Great review and set of bits of advice. This is my first VR headset ever, and I must admit that I was expecting that the resolution would be pretty much the same as we experience on modern TVs and monitors; I appreciate you being upfront and making this statement, a lot of reviewers failed to do the same.

@@nicknasty14 I'm not exactly disappointed, it is still fun and immersive, but I got the feeling that based on all the advertising and reviews I ended up having higher expectations. It amazes me how most of the reviewers simply decided to not talk about the actual resolution, instead, they just praised it. But I hear you man, hopefully you can find a way to enjoy your headset.

Hands down the best PSVR2 review (and god knows I have seen most of them). This set was my very first VR experience and having watched a BUNCH of reviews beforehand, frankly I thought my set was broken. I wish I had got to watch this one first!! All in all the PSVR2 is utterly incredible and I am blown away by it every time I play it, but the little tidbits and explanations in this video will be super useful to people who are about to buy one. Great job 👏

Really helpful video. I got PSVR2 on launch day but learned some new things here. You are spot on about expectations. I don't know why I expected the picture quality to be flawless like a 4k TV. It's a definite improvement over PSVR but my expectations were unrealistic going into PSVR. Despite that, I absolutely love VR2 and have played it almost every day.

Very good and helpful explanations, not only for PSVR2, also for VR headsets in general. One more thing: if your are still curious why 4K in VR isn't that sharp like 4K on a screen, google for "pixel per degree". To give a glimpse: When we talk about the sharpness of an image, we must not talk about resolution, we actually mean pixel density. Also, a VR headset uses a lot of pixel "twice" to create the stereoscopic view (binocular overlap). So in total, you need a lot more pixel in a VR headset to get the same visual quality like on a flat screen. This is why VR needs so much rendering power.

This is my first vr experience and although I was blown away by the immersion, I was expecting the image quality to be the same as modern 4k TVs. The mura effect bothers me sometimes when I'm not fully immersed to the point I though I had a defective unit. I'm glad to know it's normal. Thanks for the honest review. I still recommend PSVR2, just manage your image quality expectations

Part of the problem was Sony using the Social Screen output for marketing footage which is upscaled vs the halved resolution in the HMD (half split for each eye). All the marketing footage looked very crisp from it vs other VR headsets which had direct feed captures. Those of us with PCVR weren't expecting something equal to a 4k tv, yet are still satisfied with price and features.

This is the best “expectations” video I’ve seen on psvr2 so far. I own the headset and from my perspective as someone completely new to VR, if you’re reason for buying was your interest in the experience part of VR gaming then this headset and the experience won’t disappoint you. If you’re used to cranking the resolution and setting up on a high powered PC to get cutting edge performance and results then VR might not be ready for you. Also the best advice I’ve heard on finding the sweet spot (and I’ve searched manyyyy posts and videos because it took me days to figure out the sweet spot process) was to calibrate your headset comfort by putting the headset on, closing your eyes, and just making it generally comfortable. Then turning in the headset, shut your left eye and focus on the middle “o” in the “hold the controller” welcome message that floats on your screen. Make sure they “o” is crystal clear. When you open both eyes you should be ready to go. If not, try moving the lenses forward more (or back). Cheers all!

Thank you for making it clear how the screen will actually look. I was shocked in a bad way when I tried the original PSVR because the image quality looked so bad, while in all the trailers they looked crystal clear. I actually thought I had a defected unit, but it turned out that's how it was. So it is good to now how VR2 actually looks and also I appreciate the actual game footage so I can see the quality of the image myself. They still use much clearer video for the trailers, sadly.

Amazing video Mystic! Great! I started in VR back 2016 with PSVR 1 and few years later jumped to Quest 2 and PCVR (using wired Quest 2). For sure I like my PSVR2 and the eye tracking experience, the controls, first party games and so. I hardly notice screen door effect and mura is ok for me, but the reprojection is a real crime for a pretty game as Call of the Mountain. Hoping they update this game to run in native 90hz. Pavlov, for exemple, is so smooth in PSVR2!

Frensel lens. It's the one thing to know beforehand. It causes significant chromatic aberration on the edges of your vision, and general blur anywhere but the very center of your vision. On top of that, the sweetspot is incredibly small and if you don't have a bump in the back of your head for the headset to hang onto, it'll frequently slip out of that spot no matter how tight it is. These two problems combine to give someone like me, who's been playing VR since late 2017, nausea for the first time in VR. Had to return it, despite being excited for my preorder :/

Thanks for the honesty. Most reviewers were saying "It is so sharp!", "It looks crystal clear!", " It looks better than on my tv!". Cinema mode *does* look better than my 4k/120hz/HDR Sony X90J - while costing half as much. The HDR OLED gives considerably more than this 'ghosting and softness' you're whining about which i don't even see, and Mura is from not putting the headset on properly - "Objectively" doesn't mean what you seem to think it means.

Great video! I came from no previous VR experience and like many others.. with how other outlets talk about how crystal clear everything was.... I was a little unsure if some of the outer edge blurriness or the blurriness at a distance or in motion was down to my eyesight. "Reprojection" is used by virtually all VR games, is generally turned on, and generally out of the control of the developer (afaik -- there is little discussion on this type of implementation nuance). The developer supplies a framebuffer (or two) to the API, and the API 'corrects' the orientation at the last moment before display (eg. 1ms -- the API also composites data, and corrects chromatic aberration, etc) to minimize latency and disparity between head motion and rendered output. I'm curious to see first-hand the PSVR2 ghosting artefacts that others are talking about. Either Sony is using a really strange reprojection scheme (which would conceivably be correctable by a firmware update), or it is a hardware limitation (eg. pixel retention). I'm not certain if PS5s VR API allows bypassing reprojection. Allowing raw framebuffer access (or a naive composite) would almost certainly obviate future backward-compatibility, as the app would be displaying for the physical characteristics of the PSVR2 not a future PSVR3 requiring a implementation-specific software port. But there are significant performance benefits to allowing framebuffer access. For example, you can lower final fragment counts by doing lens distortion correction in the vertex shader rather than supplying a buffer that is a multiple of the screen resolution.

I found having bright light in the room helps the tracking without using the border on TV. I have an oled so I don't want to burn in the border. I had my light dimmed down and CotM would lose tracking constantly. Now I have my light turned all the way up when using vr. I feel the more used to vr I get, the less impact the stereoscopic 3d has. Like it almost becomes 2d to me. Getting your eyes centered vertically on the adjust visibility screen is very important for a clearer image.

Coming from PSVR1, I'm really satisfied with the PSVR2. Based on the early reviews, I must admit that I expected much clearer visuals, even though some indoor areas in Resident Evil look so lifelike it's spooky. I'm also one that was never bothered by the mura effect of the first headset, and here it's even less apparent so I have no problem with that. I'm a bit disappointed when I get controller tracking issues, as it is the one thing that bothered me the most with PSVR1, and expected the inside out tracking to be flawless. I also miss the immersive feeling of using the Aim Controller, but having the ability of manually reloading weapons is a good compromise. Overall I think it's a great upgrade from the first headset and probably the best choice for any PlayStation 5 owner.

This is a really great video, Ryan! Every review I've seen of PSVR 2 has described the display as being this "crystal clear 4K" image and when I got mine it left me feeling slightly disspointed. I thought, "what am I missing here? Is mine faulty? Maybe its my eyes?". Don't get me wrong I'm really enjoying the headset, the ease of setup makes it worth the price of admission alone for me, but all the IGN style reviews I saw kind of set me up for dissappointment. Coming from PSVR 1 and trying a friends PSVR 2, I was blown away with horizon, but as someone who doesn't get motion sickness I am really disappointed by battles being on-rails. I wish that was an option for those who want simpler gameplay. I tried Resident Evil 8 as well and wasn't too into it TBH. I played the game already normally, and the floating hands were just so hilarious. The shooting and everything felt really nice, but I wasn't scared with what I played to. It is also a change that you need to light your room well. I am used to darkening my room for the tracking lights to be visible, which I don't mind. I don't have great lighting either though so I'm not sure if it would work in my setup.

This was brilliant. I loved (still love) my PSVR1. I desperately miss my vast (& expensive) PSVR1 library, albeit mostly because the PSVR2 launch lineup is inescapably barren by comparison, including to other VR systems at-launch. The reviews about Gran Turismo 7 in VR, for example, all seem to ignore it's the same experience we've been having in Gran Turismo Sport for years just without the hardware limitations; *design-wise* it's literally identical, giving a very similar experience, even including the same missing in-race data, for example. I love my PSVR2 in spite of the "sweet spot" feeling more finnicky this time & the missing content, but right now I'm barely touching it. I can't even test a HOTAS joystick yet, which is outright baffling for the *sequel* VR headset launch from Sony. Can't wait to see the future, for sure.

Good review. Day one I noticed the reprojection. It’s bad in horizon and I get hand stutter as well. Re village is great but has the reprojected blurr. I’d definitely like an option to run it at 90 w/o reprojection. I’ve also had tracking issues and have had to turn my controllers off and on to fix it. Also, quality of life things like volume adjustment must be fixed. I have to go through several screens to adjust volume unless using pulse 3d but that’s too slippery and falls off when I look up and puts pressure on my glasses. Overall I like it and I think there’s a ton of potential but sony has to fix these issues or it won’t take off

Hey, thanks a lot for the in depth video on this. I thought I was reasonably well versed in VR but I actually learned quite a bit here. Didn't know about the mura effect or about the frame rate interpolation trickery for example. Good to know that it can be mitigated somewhat with lower brightness. Anyway thanks!

This was very needed. I was let down by all the hype from reviewers saying the psvr2 is basically crystal clear.

First ever VR headset and it's blowing my mind! Insane. Horizon VR is literally mind blowing as a first time vr gamer. I'm 31 and this is my first ever VR game. Only odd thing is the cable is attached to the headset. I'll be pissed if my cable ends up tearing or something. This also seemed like an obvious choice for me since I have a ps5. Although I do worry about how long it will stay supported and relevant. No worries for a few years at least though.

If it is literally mind blowing, that means your mind has really exploded by now. You mean: figurally 😊

Ryan thanks so much for a thoughtful and very professional explanation of the image quality quirks, no other reviewer has detailed this so far! I’m considering a buy primarily for the Cinematic/120hz mode, as it would fit my living situation well. Is the screen door effect (and other described visual oddities) also prevalent in this mode?

Lowering the brightness from full brightness to and then 2 notches down does wonders. It’s still really bright but all of the mura and screen door effect disappears

@@SpeciasThat’s simply just not true. I’ve lowered the brightness to halfway and still you can see plenty of screen door effect. Especially playing RE village and GT7 from what I’ve noticed. Texturing is also not the greatest, washed out colors and low res textures playing horizon. Right up close your hands and bow will look sharp as they are intended, like in the first PSVR. Everything else looks washed out and low res. For me the upgrade in graphics coming off the first PSVR are very minimal. Everything else is a step up, but don’t think you’re gonna be looking at a much better image, because youre not.

@@nicknasty14 oh, I wasn’t really exaggerating. Then again the only games I have played are kayak, swordsman and zombie land. And in those cases it indeed helped. Now the lower res and all seems like that’s a bit of a let down but that is mostly due to the reviewers overhyping.

I play many of my flatscreen PS5 games this way (and did with the PSVR1 beforehand, instead of fighting with the BF for the TV) - the screen door is subtler than VR mode but it *is* visible if you look for it so if you think that would bother you i'd not recommend it unless you can try one out. For me it's my first experience with OLED HDR, making it better than our twice-as-expensive 4k/120hz Bravia X90J.

Over at a friends house I enjoyed playing the PSVR2....at first. I booted up Horizon and it was beautiful, looking at the sun literally made my eyes squint and it was awesome. Until 20 minutes later when I felt like I was gonna puke. Keep in mind I'm a long time VR user and I have NEVER gotten this sick before. Now, SadlyItsBradley had talked about this being a persistence problem with the displays and that lowering the brightness should help. After lowering it to around 20% it still made me feel queasy but I no longer felt like I was going to puke. I'm glad I was able to try it out before down the road committing to something I could never use. So far the thought is that the reprojection is causing this but not 100% sure yet. Definitely upsetting as the PSVR2 is quite an amazing headset for the cost.

My two issue I've had with PSVR2 has been the issue with one of the controllers loosing functionality during a game. From what all I've read online, it's widely known and experienced. The cause is being claimed firmware. Whether it's game or just controller themselves. ATM the two solutions till it's patched that I know of is clearing your cache and/or resetting your controller while in game. The second one isn't really an issue I guess since the system was just released, but the available games are few. At least the types I liked on VR1
I'm Trying to Not Regret Buying a PSVR2
