Hi Nigel they are radio masts when the ship is in port they are up when out at sea and they have planes up they are lowered
@paulrogers93242 жыл бұрын
The masts are wire antenna supports for HF communications. When aircraft were flying they were lowered to prevent the aircraft crashing into them. When there was no flying, they were raised to get the best possible communication ranges.

I totally agree. I bought the 1/350 USS Missouri and HMS Hood second hand for less than the original kit cost, plus both came with full upgrade kits that the previous owners must of purchased in addition.

Nigel, the jibs that are on each side of the ship support radio aerials to enable the ship to keep in contact with her aircraft and vice versa. Stowed up when there is no flying and down when flying takes place.

I've been looking out for second hand or started kits ever since I watched your started Antonov video and it's a great way of getting hold of rare kits, which has been very useful to me as I'm currently building different variants of the Spitfire and Hurricane. My best result was the Airfix 1/12 Bentley 4 1/2 litre (which I built when it was a new kit, which included a small electric motor). The kit's currently available, but is about £90. The engine had been built and parts of the bodywork were painted- all to an extremely high standard which I must try to match when I get round to building it. As well as that, there were a lot of duplicate parts included- if nothing else, they'll be potentially useful additions to the spares box. All for £50! Of course, it's essential to check before buying that the kit is complete, even when described as such- I came unstuck with my 1/48 Tamiya Lancaster, supposed to be complete, which had one sprue of engines missing. Luckily I found another part kit which included the parts I needed but that can't be relied upon. The extra details in your Ark Royal make it an absolute bargain! .

They are indeed, upright when not operating aircraft horizontal for flight ops. Cables strung between them if you are rigging it

Great bargain Nigel, amazing you got what appears to be every aftermarket set available - btw, according to online, the masts are aerials which could be lowered during flight ops to be clear of the flight paths

The Crane 'Thingys' swing out torpedo nets. Checkout pictures of the old WW1 battleships, they had these arms that laid sloping down the sides of the hull, they look a bit like gangplank ladders.
