Buying Ransomware Is Easier Than You Think

Simple, scalable and low-risk, ransomware makes for a particularly tidy cybercrime. These days prospective attackers don’t even have to create their own ransomware; they can simply buy it on the dark web. Bloomberg investigations reporter Drake Bennett procured some malware to see how easy it was to launch an attack.

I work in IT and it's pretty insane how people would be willing to read you their bank info or enter their bank credentials into an email because the email looked semi official. Ransomware is becoming more of a novelty these days when all you have to do is make a user thing they have a virus even if there is no real indication of it. Most hacking these days is social engineering.

@@campkira Attacks like NotPetya can also affect an entire network of computers, just by getting access to one. I think they just tested the most basic form of ransomware in this video

This could have been such a great video if they had included images and process flow representations of how the guy went from searching for ransomware as a service to infecting his boss' laptop. Instead they've made an 11+ min video with content that could've been represented in 53 seconds (the exact time stamp for when there is a typo in the video).

What’s missing from this story is the trust relationship between the two Bloomberg employees. Think about it like this, someone coming to break into your network doesn’t first notify you and there typically is some form of endpoint protection. They neglected to mention what safeguards were in place that this ransomware somehow mitigated.

Seems like they where mainly trying to make a point instead of show entertaining content. I'd imagine they didn't want to promote any specific dark web site or specific malware tool. I'm guessing that's why they didn't make this more entertaining and show us more.
