Exactly like me, i was looking for an older horse, schoolmaster, etc. Only tried 2 horses before i saw mine and i completely feel in love for a 3 years old unbroken horse who turned out to be my dream horse 😂 i didn't got to ride him because he wasn't yet but he was so chilled and relaxed with everything that i just knew he was the one. So yes that's absolutely true, your forever horse could be just around the corner and the one you didn't expect. Great video Ray 💕

my advice: TRUST YOUR GUT story: I was a newbie looking for a horse of my own to take me to the next level. I had a good idea of what I wanted and my trainer gave me a good list of things to keep in mind. My mom was helping me by scowering facebook. She eventually was approached by a woman who said she had a 20 year old gelding, 15.2hhs, and was trained specifically in dressage for years. I thought this was a perfect horse! However, the day I went to see him I noticed red flag #1, he wasnt an easy catch. When the owner approached the horse he immediately trotted away. When she did catch him, he wasnt thrilled when tied up(red flag 2). As I groomed he refused to pick up any of his feet, not really a problem but I wouldnt recommend a horse for a beginner owner who is a difficult groom. Red flag 4 was that when I tacked him up the owner told me she was happy how well he behaved because he hadnt been ridden in nearly 2 years, she never mentioned that before(and this was a pure Arabian and they arent generally known for being chill horses when out of work for awhile). I asked her to lunge him so I could see how he'd behave and Im so glad I did because when she asked him to walk he took off at a canter and wouldn't slow down(red flag 5). She took him to the round pen and all he did was canter and trot without listening to her. Finally, red flag #6 was the owner was scared of her own horse(really her daughter's horse that this woman had never even been on him). Moral of the story: I saved myself from possibly being badly hurt from falling or being thrown by trusting my gut and asking to see the horse worked without my on him

I love that you went into detail! I've watched many of these types of videos but I feel a lot of people stick to the basics and don't really indulge more into what you will need. But you did very well in explaining different types of scenarios and such. Thanks!

For insurance, if anyone here lives in Australia, I 100% recommend doing it with EA (Equestrian Australia) because not only do you get insurance, but with most shows/comps, both the horse and the rider have to be EA insured/registered.

I’m getting a horse after isolation. I’ve loaned horses before and been through the viewing process and all that stuff but it’s never been very serious because I knew with my loan I wouldn’t have them very long as it was for a few months over winter and autumn because my lessons are very rare through those times so I’ve had to stop my loan recently. I’m trying to be very serious and picky because I need to find the right one as in a few years I want to go up to BE and showjumping because that’s what I want to do. This was super helpful. Thank you 😊

The last time I went horse shopping I was looking for a breeding stallion so I was obviously looking high end just as I do with my broodmares. Because he will sire far more foals than any mare will give birth to the quality of a stallion is even more important. Any horse I buy has to be pasture sound as well as breeding sound.

When you book a vetting for a horse is it best to attend the vetting (say if the horse is quite far away from where you live and this might be tricky)?

Are you certain that buying an 11 year old a horse is the best course of action? Obviously if you have really thought about it then that's fine, but remember this is an animal that could be alive and with you (and costing you) for the next 30+ years... Do you have someone willing to do the work? If it's the kid, are you sure they can/will? If not you will have to pay full board and that can be expensive, or you will get stuck doing it yourself. Are you sure that it's not a phase? (I was a young rider, and I'm still into horses, but I know a lot of people who lost interest). It can be difficult to rehome a horse if suddenly your kid decides they don't care for it any more. Also school! Your kid's school work WILL suffer if they're doing any of the horse work, because it is a lot of work. If they want to go to university or whatever down the line, what happens to the horse? You may think these things are far away, but horses can live a long time. If you bought a horse the same age as your kid is now, they could be together until they're both in their 30s. If you do decide it's a good decision, then try and get a slightly bigger pony if you go down that route. Or even a safe horse. (So long as you make sure it's safe). Don't get a tiny thing, because you will be looking to rehome it in a year or so when the kid grows, and that's just not fair. Definitely go for an older one, and do NOT go for one that hasn't done everything already. Buying a young horse that your kid can grow up with is a cute idea, but in practise can be VERY dangerous because your kid will not know how to do that training themselves. So it'll either be costly, or mistakes could be made that could get someone hurt. If you don't think it's a good decision, why not try loaning? It's buying a horse without the responsibility of actually fully owning it. Full loan is basically like owning one. You can ride, do the work yourself, groom, tack up etc. But if vet stuff happens you've got someone else there. If the horse isn't the right fit, you can just go loan another one. If they outgrow it, you can find another one. And you don't have the problem of finding a new home for the animal, and paying for it while you do. Sorry for the long message, but it is a HUGE decision, and one that can be very costly if you go into it without knowing things. Just be cautious.

I purchased a horse from a rescue, I can not stress enough. No matter where you buy the horse from do a PPE. Turned out , seen very easily via xray, the horse I purchased had severe navicular issues in both front feet. And once I found this out the rescue refused to take the horse back... said he would never leave the rescue he would be unadoptable and they couldnt afford another life'r on the property. He was also an extremely hardkeeper. So always ask what the horse eats, dont ask is the horse an easy keeper. If the person is desperate to get rid of the horse they will say whatever they need to say to sell the horse. I ended up with several thousands of dollars of vet Bill's every year for 7 yrs until he was finally put down at only 14 due to his severe hoof issues. Always always do a PPE and be sly and just ask what the horse eats, how much grain, how much and what kind of hay, ect.
