@@faaroncarthy680 Thanks. I will still get the new one if I have a chance at retail. I don't like all of the new designs, but it will be interesting to have a set of the game that uses the US rules, and it will look good sitting next to the original on my shelf.

on ebay you can find pit trap tiles, secret doors, etc. that are all black on one side... the NA components look lower res (or fewer colors) and on thinner cardstock with plain white on the back. interestingly the remake edition in the pledge drive were the same thickness but are white on the back while the retail version is black on the back. in the editions I bought I noticed that the cut out artifact cards (the back cover of the quest book) the distributions were off (because it's easy to confuse which artifacts came with Kellar's Keep and which came with Return of the Witch Lord). of Course I am talking about the US edition. the EU and australian editions are different that's more what you're talking about in your video.

I loved the lore in the Kellars Keep Quest Book. I still remember the bit about the Emperor's champion holding the bridge against Morcars army giving us time to escape. Morcar being impressed at first. Then kills him with a wave of his hand or something.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 жыл бұрын
That's right. Kenaron, the captain of the guard. Single-handedly holds off the Doomguard until Morcar loses his patience. It's a great little story beat - and it's quite interesting to see a character that isn't one of the main heroes of the game doing something awesome. HeroQuest really did a neat job of weaving a story that felt bigger than you're part in it.
@phildevey63023 жыл бұрын
What an expansion this is: the extra orcs & goblins, the new map overlays, the four part map, and the way the missions form an ongoing story that gradually unfolds. Fabulous stuff! One of the best expansions from GW for any of their boxed games. Just to emphasize your point about the boxes being flimsy, mine is somewhat squashed and has a rip in the front (right in the middle of the picture, unfortunately) where something has punctured it during storage.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. This is a really good one. It's a shame about the box, but at least you still have one! The American boxes were so much better.

It's funny how people have come to pronounce 'Ye Olde' as 'yee old' or even 'yee oldee', the letter which looks like 'Y' was actually never a 'Y' at all, it was originally the letter we call 'thorn' which was part of Northern European scripts for a long time and stood for the digraph we now write as 'th'. So 'ye' is actually 'the' and was always pronounced 'the'. The reason thorn got replaced by Y is because it started to look more like Y and then type sets imported from Europe didn't include a thorn letter so people just used the Y, which shouldn't apply to pub signage of course, but it's just one of those funny things where people forget.

100% true. heroquest itself is full of factoids from the middle ages, but it's a tribute to pop culture fantasy lore. but yes, it would be "the old inn" pronounced like that, or however a medieval person would say it. then again the world of heroquest might not actually be earth, but some kind of parallel world in another dimension. I still say "ye old inn" when I say it out loud though, easier to remember how to spell it when you type it in! but I don't say "oldy" you've got me there.
@stuffandnonsense85282 жыл бұрын
@@HeroQuestFans oh, I knowingly say 'yeeee oldeeee' because it's funny. But I don't say Inn, it's much funnier to say pube, but to pronounce it in the modern way.

I only made it through the first 3 maps roughly but I LOVE this expansion. I was super impressed at how creative the map designer was with breaking up the stock set-feel of the one map board. They make it almost completely unrecognizable at times. I also really loved the sort of DOOM feel, where secret walls would suddenly open up and dump a TON of greenskins right on the heroes backs. Great fun. This is exactly where my group will be picking up in the upcoming months now that we are all getting vaccinated, I can't wait!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there are some really fun missions in this one. I sort of flip flop between preferring this one or Witch Lord. Problem is, I love greenskins and undead, so I'm very torn! I think the missions are probably a bit better in Kellar's Keep.
@DavidGreen_au3 жыл бұрын
I remember getting Kellar and Witch Lord together (back in the days of antiquity), both being really great additions, especially Witch Lord as it came with new figures. But when it came to figures, the Ogre Horde expansion also took a big leap with its Ogre figures.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 жыл бұрын
Return of the Witch Lord just had two more sprues of the white enemies (zombies, mummies, and skeletons), Wizards of Morcar and Against the Ogre Horde both had new models though, and yeah, the ogres were sweet. Maybe one day I will have enough spare cash to add them to the collection!
@DavidGreen_au3 жыл бұрын
I never managed to get the Elf expansion, and within the last ½ hour checked on eBay for availability. Some individual figures for around €40 each, and a complete, unopened pack for US$1200. If new HeroQuest expands further, maybe these packs will get a re-issue, in which case, I'll get it then. The Ogres have moveable arms. That was a surprising shift in the figure designs.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 жыл бұрын
It's because the ogres were in several parts, so you could position the arms in different ways. The elf and barbarian packs were never released in the UK so I don't have any real connection with those that makes me want them (thankfully, considering that price!). It would be nice to see Hasbro pick up and the ball and run with it though. I hope they do release the new edition at retail, as I would like to have a set with the US rules as they're so different.
@DavidGreen_au3 жыл бұрын
The enemy with multiple body points was one of the significant changes in the US version, which is something that I added early on to certain denizens when playing. It was also an opportunity to have fun with the players when they encountered, maybe a Goblin with more magic and body points than them; Preconceptions can be dangerous :)
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 жыл бұрын
Those sneaky gobbos. When I first started playing HeroQuest my older brother was Morcar. By the time we got to named characters (like the boss orc and the like), he was bumping up their life points. Of course, back then I had no idea that the American version had enemies with varying life points - it just seemed like a natural thing to do to make some oof the encounters more dramatic.

It's a little hard to tell, but it looks like the EU version of the expansion has tiles similar in quality to the base Game System. There'd be no way you'd mistake the expansion tiles for anything else on this side of the pond. I picked up a copy just before I moved and just got all that stuff out of storage. I've genuinely had thicker cereal boxes than the bits in Kellar's Keep. Apparently Return of the Witch Lord has the same fine "quality" components. The US-exclusive quest packs got better treatment and are made like what came in the main box.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, apart from a little colour variation it's not that easy to tell where the tokens came from. However, in Europe at least, the card stock was never great anyway. I don't know if the American core set actually had better quality card to begin with than what we ever had over here.

What about the artifact cards. I don’t know which ones go to which expansion
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 жыл бұрын
The artifact cards weren't in the European editions (the version in the video is the UK edition). The artifacts were printed on the reverse of the expansion books, so if you're lucky they won't be cut out and will still be there. If your copy is cut up, Kellar's Keep should have 8 magic scrolls (Ball of Flame, Fire of Wrath, Tempest, Sleep, Heal Body, Rock Skin, Genie and Courage), plus throwing dagger and fire ring.

Kellar's Keep and Witch Lord are pretty easy to get in the UK for reasonable money. Boxed copies can go to around £100, but it's possible to snag copies for around £50. Wizards of Morcar and Against the Ogre Horde is another matter - those are well over £200, often over £300.
