Buying the Firewire Mashup

I wanted to try something a little different this time. Rather than just deciding on a board, I thought maybe I would give the subscribers/viewers the choice. In my community section, I listed 5 boards that people could vote on and out of 227 vote, 55% of you wanted to see me review the Firewire Mashup.

Yep 5'4", for sure. I just bought the same size from directly from Firewire as I saw it was currently in-stock in the Futures configuration. I'm 5'10", 163 lbs. Awhile ago I would have opted for the 5'5" but I'm finding my liter range for waves waist to overhead are more in the 26-27.5 liter range. Plus, as you know Helium floats way more than it's stated literage. I think for your weight you should be in the 25-27 liters range. I've noticed lower volume boards will often go faster, and certainly more maneuverable, than the same board with more liters. I've found this the hard way by buying 2 sizes of the same board. I'm always going with the lower volume one. I've been searching for a smaller board for my home break. Been shredding the 5'3" chumlee for years, but need something with less tail width and the no-brainer was sort of a dud. Hopefully, this is the board. I'm not a big fan of Machado boards or wide points forward from center as I'm a back-footed surfer. I think the 5'4" will put my front foot in a good place along the axis, however. I'll let you know when I get mine. p.s. Still waiting on that Sci-Fi 2.0 review. I'm gonna have another crack at mine with large fin templates this time.

Knowing you either buy the boards you're previewing or borrow your friends makes me respect your channel more. This is a major issue in general. I've been out of surfing for about 10 years due to health issues and 2 summers ago I started surfing again. Now the industry has changed, boards are more expensive, and surfboard are all over the place. For me, I've always ridden off the rack high performance short boards but my last trip to Costa in 2005, my 6'4 Natural Art wasn't right for me anymore. I'm bigger, stronger, and my approach to surfing a wave had changed and improved with more flow. Now days all the short boards are skateboard influenced with shorter planing surfaces. So I went with a board I was loving before I had to quit, CI Water Hog 7'2. It's a great board for me but now I have my legs back under me, I need a little more performance, so I bought the HI Mid6 and love it but, I spent over $900, on 3 different short boards for 6'1 to 6'6. I got lucky finding the Mid6. I really wish there was some way to try board out. I heard some places (surf shops and shapers) do test days but I think there could be a market in having something like that. So many people are riding the wrong boards Bec of this. Anyway, keep up the great work and I always recommend a midlengths. They're better boards for most surfers. Don't ride boards Bec it's what the pros are riding. Find the board that suits your surfing style. 🤙😷🇺🇲

The Mid6 looks good. I wish though they had a 6'8 in that board. Me at 138lbs these days can't push the longer boards around. Another issue I see too is that people rush their progression. I did that and now I am paying for it. I spend most of my time fixing bad habits..one thing is for sure. As I surf longer my style and preference changes. As much as I loved certain boards, I find myself liking different things as time goes on. I will have to hop on a Mid6 asap. The industry has changed and is changing. A lot of it is marketing. The boards are good but marketing definitely has changed the types of boards out there. As for price, I remember way back when I thought $300 was too much. Lol.

Thanks Thomye. Your content is fantastic. Because your engagement style is spot on Surfboard marketing - the temptations of it - is really challenging I have been surfing less than 5 years, basically a weekend warrior. I have already been through so many boards - new and used - in my time. Only the last year or so have I settled down and spent more time on individual boards. So much money wasted, chasing the dream We need more content like yours that isn’t Mikey February killing it on a twin pin or Asher Pacey on a 4’10 plasmic. Even though it is epic to watch, 99% of us will never come even close to their level of skill with those boards

@@SkipperSurfReview I see those numbers at Bolsa often but luckily, just a mile away is HB proper. Today it was 1' bolsa wavestorm day so I went to HB and got some 2 to 3 clean but super mush waves. not sure you guys get this on the east coast but HB gets this massive deep section so waves will stand up on the outside, break but flatten out, then go flat through the middles, sometimes not makeable even on a longboard, and then closes out on the inside. It's terrible.

As you can see in my recent video, thanks to your video i can 100% pump down the line using the top of the wave for speed. Now it’s time for me to start on my bottom and top turn. Seems like you have had good results with Firewire / Machado Boards so I put in a vote there. Would be interested in comparison to twice baked as that is a board that is on my horizon. I will check your channel for the twice baked review. Keep up the good quality youtube content and it will grow.

Thomye, I’m so glad I found your videos. I’m also from the OC and have been surfing on standard shortboards for over 30 years. But at 50 years old, I’m now finding it frustrating to catch waves and keep the flow through the typical HB and Bolsa Chica mush. Lately I’ve turned to riding a longboard on average days, but I really want to be on a shortboard. So, from your research and experience, which of your super-grovelers do you like the best? Do you go higher volume on your grovelers than your standard shortboards? Thank you for any wisdom you can impart.

Jeff get a Chilli Mid Strength or Chilli Middy. I have the 6'8 Mid Strength and it paddles amazing and turns almost as easily as my regular 5'9 CI RocketWide. Amazing board. The perfect bigger board for us older middle aged shortboarders that need more paddle but still want to hit the lip and lay something on rail. This board has had minimal coverage and honestly there is some secret sauce in it.

Excited to see the Mashup review (it was my vote). Did you ever do a review for the Seaside? I know Seaside isn't new and shiny, but still seems to be a perennial favorite of everyday surfers everywhere and I bet you have some footage. I think the Seaside and the Evo are the only two older models from Firewire to be re-released in Helium tech so that gives you an idea of how popular they are. I just got an Evo recently and it is my new favorite board for everyday waves. Would love to see an Evo review as it is kind of an outlier in surfboard design, but probably a lot more public interest for new boards like the Mashup.

@Craig Phillips Completely agree. I was amazed when I first got a Seaside. It really made your average sessions just way more fun, wave count went up and at the same time it really turns and delivers on speed when necessary. Super fun

no, on the seaside. I can't use my old footage because they frame rate gets all weird when I download them. I will likely need to reshoot but I have other boards in line. :( I have not forgotten about it, just the timing is bad. especially now with my normal 9to5 getting busy.

We’re always buying, selling trading, etc. trying to get all of our hands on the board’s that we all think will best perform in our conditions here in FL. sounds like an awesome crew. I have a few friends who do the same thing. Funny but one only does it with lost and channel island boards. Another with surf prescription boards. I mostly do firewire but after my CI dabbling, I am going to venture out. Yeah, its funny too because my surfing keeps changing so my preference changes, which is why I love surfing. Keeps me interested. Between equipment, waves types, locations, and my own style, there is so much, too much to work on. Also the delicate balance of wives. Luckily, my wife is pretty awesome about it. I did this from the very beginning so she knew it was in my DNA. :)

I'm having a hard time deciding on which one to get. I ride a 5'7 seaside 85% of time. Looking to replace my 5'6 seaside that I rode when it was bigger and the 5'8 looked to be obvious choice. Now others have said to get one size bigger but the 5'9 is more volume than my daily and is so freaking thick. Love your channel btw, your reviews and footage are excellent and much needed!

that was my dilemma as well. I ride a 5'3 Seaside which is 28.2L. my normal break is softer so the 5'3 is actually much bigger than my normal board. That realization made it much easier. The 5'5 mashup is 28.7, more than my daily. My thought was, the 5'3 Seaside and the 5'5 Mashup would be the same board essentially but in different ways. Although the seaside is less Liters, it is wider so a much better groveler. And, if you think about it, the tip of the nose any any board really doesn't help with paddle or catching waves. so, the 2 inches and the .5L makes no difference. It is narrower so it will likely be thicker. Anyways, going back to my Seaside, I should be on a 5'2 so, given that bit of info, I decided to go with the 5'4. My ultimate goal isn't to replace my Seaside, rather to compliment it. I want more performance less grovel. So, I want smaller less liters. What is your ultimate goal with a new board.

@Craig Phillips congrats. i am still waiting on mine. it was supposed to be delivered Monday but it was a no show. Tuesday, no show again but it said wrong address which is BS. then today, no show again and it stated delivery attempted, which is also BS, i have a cam and there was no driver in sight. Then i got BS email saying they didn't have an apartment number. I don't have an apartment number so I know the driver is BS. this has been a terrible experience and now i'm just stressed out. :( so close and set so far.

I was on a 5'3 Seaside which was a tad more than 28L. I went with this one because I want to get a tad more performance and I lost weight which i haven't put back on. I'm at abot 138 to 140 lbs (62.5 kg) right now. All my boards feel a tad too big for me right now. :(

​@@ThomyeSurfs That's a bummer Thomye if you have all those boards and they are too big volume wise now... I feel ya on it being hard to put on weight, I'm constantly eating myself to get those few extra pounds of pure muscle hehe, in the end it's not a bad problem to have as many would be sinking a lot easier after not watching their diet and surfing light-footed is also what you want if you are looking for that "Machado" style. What I learned from Noel Salas and has worked for me to calculate ideal volume is to take your weight in lbs and divide by 6. This gives you your ideal number for volume and add a few liters if you feel like you need that extra float. at 140 lbs you'd be looking at 23.3 liters, so definitely at the bottom range of the boards for optimum performance. Although, I have a Pyzel Gremlin which comes in at 29 liters and at 150-155lbs it has been working great for me in 1-4 feet and even better days with punchy 5+ waves. It has taken me by surprise as I thought that I should be cutting down the liters to progress and as my DFR shortboard is 25.8 liters and I love it when the waves get good.

I thought it was the other way. his Sesaide is 5'7 and the Mashup is 5'9. I could be wrong, I haven't seen all the videos on it yet. Personally, I am going from a 5'3 Seaside to 5'4 Mashup. mostly because I lost a little weight and i want it for more performance, when waves are better. I still have the seaside so I didn't want the exact same liters.

The decision was based on which boards I thought would sell for the most money so that I can continue making videos. I will likely have to sell 3 boards in the end. I might change my mind in the end but I do have to decide on getting rid of TB or Sunday, possibly both. It is a tad sad but I have to get my channel to either pay for itself or make a little money somehow. My buddy thinks I should sell merch. Will figure something out.

@@ThePokersurfer hahah. I hear ya. the funny thing for me is that even when I do find it, over time, my style or something changes where my preference leads me away from the magic stick. The Dominator was that board for me. After surfing it a while (years), I liked the potatonator better, then the gofish to seaside and now longer boards again. A big factor for me was weight, I was 175lbs and the volume to height didn't work for normal boards. which led me to shorter, wider, thicker. Now that I have consistently in the 140's, a normal longer board is feeling better. That, I think I'm finally realizing that different boards work better on different days and my mood and performance factors in. But definitely, some board enhance performance while other hinder it. I should but a rating which somehow measures that. Like a +1 or -.5
