Thanks for the mention Shane, some good info there. My additional golden tip is to remove the stem and check the fork steerer for over tightening the stem clamp, it is really common to see damage in this area. If in doubt bring it in for a scan.

Most appreciated, Shane. Great set of tips. I've so many cases of carbon fiber failure that I am quite wary about riding a CF bike on generally poorly-maintained Indonesian roads - or buying a second-hand frame locally. I'll be sure to follow your checklist.

+1! Would be great to see a "how to" of the build as well, if possible. In particular bottom bracket and head tube, steerer assembly. I'm thinking of building my next bike and the Giant is one of the frames I am looking at as well. Enjoy it, Shane! -- And thank you for the videos!

@biskitalia17 жыл бұрын
just a couple of things . I know the frame looks good , but you should have pointed out the bottom bracket area sometimes the insert comes unglued and cracks around hole The rear hangar, is the thread crossed or worn and lastly the intergrated seat stem in a crash that area takes a real bash so check for cracks there . The frame looks new and I know you are going to get it checked out so these other things to look for when buying a second hand frame. Buona pedalata ciao Jon

uv exposure can make plastic become very brittle and shatter if it has been stored in direct sunlight for long periods. even if an old frame appear ok its probably wise to replace a frame when it become old and had alot of uv exposure to sunlight or stored in a cold unheated garage

Shane your videos are cool. You have an easy going style that is really appealing. I want a carbon frame set, and buying one used is probably my only hope.

HI I bought a similar frame, the early SL version. after I took it home I found out the seat tube is cracked. So be sure the check it by pull it out. also the rear wheel hanger CF parts also worn out by the QR skewer. Bugger

Looks in better condition/less used than my 3 month old frame. I tried to make a stand like yours, but messed up - the sawhorse is marginally too wide, so I'm going to need to nail a piece on to lift the bike up or plane the end down.

Greetings from Southern California Shane. That's a great looking frame! What groupset are you going to build it up with? It would be helpful to see the build up and why you picked those components. BTW, found your channel when you appeared on the Cycling Mavin's VLOG. All the best!
@gplama8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and dropping by with a comment. I'm putting DuraAce 9000 (mechanical 11spd) on this one. I picked up the groupset for under AU$1000 new so it's a budget build (frame and wheels AU$800) that should end up being a pretty nice bike. Still a few days off finishing it. I'll cover it in a video for sure.

Make a video where you build the bike up, going to build my first bike next week and think the inner cabling will be hard to do.
@EatSleepTrainSmart8 жыл бұрын
Tom Erik Sivertsen Having a spare spoke (J Bend) available helps a lot with internal cabling. A borescope also helps with cable routing and inspecting the inside of the frame for damage.

Apparently you can "tap" the carbon to see if it's structurally sound. Broken carbon will make a different sound from good carbon.

Only for the ears of experts. It'd be difficult for me to know the differences would be.

I should have included that, yep. We had it off yesterday when we chopped and slammed it at Dr SLane's. It's looking pretty neat now! Not far off hitting the road on it for a good roll.

those giant colours are my favorite in every single model. Dope s***t! \m/ so you think that's worth buying fram and separate components and build yourself instead of a buying a complete one with same specs? regards.
@gplama8 жыл бұрын
Just wait until I put blue bar tape on it and totally ruin the vibe! haha! :) Buying 2nd hand in parts is cheaper for me as I like to customise most of a build. If I went a full bike I'd only have to strip it and sell/buy other components.

yep on the rear chainstay is nothing absolutely nothing, was only caused by wheel flex hitting a nice big rut in the road OR the previous owner having had one too many currys trying to keep his BMI in check.

how much did you pay for this frame? also how much would i spend if i wanted all components on it
@gplama8 жыл бұрын
Around AU$700.... Components depend on what level you go with. I've gone DuraAce 9000 and using a lot of parts I already had. The whole build came to around $2500 for now....

You're paying lots of attention to cosmetics, but really on a second-hand bike it is functionality/structural integrity that matters most. Even if the paint job was dented here and there, there is nothing that a couple of layers of nail polish couldn't take care of. But being able to spot cracks or signs of serious wear is what's it should be about -- also, headpost, and short the fork has been cut off, and if it was done properly.
@gplama7 жыл бұрын
That's what I was doing... Cosmetics is indicative of the life the bike has had. If I saw wear and tear on it, I'd have taken it to Luescher Teknik for a scan and review.

Why train indoors in Australian weather?
@gplama7 жыл бұрын
Australia is a big place. Today we have 40C in some parts, blizzards in others. There's also factors such as time, roads, other weather, kids, work. Some people choose to train inside. Some not. It's all good.
