I started with the On camera pop up flash as a commander to the nikon SB-700. This works well enough to get you started.. Until you put your flash in a softbox and you break the optical trigger ability.. This leads you to triggers.. In my case I went with the Godox X-pro and a receiver with the flash. That solved the optical limitations. due to flash position, distance.. etc. Then next light was a godox AD 400 pro for main and the SB for hairlight / background. Next was the Godox V1.. that provided a 3 light setup that was perfect for all my needs at that time. a joy to be able to control all the lights independently from the remote. Thanks Jim! I also decided to go with Godox, and I have been a happy camper ever since. I find it a good compromise between price and quality (and I am not sponsored).
