering axle or bad alignment. I wouldn't trust such a DIY solution at least. 500 for that heap of junk trailer was at least far too much, if it was for just the trailer. At this point I would rather consider the trailer a freebee and the tank for 500, but even then it would still be too much I think.

That's what happens with most tanks. But just like any tanks, the old ones are thicker, so it won't happen as fast. Even if this thing is forty years old, it was built well back then.
