Something that should have been mentioned is that some units can apparently have slightly more or less Mura than others but every headset will have some of course. I think the biggest difference is how much people actually notice it. IMO and experience from friends: the more time you have spent in VR (specifically PCVR like Index) the more likely you are to notice it. Much love! Join up in the discord! Discord.gg/thrill

With today's technology on lenses and panels, mura will be present for all VR headsets at some degree. Some people are more sensitive to it than others. Some aren't bothered by it as much. Hopefully the technology gets better in the future. Most people who are used to VR already know about this and are accustomed to it already. Most VR newbies will probably notice it and it just depends on how sensitive they are to it.

To be honest, I have a 3080 with a quest 2 and I am really happy with it. However, today my psvr2 arrived and I must say that I prefer the psvr because of my own preferences: Oled, Fov, Vibration/adaptive trigger and eye tracking… I also love the fact that it’s just plug and play and works 100% (so far… haha) without the infinite adjustments I have to make with the pcvr

no man's sky on PC? launch oculus, link headset, launch steamvr (and whatever other apps you normally use with it like OVRAS and overlays), close all the trash apps bogging down performance, then launch no man's sky no man's sky on psvr? connect headset, launch no man's sky psvr2 is probably a better starter headset than quest in my opinion (especially for those not as technically inclined) for the simplicity alone ngl

I’ve been seeing a lot of KZbinrs falling in love with PSVR 2 and honestly I’m not really surprised. I tried Gran Turismo 7 in VR and it left me shaking because it feels so damn good. It’s something you have to experience in person to understand, words can’t properly describe the feeling. It makes non-VR racing games feel very weak in comparison now, and I say that as someone who also likes Forza. It’s just not the same anymore. VR elevates racing sims to a whole new level. I also tried RE Village, and just like RE7, I have to admit that first person Resident Evil is a lot better in VR if you actually want to feel scared. The first time I played RE7 in VR I actually had to take breaks every 5 minutes because it was too much. You feel scared by everything around you and even start to feel paranoid in a way because VR actually puts you into the game. It’s not like gaming from your couch and being able to see everything between you and your TV. In VR, all you see is what’s in the game, all around you, and you feel extremely vulnerable as a result. It makes the horror experience an actual experience. Nowhere to run unless you take off the PSVR. It’s a terrifying feeling and it’s a total game changer.

If they put in even a little effort I'd say they can't drop the ball any harder than Meta/Facebook. Those guys had all the cards in their hands at one time, but instead of letting the devs they absorbed go hog wild to create something everyone would want to experience they tried to make it into an actual digital mall/conference room with 1996 3D graphics. They didn't even realise that games always have streamlined menu based shops because actual real life shopping is horribly boring. It's sad, because experiences and games like Lone Echo showed their talent really knows what it was doing. Shutting down that associated Echo VR future sports game "Because it had just tens of thousands of players" is ridiculous. Those numbers show that there is potential in the game they could expand on.

This thing is so good, if they secure HL:A (already getting beat saber as well) and release even 1 or 2 Sony first party games on this, it will sell like crazy I'd bet. @@trumplostlol3007 Not all games that are available on the Quest have bad graphics on PC. There are plenty of games that have fantastic graphics when played in PCVR. I feel like most reviews, including this one, overlook how simple and great the IPD adjustment and eye tracking process is. As someone who occasionally has friends/fam/gf over for shared VR gaming experiences, it is great to know that we can all visibly check the placement of their eyes and tracking accuracy with just a couple of button presses. No more guesstimating and taking the headset off to adjust (Quest 2) a measly 3 settings. Now we can visually confirm the optimal IPD and tracking without the user taking off the headset and easily make minor adjustments without much interruption. Also, not needing to buy / set up bay stations is great. Great review though, as always. I'm pretty happy with my PS VR2, and was also bothered by the mura - though thankfully got over it quickly; and friends don't even really notice. The only major thing holding this headset back IMO is lack of PC compatibility. I'd gladly put away my Quest 2 for good, or sell it - if it had Steam VR support. One can only hope there will be a day.

I say "Mainstream VR" for a very specific and literal reason It's a big step in making VR more _mainstream_ . Well done on the price recommendation breakdown. It has to be looked at in the same way as if you already had a gaming PC and then want to just add a VR headset on, versus needing to buy a full rig *plus* the headset. I think the real make or break for PSVR2 will be the games on the platform, and not just arcade one-offs you load up a couple times and forget them, but true full length campaign titles. If we were to see huge IPs like The Last of Us, God of War, Spider-man, etc. all get proper VR treatment, it could create a whole new wave of VR gaming with quality over quantity like Meta's strategy was. No lie, I'd buy a PS5 and PSVR2 immediately if they brought out a Last of Us VR game that was something like Half-Life: Alyx, wherein it happens between certain games. Seeing a clicker in VR would make me cry with fear but also make me so incredibly happy. lol

I've found that the PSVR2 is for sure a good headset. The biggest drawback honestly is the mura but like Thrill mentioned you can get over it and its not always game breaking. I feel the best reasons to invest in the PSVR2 is for the haptics, adaptive triggers, oled screen, and potential VR game support. I personally was already sold after seeing how gorgeous resident evil 8 feels in it. I've also started playing Pavlov again and haven't had that much fun in that game in a very long time. From what I've noticed with VR veterans is that it does reignite that VR excitement and has done so for me. If you have the cash I think its a good investment while waiting for the VR market to get itself together and pull all the good pieces from all current headsets together into one.

The biggest drawback of psvr2 isn't the headset imo, it's the console itself. Luckily an adapter for PC is coming soon. I expect when people super sample the resolution of their games on PC like we do with every other headset, it will show what the headset can do. I mean, don't buy it for pc obviously, even with the adapter, there's no support so chances are it can stop working with pc anytime, plus there's better things around that price, and even if they don't come with foveated rendering, you can put an addon later (yes even in the bigscreen beyond you can fit it in). But if you already have one and a PC I'd try it just to see the difference. It would be cool if the PS5 Pro could push gt7 and other games to at least 90 fixed fps to avoid the reprojection and have a smoother feeling but didn't happen with psvr1 won't happen here either

Don't let the Mura issue stop you from buying the headset. You notice it when you look for it, but when you're focusing on the game you simply look right through it without even noticing it. It's similar to the blurriness we see around the edges of most VR headsets as a result of the lenses. When you look for it, it's really blurry you're on the edge. But, you hardly ever notice it when you're focusing on the game.

Depends on the game. Some games like RE8 border on unplayable when you're in a dark area, because the Mura layer is so thick that you can't see anything beyond it. Sadly, since I am a big horror fan when it comes to VR, I imagine this will be an ongoing issue for me. I know some people can 'get used to it', and maybe for people who have never used any other VR set it is fine, but after coming off of the Quest 2, the thick Mura feels like a step backwards in terms of image-quality - even if the actual resolution and game graphics are better.

Same, it's 100% there and apparent but once I'm in a game I don't even think about it, the brightness the blacks the colors and clarity are still fantastic, it's just a con, and it doesn't have to be perfect as I really enjoy it, my biggest complaint would be the front pad is not the most comfortable. To play fair, Mura is found in LCD as well - OLED isnt the only one having this problem. It happens because the "color" isnt all the same per group of sub pixels. Its more of a factor issue/Quility design than it is with the technology it self. Problem is for VR - there isnt a good way to correct for this and something Meta at the time did try to fix over software (because it can be to some level). Thats why on Meta hardware - all OLED will have not as black pixels to fix this almost turning a light gray instead. Normally this isnt a problem for other designs of the technology, but we're soo zoom in for VR we can see this small differences and thus creates the Mura effect. You would need to test all panels for VR and correct the values at the controller level to better fix the issue (aka, going back to the software fix), but without a way to really test them out in the field - it becomes impossible to really push for that. The other problem is that groups of sub pixels wear out differently - so the problem will come back over and over again. Again, both LCD and Oled have this issue - the only problem is OLED has a faster wear leveling than LCD thus the problem doesnt show up as much for LCD. The trade offs of course is OLED vs LCD still stands - so I would rather have OLED or move to something other than LCD if we can later on. Mura was not a big glearing problem for me - even if black enviroments only because it added the feeling of what I normally see in dark areas. Aka, some people also live with a mura effect on the daily because their eyes also pick up light differently. OLED still has more Pro than Cons if you ask me something I think most people can live with vs all the Cons LCD brings to the table over all. In the future, I know its something both LCD and OLed is working on - even new VR displays also know this is a problem and working hard to correct for this. I know single stacking Pixels (having all three colors) stack can help with some of this and its the future for the smaller screen designs and helps with the spacing between the groups (smaller SDE).

one thing of note is its gonna be supported longer than ps5's lifespan just because of the fact that it would be compatible with the ps6 and there'd be no reason why ps6 vr games wont get a ps5 port, psvr1 got fully dropped just because it used inferior tracking that needed a camera. Meta has decided that its going to upgrade its hardware every 3 years which isnt a bad thing, it just means your going to have to upgrade sooner

I see the mura effect mainly only when I’m looking at flat screens now. In Kayak VR and Horizon, it pretty much goes away when I’m immersed. And GT7… I picked it up on sale shortly before the PSVR2 launch hoping it would just be another fun experience or something to show off. I’m really not a racing game guy or a car guy. I don’t have a fancy rig, but I did swap to tilt controls. All that said I’ve dumped considerable time into that game. I’m actually loving the different cars. They feel different to me. I get different sensations driving a Mustang than a Prius. The experience is absolutely amazing. Despite having saved up the money for a PSVR2, a proper racing rig is probably a little out of my current price range, but I’m actually pricing them out and considering buying one.

I paid $1700+tax for my RTX 4090. The total cost of a PS5 and a PSVR2 makes it a great bargain. If they bring social VR apps to the PS5, which will inevitably happen, then it'll hit really hard against PCVR. I don't even mind that. VR needs plenty of competition to keep the fires burning at these companies. Bigscreen Beta and VR Chat would be the obvious choices to begin with. Meta owns Beat Saber, but there are plenty of other alternatives like Audiotrip for example. Basically what I'm saying is that PSVR2 is purely in Sony's hands to make successful, and it won't be hard to do.

I find the comment laughable. - The sharpness/clarity of PSVR2 is horrible compared to every other headset I`ve tried. The G2 (despite its poor edge to edge clarity) is vastly superior to PSVR2. - And there is also the issue of the lack of super sampling on PSVR2. The difference between 100% and 400% Super sampling on PC is profound. PSVR2 looks to me like it is running at less than 'native" resolution most of the time and Sony have done their best to hide this by blurring the image with a filter. - If you simply enjoy better colors at the expense of every other metric like sharpness, clarity in motion, reprojection, sweet spot, edge to edge clarity then FINE I guess but that is not how most people would view it.

Mura is there, but it's not the biggest problem imo. I think the diffusion layer is the biggest issue, the same as in PSVR1, but here is more noticeable, probably because of the higher res and the quite null SDE. Maybe the problem is the coupling of mura and diffusion layer. Horizon suffers from bad reprojection/motion-smoothing. SadlyItsBradley complains for too much high persistence of pixels. Luckily most of issues can be addressed through software updates, except the diffusion layer. Sony are you there? Are you listening to the community?

Weird, the Mura effect doesn't bother me at all, it's super subtle except for some scenarios, and even then if you don't look for it, it's a non-issue. My only "disappointment" so far has been the graphical fidelity of the games. Not the display, mind you - some less demanding or well-tuned games like Song in the Smoke look SUPER crisp. But then you have RE8 which yes, looks really good in terms of textures, models and effects. But... the resolution can get really low. I think they use some kind of dynamic resolution so there are times when I'm like this is great! But more often than not you see something that looks straight from PSVR1, low-res and lots of jaggies and shimmering which detracts from the otherwise great graphics. Hopefully as time goes on developers will learn to better utilise the foveated rendering and we get AAA games running at native resolution

I see it as you. With the hardware, PSVR2 + PS5, Sony did drop a solid base. Now its up to them to give it a life. But its also to us to not expect the wrong things. VR is still a niche and so the development costs per player are much higher. This means, we can't expect AAA VR games with the same amount of content to the same price as a flat game. As long as VR is not getting out of this niche, there are two options for games that are developed as VR specific games: 1. Get the price to the same level of flat games and deliver with less content 2. Get the amount of content to the same level of flat games but sell it at a hinger price Horizon Cotm is an example for Nr. 1

I've been excited for PSVR2 for a while, and it finally arrived after what seems like forever, and it's amazing. Sure, there are a couple flaws like the sweet spot being small, but that's quite easy to fix, and is excusable given the amazing specs for the price. After having the Quest 1 and Quest 2, this is my first time experiencing high quality, uncompressed VR. One of my favorite things about the PSVR2 is that it blocks out *all* light. The Quest 2 has quite a large gap around your nose, and that breaks immersion quite a bit. But, the PSVR2 is just completely dark with no light leak, and comes at the cost of having to use the passthrough button often, but it's really great and adds so much immersion. The FOV is also noticeably bigger, and is big enough to the point where I don't really notice the edges of the lenses much, compared to Quest 2 which feels like looking through rolls of toilet paper. I do wish they could've released Beat Saber on PSVR2 at launch (it seems pretty easy to port since the game has no joystick movement, but maybe they need to refresh the copyright licenses for the DLC.) At least I still have my Quest 2 for Beat Saber. Hopefully Beat Games doesn't take a year like they did with multiplayer on the first PSVR.

I've owned a few VR systems and I'm shocked to be this disappointed by PSVR2. My original PSVR, Rift CV1, and Quest2 all run smoother, don't need to be as perfectly positioned on my face, and have more comfortable controllers. Should I just return it and wait for them to at least fix the lenses? I mean, the sweet spot on this thing is tiny! OK, back to the beginning. So I convinced myself to go out and buy PSVR2 under the assumption that with foveated rendering running on an optimised games console with high res OLED screens, it would feel like an upgrade to a next gen headset. It doesn't. In some ways it's worse. To give you an idea of my baseline here, I actually fired up my old original PSVR for a bit of nostalgia the day before picking up the new headset, so I have a recent comparison with that and the Quest 2 running lots of standalone games and streaming games like Lone Echo I & II and Half-Life: Alyx. So I get it home and plug it in - easy enough, although I guess I'll have to get use to the annoying cord again after enjoying wireless Quest 2 streaming for so long (a week later the cord is still annoying me). I grab the controllers and here's my 1st WTF. They feel baaaad in my only-slightly-above-average sized hands. The buttons and sticks are not near where my thumb wants them to be and the weight of the tracking ring doesn't feel balanced so it keeps wanting to pull to one side, out of my grip. And the grip! Ye gods. Doesn't resemble anything ergonomic. Before I've even turned it on I'm thinking "someone had better make some aftermarket grips soon or my hands are going to lockup just trying to hold these things". I go and pickup my Quest Touch controllers just to check if I'm going crazy - nope, they still feel as ideal as the day I first picked them up. I turn the system on, start the setup process and follow the instructions. I put the headset on and - wait a minute, where is the forehead padding? The original PSVR was super comfortable, so I'm amazed to find this seems to feel somewhat less solved (Admittedly the all the rubber pealed off my old PSVR headset just the other day, which may have been an omen, in hindsight...) However, the black n white passthrough is very slick and the system did a great job of directing me to where my controllers lay. I fumble around trying to figure out which way they are supposed face (they're so weird!) and I try to make them sit comfortably in my hand for another few minutes. The room boundary setup worked well, but didn't really seem like any sort of real improvement over the Quest2 process. In the first dark screen (fairly early in the process from memory) I notice how truly black everything is. Those OLED screens are tight! The rubber curtain does a perfect job of blocking out all outside light with a good fit (on my face at least). But then the glare and the god rays hit me, and this is my 2nd WTF moment. While the Fresnel lenses seem somewhat improved, they are still Fresnel lenses and still pretty bad in black screens with bright objects. Then I noticed there was also red and blue ghosting of all text being shown. I completed the eye tracking and IPD calibration but things were still looking pretty blurry and ghostly afterwards. I move the headset around for a while and slide the goggles in and out trying to find the sweet spot. When it dawned on me that I could actually get it clear as long as it wasn't allowed to move a millimetre in any direction, that was my 3rd WTF moment. I took it off and threw on the Quest2 to compare. The Quest2 was instantly clear and I noticed for the first time how huge the sweet spot is... Can anyone tell me if this small sweet spot problem is a typical feature of systems that have eye tracking? My 4th WTF was looking at the PS5 home screen in VR. Rather than the nice immersive VR environment you get with Quest and SteamVR, PlayStation just gives you darkness with a flat virtual screen floating in front of you that just has the same home screen that you see on your TV. Except that IT FREAKING WARPS AND WOBBLES WHEN I MOVE MY HEAD. Like, what am I missing here??? Why does it distort like that? Why is this experience so bad? I try to talk myself down: "maybe it will run smoother once it's running a game..." So I grab the game code from the box and install the bundled flagship game, Horizon: Call of the Mountain. I dial in the calibration and get the sweet spot locked in as well as I can. I fire up the game and OH GODS WHY IS IT JANKY? - __ - OK, team. How did we get here? You've all played Alyx, right? RIGHT?! Well, this ain't that. *epic facepalm* There's often juddering or ghosting while just walking around in Horizon. Holding and interacting with objects doesn't seem to feel easy or natural. The controls aren't intuitive. The grip button on the side of the controller is not proportional like on the Touch controllers. It's just a click button. It sucks. Immersion feels hard to come by. I'm being constantly taken out by visual glitchyness while moving around (intermittent poor frame rate?), and my cramping hands as I struggle to hold objects and get my tools out and use them. And there's that fricken cable again! Ohhhh, and there goes the last of my controller power *goes looking for a second USB C charging cable somewhere in the house*, *grumble grumble* Despite me having pretty decent VR legs, all the next day at work I felt like my desk and my computer screen were shifting in and out. I didn't feel any nausea, but my whole reality felt jittery and unstable. It would have been a mighty unsettling experience if I had been a VR noob and that was my first VR rodeo. Sheesh! I still didn't believe it. I fired up Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge and went back and forth between standalone Quest 2 and PSVR 2. I positioned myself very carefully at the exact same spot at the end of the bar in the cantina and I could discern that the PSVR 2 has a very slightly wider field of view, but it's not a big enough difference that you would ever notice it normally. On PSVR2 the textures look more realistic and the lighting and shadow effects are there, but none of that really affects gameplay, which is basically the same, except that on PS my hands hurt and I keep dropping my blaster :/ Soooo, I guess that's it. I guess I'm just writing all of this because I think I need to take it back to the shop, but I don't really want to. I'm honestly heart broken :( I'm sure there will be software fixes and upgrades. Addon grips will become available for the controllers that may improve them somewhat. But I feel like the constant struggle with blurriness is going to put people off playing it as much. I'm afraid to say it, but I think this system, in its current form, might actually be bad for VR :(

I don't mind the grainy image, given all of the features that the PSVR2 has. VR for me over the last 6 years has been accepting compromise. First with the screen door affect on the Vive and Vive Pro. Then the HP Reverb G2 it was a limited max IPD, which was just too small for me, and Windows Mixed Reality (horrible). The Vive Pro 2 was dissapointing, compaired to the older Vive's, they reduced the max IPD from 74mm to 70mm, the lens sweet spot was too small, all of this made it useless for me. Now I use a Pimax 8KX, which is just big and still has some very small screen door affect, is fiddily to set up, but otherwise is fantastic.

With the psvr2 pc adapter being released for some time now, will you be doing an updated review of this? I have the headset, and so far I have mixed feelings about it. I believe it's mostly due to software at the moment but other games I haven't noticed many problems, so it's kinda weird.

Very sensible and (as usual) in depth review, Thrill. Hope you'll have reason to do an update in 6 months to a year because the quality and quantity of the library has caught up with the headset. I will say, though my usual motto is, "Never try anything new; let someone else try it first, and see if it kills them," this is the first VR headset I've actually gone full "early adopter" on by pre-ordering.

Once you look at the games not the mura it fades away. It’s a fucking great device and since Sony was releasing PSVR one games into last year I’m sure the games will keep coming. It’s the high attach rate that really makes this worth it for Sony so if VR users are buying more games then they will release more to make money.

I love pretty much everything about this headset, besides the reprojection in the games I've tried so far. It's almost a deal breaker for me. Anyone know if this can be corrected in software or firmware updates? Also my right controller has to be reset upon every startup of a game, so that's an annoyance.

They're using a system similar to SteamVR or ASW on PC which is terrible. They should have built a system like AppSW on Quest that actually works. Without getting into the technical details, this would require more work from game devs but would have eliminated all the issues people are having. Making the change now would require the games to all be patched.

I really feel like they could've gone with pancake lenses and an LCD screen. Pancake lenses are more expensive but they also would've cut costs with the LCD screen instead of the OLED. The mura issue would've been gone and I've also heard LCD screens are more clearer for VR. The headset wouldn't be so damn huge which is what mostly makes it look so outdated nowadays in VR. I can't imagine how lightweight the headset would've been with pancake lenses, it would've been absolutely perfect..

I'm loving it. But it's not perfect yet. The good thing about going back to 2D playing something like Battlefield 2042, is that you really appreciate the resolution of modern games again. Even on my 7 year old SONY 4K TV. Because lets face it, PSVR2 is good but it feels more like 720p in the distance in GT7 for example up to maybe 1440p in showroom close ups. But that's the software side of it, the PS5 just can't handle more pixels, remember it has to render two images and more frames. In Cinema mode watching 4K content you can see the full 2K resolution when setting the screen size option to it's fullest 💟

Having been spoiled by high-end PCVR headsets, I was also disappointed initially with the numerous issues on PSVR2. My expectations were just over-inflated. having gotten used to it over a week, I'm finding the flaws to be acceptable considering its running triple-A games on a console. RE: Villiage VR in HDR got me so immersed, reminded me of how I felt playing Half-Life Alyx for the first time.

I really don`t understand why more PC users don`t seem to be aware of the mod scene. There are perfect mods that let you play Res Evil 2,3,7,8 and numerous other AAA games already / All Unreal games very soon. These games look vastly better on PC because you can use super sampling to effectively increase the perceived resolution of the headset. After having played through RE8 on pc , I was shocked by how bad it was on PSVR2 (visually) aside from the colors PSVR2 is really poor IMO.

I’ve played over 10 different games on my PSVR 2 headset and haven’t had any issues with mura affecting my experience. When consciously looking for it, it was extremely faint and not near as bad as the example video you gave. After I noticed it and began focusing on the game world instead of nearly crossing my eyes to find the mura, I have never seen it again. I’d imagine it would vary from headset to headset, but mine is not an issue at all.

I think that reviews like this miss the audience for this type of device: *console gamers* -- which is a particular type of gamer that values high quality (relative to price of hardware) and pick-up-and-play games. They come at it from the perspective of an individual that has experience with many devices or from PC -- but this is a TINY relative minority of gamers, and does not speak to the target audience for this device. Weather supportive or critical of the technology, what is happening on the PC will ultimately be *_invisible_* to 99% of the individuals that will buy the PSVR2. This device stands apart from other devices on the market, despite doing something similar. Even the Quest 2 is a hard comparison to make in that the quality delta and price delta (if you consider the purchase of the PS5) is large enough to place them in different sub-categories of product. I think Sony has NEARLY PERFECTLY positioned PSVR2 (flaws and all) for its target, and there is a common trend: those that play PCVR games think the PSVR2 is fine on average with some being north or south of that assessment. But those that are coming from PSVR1 or Quest 2, or are trying VR for the first time, are having life-changing, transformative experiences. I also think that PSVR2 marks an important cultural shift around VR with the increase in VR-modes in traditionally flatscreen-only games, and their much lauded reception. This will mean higher quality game content (if not in mechanics) for VR on console and PC, but may also crowd out smaller 2 hour VR-only games, or encourage that they too have flatscreen-modes. But I suspect it will be a better situation than the mobile-first era, ushered in by the Quest.

I think we need another 10 years in order to have something that it works as we would expect to work.. that we can focus on game not on technical issues. Game shouldn’t have screens door effect FOV as much us human eye 240Hz refresh rate At last 16K resolution And no lagging ect And console or pc that will be able to supply enough power to give amazing graphic full details not a “light” verios as VR have on order for game to be playable This will be for me VR head set that i will be interested in order to get full immersion VR experience All other is just beta versions .

This is as of now the most powerful standardized hardware combo in the VR market. People underestimate how standardization can help in expediting development and lower costs in the process. VR developers would be stupid not to bring their games to the system considering they can completely tailor the experience on actually capable decent mid-range hardware that's not too dissimilar to the PC hardware they're already developing for. Maybe in 5 more years you'll be able to get a similar experience in a Quest form factor but until then, this is the best entry into VR available and it is guaranteed to succeed because of it.

Quest 3 is already powerful enough to bring games like Half-Life: Alyx natively to standalone. The "practical game limitations" is WAAAAAAY smaller than you seem to think. Shit, even games like Asgard's Wrath II can run on Quest 2, let alone even Quest 3! Also, developers aren't stupid. Nobody that isn't directly funded by Sony is making PSVR2 exclusives. EVERYTHING ELSE on the system is an uprezzed Quest port because THAT'S WHERE THE MONEY IS! "not too dissimilar to the PC hardware they're already developing for".... What the hell VR developers are you even talking about??? O_o NOBODY makes PCVR exclusives anymore! The last notable one to release was Lone Echo II in 2021!

The smartest move for Sony would be to open it up to the PC market. Even if they do that "unintentional" through "leaked" drivers. It would force the industry in the right direction. The direction consumers want to go anyway, not what certain CEOs think. Horizon is an amazing IP and an PSVR exclusive. Buying a console to play just one title isn't unheard of.

The PSVR original had that Mura effect as well - and when I switched up to PCVR, the Reverb G2, I really - really did not miss the color richness and deep black levels nearly as much as I was glad to be rid of the Mura. Until the PSVR2, I wasn't even aware this was a wider problem in OLED screens. My only experience with OLED before was the PSVita - which had an absolutely gorgeous display. I had just figured the PSVR used sub-standard low-quality screens. Now I'm reconsidering my purchase of a PSVR2 pending release of PC official/community drivers. I still really like the single-wire interface and eye-tracking in a mass-market headset, but it's really not much of an upgrade compared to my current headset... and a downgrade in many areas. I guess it's really just a waiting game to see what Valve announces with the Deckard, but all indications so far seem to point to it being more of a Meta competitor, rather than an Index upgrade.

And there lies the biggest issue with the PSVR 2. It's locked down. If it supported PCVR, we'd see a FLOOD of PC users buying them, which means we'll finally have a proper "affordable" PCVR headset with stuff like eye tracking, high res displays, and good controllers. On top of that, devs would be forced to improve their games to take advantage of the new hardware, which in turn means that better games come out. Better games means more sales of VR headsets to play said games, more people in VR means more development.
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades Жыл бұрын
@@notlNSIGHT Problem is, if it was PC compatible, it would be more expensive. The PSVR 2 is such a good value BECAUSE it's tied into a closed ecosystem. Sony is probably selling the headset at a loss (or maybe an incredibly slim profit), and they can do this because they make money off of every game purchased for it. They wouldn't be able to rely on that revenue if they made it PC compatible, and would therefore have to add in a profit margin to the hardware by increasing its cost. As for the flood of PC users, I'm somewhat skeptical of that as well, especially if the price were higher (which again, it would be). Considering the Quest 2 has been out for ages, costs significantly less (especially before the price hike), and is PC compatible, I'm not sure there are a ton of PC gamers who are just waiting to buy VR headsets. I'm sure it'd expand the PC VR userbase a bit, but most of the people buying it would be existing PC VR users, which is a fairly small audience (around 3 million, according to the latest Steam survey), many of whom wouldn't bother upgrading if they already have a headset like the Index or maybe the Reverb G2. At the end of the day, I think they'd lose more potential customers by having to raise the price than they'd gain from adding PC compatibility.
@ninetail11111
@ninetail11111 Жыл бұрын
@@GreyMatterShades The raise of cost wouldn't make any sense since it is all software compatibility. The first psvr can be used with the pc using a software. Sony just has this weird thing with PC and only now started to shift some things over. A lot of people are hesitant in buying VR headsets due to the lack of AAA quality games coming out at a reasonable pace and the strong barrier of entry.

@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades Жыл бұрын
@@ninetail11111 The raise in cost would be required because the hardware isn't profitable. Sony makes their money on games, not hardware. The PS5 was sold at a loss when it launched. After a year or so they started making a small profit off the disc version, but AFAIK the digital only PS5 is still sold for a loss. Sony can afford to sell the PS5 hardware at a loss because they make money off of every single PS5 game sold (whether it was developed by Sony or a third party, and whether it was purchased physically or digitally). It makes sense to sell their hardware at a loss because it will sell more units since the price is so low, and that means there are more people to buy games for that hardware. I expect the PSVR 2 is in a similar position (or if it isn't, it really should be). It probably costs Sony more than $550 to manufacture and ship a PSVR 2, but they can sell it at that price because they can count on people who buy a PSVR 2 also buying games for it, which is where Sony will make their money. If they brought it to PC, they would be losing money on every headset sold, with no way of profiting off of the games people are buying for it. Even if Sony ported games like Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon Call of the Mountain to PC to sell alongside PSVR 2, they couldn't count on PC players buying them, and they would be giving up part of their profits to Steam or Epic or whatever PC ecosystem was selling their games on PC. The only way that selling PSVR 2 on PC could be profitable for Sony is if they built a hefty profit margin into the cost of the headset, which means raising the price. This is one of the reasons why PC VR headsets are typically more expensive than headsets which are meant to be used within a specific ecosystem.

Id say the main thing that doesnt get me into the PSVR2 is just the lack of games. They are focusing more on the strategy of exclusivity. Like how people used to have to have an Xbox to have their beloved MasterChief. They want to focus on having a few titles that look REALLY good. But I will never choose that over the option of a large variety of games i can play with my friends, no matter how many individual polygons i have to look at.

I'm confused about the lack of people talking about the HD rumble. If I'm not mistaken they are the only vr controllers that have it and it feels incredible. Reminds me of how well tuned the joy cons on switch were with 1 2 switch. Feels so real and with thos triggers. If modders don't get this working on PC I'd like to see the controllers get added in some way. Though I guess a game would have to be made or modded with those features in mind. But it's so good. I do wish the headset felt stronger and they included like pulse headphones or something in box. The grainy look is annoying but compared to the color depth, contrast, accuracy and lack of halo effect makes it worth it I think. Still minor screen door but better then quest, rift, or vive. It also seems brighter?? Haven't had the privilege of touching an index or pimax though.
