You are by far the best batrery builder ive seen on youtube or anywhere for that matter. Im in a race with time i feel having this cancer and getting a battery built that can support my off grid power system is a top priority. Im wanting my wife to have power without a power bill after im gone and even while im sick it would be nice. This solar stuff has given me a hobby that will hopefully benifit my family once im gone. Im currently using 24 nissan leaf modules but hopefully one day soon i can get some cells like you use in your battery builds. Id like a 20 or 30 kw pack so our off grid tiny home camper can make it thru a few days of bad weather. Thanks for the videos we all love seeing your stuff you do and the info you share

I'm enjoying watching your variety of videos. thank you for your postings. I am expecting delivery of a ZKETECH EBC-A40L and am expecting the typical horrible Chinglish manual. Would you consider a brief video of detailed step by step use of your tester? My cells should reach me soon and I must say, I'm a little nervous about the charge and test part of the battery build.

The QR code is a good way to determine if the seller has been honest with you as you can determine manufacturer, and date of manufacture from it. I bought 16 cells from China guaranteed to be “brand new EVE cells” and according to the QR’s not a single one was even close to new and three cells were not EVE. I should have requested the QR’s of my purchase before releasing shipment and at least stood a chance of knowing ahead of time. That is if they sent me the actual QR’s of the batteries they were shipping. If they were different I would have had concrete reason to reject them under Alibaba protections. Ray could you PM me, I’m in the Houston area and building a sizable system for my cruising catamaran and would like to converse if you are willing. Thanks for your helpful work!

You should have made the deal with jenny wu as most of us did after watching rays first video from new year 2022 I guess where he started to share his experiences. And do not trust the qr codes send to you as photos cause that is no guarantee that you would get these cells. The sellers do know what you are looking for and why you are asking therefore would be able to fool you . Avoid the hazzle and risks and buy from jenny wu as Ray has said multiple times. Works quite nicely and if you still do not trust you still have the paypal protection if you buy from docan power. Our cells arrived within 4,5 weeks from china in europe delivered to our door with all the taxes and duties paid at purchase so no delays nor hazzles. Average cell had delivered about 1% than nominal and promised. I had purchased EvE cells grade B which I had asked for and I got those with genuine QR code you can no longer read, but the manufacturer is also laser engraving the serial number you would get from the qr code so you are able to check the qr code by entereing the serial. Worked great, all cells are about a year old and still running above 101% of nominal capacity. They are used with a seplos bms and connected with a growatt SPH family hybrid inverter.

So, if space is a concern, go with the larger 300+ AH batteries. If the absolute lowest cost is what you want, the 280's are still a slightly better value? Regardless of where you got those cells, they are certainly testing as A-Grade.
@ciciedee5474

QR codes are the same thing as certificate of authenticity. It means nothing. If the cells test okay, then they are ok. If I am spending 30k, I will be taking care of my investment. I have the ability to follow directions. I will compress the cells. I will read the part that says once the cells have expanded, they are expanded. I will read the part that says the expansion takes place once the cells are charged above 3.25 volts. I watched a KZbin'r take apart a Nissan battery pack and couldn't get the bolts back in because they were too short. The battery expanded when he took it apart. Another great video Ray
@typxxilps
@typxxilps Жыл бұрын
Nissan leaf is a different thing and has nothing in common with what ray is sharing: LFP chemistry They have been already charged fully once the arrived at your door cause the dealers claim to charge and discharge them especially those that had been sold as grade B cells. So compression is great to avoid risks caused by too high loads but it has not to be soo tight if you read what EVE has written in their big manual / spec sheet how to use these cells.

My design skills are rusty as college was 45 years ago and my electronics employment was limited to trouble shooting of mainframe gear for IBM, which required good analytical skills, but not down at ohm's law level. That tester has become the defacto standard for LiFePo4 testing. I first saw it on Andy's channel, so I bought it also. The price will be increasing due to demand. As usual, nice work!
@typxxilps
@typxxilps Жыл бұрын
no, the demand is no longer increasing at least here cause it had become harder to sell them used. And: lot less sales of diy batteries since ready to use rack batteries arrived here with BYD LFP cells and domestic seller and warranty. 10 kWh for 2500€ is a bargain considering that a metal case and seplos bms or similiar are not cheap. 2500€ for a door to door delivery with a domestic warranty and BYD cells is a great deal cause the cells alone for a 8,4 kWh LFP were about 1300€. Add 25% and then you are close to 1600€ plus box plus bms which can be about 900€. Also the sales of diy cells had been stalling for quite a longer period cause Will Prowse had complained about a year ago or so. And he can track those figures due to affiliate links sales and results, that people might watched his videos but sales had gone down. And he also asked US retailers he has been working with. The testers are usually needed only once and far too expensive to let them in the shop if you can only charge and test cells but not the big battery unless you build 1 battery a year or so. I bought them new, used them and sold them again and therefore I know that it had become tougher to sell those tester again. Once I finished a battery I tend to think that I would not build one again, but then a year later or too I have a need for a bigger battery due to new demand caused by replacing the central gas heating with heat pump systems. Before I had build one without having in mind that a bigger one could be better for the EV too and so I have build additional batteries to meet my needs over time. Now there are 3 of these.

He had gotten what he had paid for and do never forget what will happen with a batch of 16 cells. That cell with the lowest capacity will determine the capacity of the whole package cause this will be the cell that runs first into the low voltage alarm and stops the battery just to protect that single cell. Everything above the lowest is lost - except you buy 64 cells and put the best of the best into the first battery and so on cause then you can benefit from putting the best of the best together and all cells of these 4 batteries would be much closer together than a battery build just out of 16 cells and no choice.

I noticed other solar KZbin channels have been pushing expensive server rack batteries with affiliate links saying DIY battery cells are grade B at best should avoid them. When you price out the difference it's almost 1/2 the cost when you put in 300 AH batteries. 100AH it's closer to buying server rack if you look at the BMS cost difference might as well go with the higher current.
@RayBuildsCoolStuff
@RayBuildsCoolStuff Жыл бұрын
It’s kind of funny that they would say that they’re a grade A when they’re definitely not EV vehicle grade cells and the manufacturers don’t have a grade A. They have EV certified and not. So what you get with the server rack battery is who knows in the way of battery cells, and very difficult or impossible to test what you have except for the capacity of the entire battery. In the end, it comes down to dollars per kilowatt hour. I will say that if you were trying to market a product, it is easier to promote a ready-made battery instead of helping people put their own together.
@Mike-01234
@Mike-01234 Жыл бұрын
@@RayBuildsCoolStuffThat makes sense I understand people who have the money to spend why not just buy an EG-4 rack that is done and has a 10-year warranty. I don't have that kind of money. My goal is to investigate if it's feasible to build a DIY system to take my 5000W AC unit to battery during peak usage and cost between the hours of 4pm-7pm. If I can remove biggest load and charge the batteries during off peak the ROI might workout with DIY cell batteries.

Hello Ray; I'm newly subscribed now that I was able to get my KZbin id recovered, hoping to add a few micropennies to your channel. I told Jenny Wu that I found Docan Power because of you. I can order my EVE LF280K cells with 2 threaded posts or 4 threaded holes. I was thinking that the 4 bolts on each busbar would give better conduction? I own thread chasers and know how to use a torque wrench so I'm not afraid of stripping threads. I saw a fairly recent post of multiple welded posts popping off the battery ( the whole aluminium plate and post comes free) so that scares me. I have read "opinions" but no offical stated torque values for bolt tightening. I sent an email directly to EVE, but no response so far. I will ask Jenny. I would love to hear your thoughts on these topics. Thanks, Robin

I torque temporary connections to 4nm and permanent connections to 5 or 6 nm. I think a good limit is 8nm and I wouldn't go there personally. I use the serrated nuts. I have yet to find a connection that has loosened up later but I'm not convinced it can't happen.
@typxxilps
@typxxilps Жыл бұрын
you usually can find the torque limit in the pdf spec sheet from eve for such cell poles. Ask Jenny Wu if she had not send these to you. These are documents over 16 - 25 pages long with a lot of details and things you do not know . They also tell you about the version you are getting cause they = EVE are constantly improving those cells that are still sold as LF280K but with a counter which you can see only in that document which typ of LF280K you should get. Usually these torque figures are quite low so do not use too much cause you would damage the connection of the battery pole / terminal inside the battery and then you are screwed cause it will get loose then and no way to fix it.

30 kWh cells are sold for 6000€ if you get EVE LF280K here - or 3 batteries in a metall rack case each 2500€ so 7500€ in total. Not so much to safe if you consider that a SEPLOS BMS is a bout 250€ each, so just 1000€ as budget for those 2 cases, wiring, terminals or anderson connectors. I guess we had about 400€ for each battery on top of the cells for case and BMS but do not forget that the ZKE Tech Tester is about 250€ alone, an internal resistand meter 50€ , you will need a hydraulic crimping tool for the lugs and what not which will add all up a lot if you are not selling them afterwards instantly. So 500€ for 2 seplos BMS, 300€ for 2 cases, rods , cables, lugs, and then 350€ for tools, so 1150€ on top of the 6000€ for cells. Pretty close to 3 new domestic batteries in metal with a domestic 5 year warranty that you can get for just 7500€ - 4% cashback right now. And then it is a 7150€ to 7200€ race and a lot of work and hours to get it done. Also these rack batteries or Powerwalls of 10 kWh have BYD cells. If you love to diy then the choice is obvious if you can afford or rent the tools needed other wise I would buy one from Berlin.

What kind of delta were you seeing when the cells were at 3.65?
@typxxilps
@typxxilps Жыл бұрын
there is no delta in the voltage cause the zke tech tester will slowly increase the voltage while lowering the Amps till it hits 3,65V and then cut off. What else do you expect after having charged to 3,65 V? If you let them rest for a month then you will see weaker cells with lower voltage but not right after charging.

@@typxxilps So you're saying you're observing zero mV between all cells at 3.65?

I ordered 36 cells from Yenny Wu last year. The handling, support and communication were very good. But unfortunately the cells weren't all okay. Roughly speaking, one third of the 36 cells reached just over 270 Ah, another third approx. 275 Ah and one third 280 Ah. The German community is also not only reporting good things about Jenny Wu/Docan in terms of capacity. You have to assume that - as is so often the case - you won't get an A grade after all. Incidentally, I don't think this is absolutely necessary for the usual home storage application. If you do a clean top balancing and let the cells work in the safe operation range, everything is actually fine. It seems to me that it is more important than the few Ah more or less that you are always well informed about the status of the delivery. And that you get a quick answer to questions.

There is a thread on DIY solarforum under the vendor review, you can see how Ray is not telling the truth about the QR code a user post a screenshot showing you how the qr code has been altered from original.

@@Foxfried this makes no sense to me. I showed the QR codes and they don’t look like the altered codes I have seen. I gave a bad review to SFK when I got a set of cells that didn’t measure close to the numbers in their hand written test report that came with the cells. Now there is a thread where a fan of SFK is insulting me. OK I get that but I don’t understand how you think I’ve misrepresented anything. Disagreeing with my assessment is fine but calling me a liar is not.

I am from germany and gotten quite good cells each over delivering. What the germans did not really get right is the testing procedures and conditions EVE is mentioning in the papers like 25° C ambient temperature. Most of them did not have read those papers or looked for such high temperatures but I did and I also observed that the cells capacity increased cause I checked the lower half of my 16 cells over 100 times before I built the battery. At the end the capacity increased and now 75% of those 16 cells are above 1,5% of nominal capacity measured in Ah even though i do not care about Ah, but Wh cause that is what does matter. And the rate in Wh is even higher than +1,5% Ah cause energy results out of current x voltage over time.

You started off well Ray, but I haven't heard a video from you in a long time that hasn't been a blatant advertisement. Go back to telling us about your system and building batteries etc. And try to do it without mentioning any battery sellers.
@typxxilps

Not really advertisement. I had gotten mine from Jenny Wu and she delivered cells that delivered more than they were rated. Quite good considering 1,5% more is not nothing. And it took ages till Ray mentioned the seller and how to get such cells for the first time while viewers were constantly asking for the seller and how to get these. Read the comments under the first videos about battery cells from new years day 2022 onward and then you know who had asked for that. We - maybe not you. But do not blame him for what the viewers had been asking for and he reluctantly revealed.
