Sometimes "chop" marks are on coins to see what else is in them. Very early silver coins have palladium in them. Silver and palladium have an affinity for each other and unless you electro-win the silver out they will chase each other through the refining process. Pure copper was almost unheard of before 1200 AD. They would just melt the copper out of the host rock. I'm an extractive metallurgist, i live in Arizona. I've worked in and around copper smelting all my life. In copper ore you will find Ag, Au, Pd, and to a lesser degree various other amounts of the platinum group sisters (Pt, Pd, Ir, Rh, Os, Rh). Not enough to mine on their own, but smelting large amounts of ore pure charge and using the copper as a collector you soon increase the amount of the PGM's, and other precious metals. Just a gold miner now. I have native gold for sale. Raw, melted, refined and melted, or as a 24kt powder for making jewelry. Thought y'all could use a little background on the refining process and what they don't tell you.
@GOLD_FEVER2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome. I am looking to get into some jewlery making myself (bought some wax molds and gonna practice carving them into rings ) and was thinking about how to purify the gold i find in the river... What is the best way to bring gold to say 20 karat or 22 karat? Is cupelling the best easier way to do it? Or is the chemical process the only one that ACTUALLY purifies the gold properly?
@richardbeee2 жыл бұрын
@@GOLD_FEVER Chemically is 100% used for .9999 (24 kt) fine. However, cupelling is great if your not looking for 24 kt. Inquart your gold with at least 4 times the amount of silver. Then just dissolve the Ag using HNO3 (50%) solution. The "black" residue left will be at least 23.5% gold

The Antoninianus of Gallienus (253-268 AD.) is typical of the debasement of coins in the mid third century Roman Empire. The empire was again mired in civil war. The Persians and the Germanics invading the frontier. In order to fund the troops and keep them loyal, large amounts of silver coins were needed. Gallienus was so desperate to fund the troops, that he began silver coating the bronze antoninianus. During the reign of Gordian lll (238-244 AD) the antoninianus replaced the denarius as the primary Roman denomination. So the troops got paid in silver coins and the mainstream population received the silver coated coins.

I absolutely love the videos with Guy, he is such a wealth of knowledge of a vast variety of subjects and is a natural presenter! Sadly the Canadian $ is almost like the Mexican Peso, against the USD. Otherwise I would be chomping on the bit to buy from him! He is a dealer I really could support, huge fan here of Guy! I love his perspective on the hobby, how it will continue with new and youth coming in! I started in earnest collecting and stacking silver in 2012, July 1,2020. My first purchase was off our Canadian shopping network, coin show, run by the biggest dealer here, Steve Bromberg. Thankfully the 9999 silver mint set hasn't dropped too much. I started teaching my son history as I started collecting a variety of circulation silver and nickel coins. Our Royal Canadian mint is big on minting quarters to mark historic events, so this aspect of coin roll hunting is still interesting! We also have a yearly circulation $1/$2 commerative coins as well, they're usually 5 to 12 million mintage. coins and currency are wonderful tools to bring history alive. I would love to see even more videos with Guy, some episodes I rewatch 2-3 times. There is so much wisdom packed into each episode! Unfortunately his assessment of our current government is true! I was shocked, when they tipped their hand, by freezing bank accounts, during the trucker protests! Its wise to have a little extra of essentials needed to live stocked up, especially non perishables. We could be heading back to times of the Great Depression. I feel its a positive move to go back to a local economy and be as self suffiencient as possible. Then you are not at the mercy of any controlling country! Our Canadian bank in 2001, sold all of our stored gold. There is an interview with David Dodge, saying he felt gold was an outdated relic, that it made more sense to buy foriegn treasury bills/bonds. Canada is probably the only country with no gold reserves, it stated this in the video. Please bring us as many Coin Guy videos as possible! Those ancients were drool worthy. Blessings to both you and Coin Guy! I wish he had his own weekly show, however, I know he is super busy and needs to take good care of his health.

We had institutions for the mentally ill when I was younger, all the do-gooders had the institutions shut down because they felt institutions were not humane, in this day and time I believe that they would be run better than what we understood back 50 years ago. An institution would be much better than living rough on the streets where vulnerability is prayed upon. History or hindsight is our best teacher, we just don’t seem to listen any more…….

Love listening to Coin Guy! In Roman times there was not enough Imperial minted coinage. Local cities and provinces were permitted by Rome to mint their own coins called Roman Provincial Coinage, sometimes also called Greek Imperial because many of the mints were in formerly Greek territories and many coins used either Greek or Latin language on the coins. They were sometimes later stamped, countermarked with letters or symbols to indicate they were legit, weighed the proper amount, approved for use. There is a book written by C. Howgego "Greek Imperial Countermarks" that is the most comprehensive listing of these countermarks. Today you can find pennies stamped with various designs but this is just for fun or advertising and does not have an official purpose like ancient Roman counter stamped coins. Some ancient silver coins have test cuts on them. They were cut open to verify they were real silver and not fake. Coins have been faked since coins were first made about 6th century BC. I have a couple real ancient Greek Athens silver tetradrachms and an ancient fake one, copper center overlaid with silver. There are online sites to learn about ancient coins, buy them and reference books also. Learn and buy from trusted dealers so you don't pay too much or buy a fake.

The bronze roman coin (chop mark) could be a countermark - to revalue a worn coin etc. If so it will be highly collectible. The Denarius of Macrinus is scarce. Later Roman coins were officially silvered (plated) due to contemporary inflation. The silvering fell off quickly on most of these coins. Julia Domna's Husband Severus died near where I live - York(UK). I only do bullion though, but the ancient coins are much more interesting. The coins of the 12 ceasars are particularly valueable.

I have collected paper notes for as long as I have been in coin collecting. I’m happy to see this category being taken seriously in your dialogue. What I’ve learned from many years of research and experience with paper notes really comes down to *Condition* of whatever notes you choose to own. Condition is important because paper is bound to deteriorate at some point. Even with the bio chemical free clear sleeves, the paper will continue to deteriorate due to fungus or bacterial contamination inside a house or safe. For this reason alone, always take the best possible notes with minimal wear, writing or graffiti, push pin holes and tearing. Start with notes that you can afford such as silver certificates or 1928 to 34 dates US small notes. For example you shouldn’t get into any large size oldies when you’re starting to collect. I really like small notes from $1 to $100 currencies. Red stamp $5 notes are very affordable and some are really valuable if you’re trying to read as much information about them as possible. 41:49

The Coin Guys take on mental illness/drug abuse is spot on. We have no facilities for them today. In the 60's to 70's you never saw people with severe mental problems walking the streets. That is something that would take at least a decade to put in place, if they started in good faith today...because it takes so long to educate the proper professionals. I guess they think that it is less cruel for these people to live in homeless camps than to be in a facility where they are properly cared for.

Coinage was different sized because it was worth its weight in the metal 10 silver dimes weighs the same as 4 silver quarters or 2 halves The nickel is bigger than the dime as it’s copper but 5 Pennies we’re the same copper or metallic value/content and value as 1 nickel Silver dollars at 0.77 Troy oz vs a fractional dollar at 0.715 t oz were heavier with alleged purpose Even though both were $1, you got 0.06 t oz more with the silver dollar Although never fully explained by the government The silver gold ratio was 16:1 for ever … and 20 silver dollars had the same value as a $20 pre-33 gold coin At .77 t oz *20, you’ll see it’s 15.4 And as the pre-33 gold is 90% pure you’ll quickly see the amount of silver in $20 silver dollars was the same value as one $20 gold coin with the Ag:AU ratio at 16:1 That’s the reason for varying sizes in coinage Of course today no metal or value in coins but They’re not going to change the traditional size of the coins do the how long they’ve circulated as such and how ingrained they are in culture
