~ My own notes: 7:56 summary of everything 0:57 ISO - the sensitivity of camera sensor; the higher the iso, the more sensitive the cam sensor is gonna be; higher iso = more light but also more noise and grainy as well; set your iso based on the SCENE 2:40 Aperture - the size of lens opening/hole; the smaller the aperture, the bigger the lens hole, the more light comes in and vice versa; example: lens f/3.5 & f/38... 3.5 has bigger hole while 38 has smaller hole; the picture gets more detailed as the lens opening gets smaller; set your aperture based on the SUBJECT; if you want more depth of field (or more detailed pic), go for higher aperture (or small lens opening) 5:55 Shutter speed - the amount of time (in seconds) that the shutter is open; example: 1/50, 1/250, or 1/8000 of a second for faster shutter speed. There is also 1", 2" , 10" for slower shutter speed meaning your shutter is open for 10" (10 seconds); shutter speed controls motion blur, use faster shutter speed for sports to capture crisp motion and make a fast-moving object freeze in time and avoid blur; slow shutter speed = more motion blur Fix scenario #1: image is too dark: - slow the shutter speed - lower the aperture - raise the iso Fix scenario #2: too bright: - lower the iso - raise the shutter speed - raise the aperture

"Explain it to me like I'm a 5 year old" is, by far, the best way to start when venturing into this world as a beginner. The explanations were given under the premise the viewer knew nothing about each setting, right down to when and why a photographer would need to change any of them. The examples were a great visual aid as well. This was exactly what I needed to feel ready for the next step in learning. Thank you!!

If someone can't explain easy enough mostly they themselves are not clear about it. The other thing is good photography is involved but not a deep science subject which requires deep amount of knowledge. Usually you start with basics and if it sticks you will learn on ur own by experience but some folks who charge huge amount of money needs to make it complicated to look their expensive course worthy.

The advice to set ISO first and shutter speed last is great for photography. However, everyone should keep in mind that if shooting video, the order is basically reversed. You typically want the shutter speed set as close as possible to 2x your framerate, you still want to set aperture second to get the depth of field you want, and then you adjust ISO last to get brightness to match. If your camera doesn't have enough usable ISO range to achieve the right target brightness, if the image is too bright, you can darken it with filters. If it's too dark/noisy on the other hand, then you may have to compromise on depth of field, and possibly slow down the shutter speed slightly.

@@jadeSLenin I mean aperture priority, which is what most of photographers use most of the time. I don't know how it's marked on Nikon cameras, it's mostly Av or just A. www.oehling.cz/data/imgs/29/0031329l.jpg You just set aperture manualy, so you have control over depth of field and you let other things (shutter speed and ISO) on auto which is ok in most of situations.

I actually adjust the ISO last all the time. I see ISO as a last measure that will only be bumped up from 100 if I really need it. Usually I just set my aperture first, then my shutter speed as low as possible while maintaining the ISO at 100, and only if I can't make the shutter speed slower than what I usually feel comfortable (around 1/160), only then I'll bump up the ISO. The acronym ISO stands for “International Organization for Standardization”. However, camera ISO does not directly refer to the organization that creates various technology and product standards. Ever since two film standards called ASA and DIN were combined into ISO standards in 1974 (later revised for both film and digital photography), they were referred to as one word “ISO” from that point on. Although ISO initially defined only film sensitivity, it was later adopted by digital camera manufacturers with the purpose of maintaining similar brightness levels as film. You can say it either way as well.

The International Standards Organizarion change occured in 1983 and was fully adopted in 1984. BTW, I not only remember the change, I still have a roll of film that showed both. That roll of film states 1983/1984 to show the period of time of the change. Now I just need to find it so I can photograph it...

@certs74310 ай бұрын
Pretty much. I mean in application it always was a measurement for light sensitivity either for film or plates or a sensor but the "word" to indicate it has always been the acronym for whatever standard was being used and the organization that devised it. There were a few out there Including GOST if you ever used soviet Cameras. This idea that ISO is a word in isolation seems to be no more than the 2010s and seems to come from the internet and probably people who have never used a film camera older than the 80s.

Thank you so much for this video! Trying to figure out F stops and shutter speeds and why my photos are too dark or too bright while changing all three of these things without trying one at a time has nearly driven me crazy but hearing it simplified like this, was way better for me to go try to figure it out! Kudos to you.

Hi, I'm Amanda. I just bought my first camera after years of taking pictures with my phone that people thought were taken with a camera. I saved and bought a Sony A7R III. I wanted to thank you for this video because to be honest I'm pretty overwhelmed. There's a lot I need to learn. I have taken a few good shots without doing anything with the settings(because I have no clue). I've been told I have a good eye for composition? Anyway, I'm a counsellor but have a dream to become a professional photographer and make amateur documentaries. Your video was so good for me because it gave me some of the basics in 10. I'm the same as you. With anything new I need it explained to me like I'm a 5 yr old. Thank you so much. Truly. -Amanda

Have to say pal - really enjoying your videos. I’ve never commented on KZbin before but started watching you after I ordered my first GoPro (7 Black) - found your videos super informative and love your footage. I’ve been trying to get into photography for years but never quite got beyond the basics but you have inspired me to give it another push and can’t wait to start playing with my GoPro. Keep up the great work, you’re one of the best I’ve seen on here.
@DavidManningvlog5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Jason, super kind of you! I think you nailed it that you just need to make that push and be consistent about using the GoPro. Obviously, the more you practice, the better you get! With the older DSLR cameras, we used to joke that you weren't a photographer until you've broken a shutter. Mainly, because shutters were rated to about 100,000 releases. So you would need to take 100,000 photos to break one! Hahhaa! Not sure what it is with the GoPro, but I promise you the more you play with it, the better and better you'll get! If you put together any videos, send a link my way, I would love to check them out!

I've had over 60 years of experience in photography both professional and now as a retired enthusiast and I'm still learning "the basics". There may be certain methods of achieving certain results, which work some of the time, but the most important basic (s) are time, vision and imagination. Sadly, these days it's more about the machinery for making images,together with how it makes you look (in the eyes of friends and colleagues etc) and feel. Defining and explaining photography is nowadays a sort of 'you tube' obsession, it's full of so called experts, claiming to have discovered the perfect formula for perfect images and only by following their reinterpretation of the instruction booklet can you hope to create a decent photo. Time, practice, the exchange of ideas and personal experience are the true basics and can't be taught in a ten minute video.

Love it Philip! I think this video is that first 80% that I'm talking about and the time, practice, exchange of ideas, and personal experience is the other 20% that takes you to a level of expertise!

You must remember things called books. When someone bought a camera they could buy a book on basic photography, even specific to their camera. Cameras also came with manuals. Exposure, and more, was explained - better than it can be done on KZbin IMHO. You can still buy such books, by Michael Freeman for example. Unfortunately many today think reading is beneath their dignity.
@PMS19504 жыл бұрын
@@dukenukem5768 I recall Michael Freeman's books. Clear and well written. 'You tube' does have a few genuine, experienced photographers that give informed guidance and advice. A visit to Fox Talbot's home, Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire, is a fascinating place and puts the whole history and aesthetics of photography into perspective. A case of going back in order to move forward, perhaps!?
