Steve you hit the nail on the head! Fortunately I haven't lost that amount of cash, but I have lost a few dollars US. Dealing with Chinese vendors or even US vendors that are crooked, will cause you to lose a lot of money and frustration. Find and deal only with reputable, honest vendors. It will definitely cost you more for product and/or services, but in the end it will be worth it. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.

I usually only use bang good rather than Ali express as there service is much better
@l.k.10113 жыл бұрын
Agree to that. I had some issues with banggood orders (product flaw, not arriving items and so on), BUT the customer service always was on point, fast response and always a positive solution (money back etc.).

In every case of discussion, open a dispute. You can always close it, which keeps you in the driving seat in stead of waiting 2 weeks and not be able to dispute anymore.

It used to be that the Chinese markets sold with free shipping. That has changed drastically and now you really need to consider the purchase before placing the order. I recently purchased a Plasma Cutter. It came, it works, I am ok with it, but the shipping and import costs meant I could have gotten a better unit far faster through Amazon. Buyer beware. Now I check eBay, Amazon, Aliexpress and Banggood to compare price and expected shipping times. 3 months from China to Canada is ridiculous, and that sadly is the majority of the shipping times. I enjoyed your video and your insight, thank you Steve! Already subscribed, but thumbs up again! Hello from Canada!

Thanks for the video Steve. Oh how right you are. Gone through it for years. It is not only China, it can happen with ANY thing you buy; with the exception of a very few honest merchants. Unlike you kind Sir, I fight them to the "nth" degree. I win some and I lose some, but they KNOW they have one that will use any thing I can, to stop their chacanary. In the case of PayPal, I will say they WILL get your money back. Another great one is "eBay". For whatever it's worth. Thanks again Steve. You will always be a cut above. You are one of my favorites on KZbin.

Thanks Steve I can fully understand the point you are making regarding consumer protection. Having said that I have purchased a few items for the workshop from Banggood and so far, very good. What I really resent is paying top price for a 'Branded' product to discover that it fact it is a poor quality Chinese product in disguise. Or worse still a poorly designed and thrown together British or European product that needs hours of fettling before use. It seems that no matter where products originate 'you pays your money and takes your chance'. Anyway at the moment its seems that buying anything for the workshop is difficult as 'out of stock' is the order of the day.
@markkoons74883 жыл бұрын
My experience is very much the same. In part, the solution has been to search English language KZbin reviews like yours and those presented by Hooked On Wood. I've had no disappointments since doing that. Here in the US eBay is also a good way to buy Chinese goods particularly is they're sold through Taiwan or Hong Kong. Beware, though, of "identical" items priced just a bit lower. Often those are rejects or seconds that are useless.

We been caught a couple of times and now always buy from the UK, even from Ebay and Amazon we always check the vendor and where the item is being dispatched from. Purely because we're fed up with 20% fantastic and 80% Sketchy stuff. Great tips and Video Steve thanks.

The 7 or 8 bits I've got from Banggood have all been spot on but as always, pay with a credit card or Paypal, getting your money back is very simple.

Not wishing to defend aliexpress, but whilst their individual manufacturers can be very hit or miss with their delivery, if something doesn't turn up, or isn't up to scratch (fortunately that last hasn't happened to me yet) I go straight to the Aliexpress site and start the dispute mechanism there. Never had a problem and it's never taken more that a day to sort out. This doesn't mean the number of items that never turn up isn't a pain in the proverbial, it is, but cheap prices v service, a balancing act

Thanks for your video, I find it very interesting as you and majority of those who commented below must be extremely efficient in planning your projects. I have dealt with both Ali-express and Bang good, first shipping time , some cases up-to 60 days delivery and if any delays they ask you to wait another 45 days SO " PUT A DISPUTE" knowing that they will blame me first "LIKE OUR AUSTRALIAN TELSTRA" then after 45 days they ask you check with your post office then at least with Ali express the supplier decides not to answer for a while AS I DO NOT LIKE TO BE TAKEN FOR AN IDIOT in all cases I have finally received the fresh goods or re-fund... Annoying part is they advertise goods that are not available... then I noticed over the past say30 months the prices have escalated to very much to Australian prices thus WHY WAIT 45 TO 60 DAYS DELIVERY. I purchased some 5 months ago 2 50 Watt LED garage lights, arrived in just over the promised time ...I needed further 3 units arrived practically wrapped in a piece of paper and 1 of the lights damaged after numerous complains and sending photos and videos...direct and to Ali Express I received a refund BE AWARE THERE LATEST TRICKS, they advertise free shipping then when you start picking goods you go to check-up previously free shipping became $126.00???? when I quarried typical arrogance the item is large that is why shipping is expansive remember I have bought the same goods twice earlier FREE SHIPPING ... As per one of the people in your comments referred to the Dutch gentleman HOOK ON WOOD remember he is commissioned to lustre the goods plus goods are free to him. I have wrote to him re shipping he replied in Netherlands they receive goods in 5 to 7 days INCORRECT,,,,,,, well what we learned from this if we ignore lengthy time , Inaccuracy, taking chances of the goods delivery time THEN IS UP TO YOU, as for me I managed to locate and separate some of the suppliers from the suspicious ones but delivery for me 60 days is a joke. FINALLY I must admit that BANG GOOD service and reliability is well better then suppliers of Ali-Express admittedly Bang Good has a storage warehouse in Melbourne Australia so at least 505 of goods i get are normally within 5 to7 days...Good Luck Jack Marashlian

You make some excellent points and it is certainly a case of buyer beware. I think a lot of comes down to we get a little bit lazy here where we have good consumer protection laws. We expect things to arrive on time, work well and we expect to be protected. You need a different attitude if you are dealing with overseas suppliers. You need to expect problems, learn the rules and play the game. Use a credit card, put in a claim as soon as you are able to and don't haggle with people over faulty goods, simply claim it never arrived, it's much easier that way. I have bought a lot of products direct from China, some great, most OK, some terrible and some never arrived. I have not (yet) been scammed though. You seem like a decent chap, rogues take advantage of that.

I buy from Banggood, AliExpress and Wish all the time. Always for smaller goods. And I have never not gotten my product. Most of the time you get your product and your money back too. If you are in doubt, just open a dispute immediately. And try not to buy bigger items (or even expensive items).
@SteveMaskery3 жыл бұрын
Why would you get your product AND your money back? That doesn't make sense. ???
@HoutmeyersP3 жыл бұрын
All the downsides you discribed are not just China related....it could happen when products are send even from the end of your own street (by manner of speech). But like i see it buying in China you dont get ripped off by companies over in Europe that also buy or let theire goods be manufactured in China and then ask a double or triple price for those goods because an expensive brandname is printed on to them. I bought a Dremel rotary tool (120euro)......after 2 year (offcourse right out of warranty) the thing malfunctioned To make it work again i had to buy parts that had to be shipped total cost 65 euro. Instead of doing that i bought 2 Hilda rotary tool machines (with double the power that the dremel had ) from banggood , each machine at 27 euro and lots of accesoiries shipped to my door. One is still in the packaging because the other is still going strong after 3 year. Now who has ripped me off you think?? It was not a Chinese vendor.
@SteveMaskery3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure you have grasped my point. Sure you can get ripped off just down the road, but then you have the benefit of well-developed consumer protection law. You don't get any of that on these platforms.
@HoutmeyersP3 жыл бұрын
@@SteveMaskery The well- developed consumer protection law you probably still have in your country doesnt mean very much over here in Belgium....been there,done that. Surely you could run to court if you have a problem with a vendor...but few people do that for the smaller cheap products they buy. Most take their losses and be done with it. Untill now i had no problems buying from Banggood or Aliexpress...the day i do iget ripped off i allready saved a lot of money buying cheap in China.....a loss or two , i am still the winner.

Cheers Steve. agree with you in part but still believe that for certain, low cost items the risk is worth it. How was the tongue and groove cutter setr? I've got a load of doors to make (MDF for what it matters) and consider this to be a safer approach than using the table saw as I would normally have done. Are we going to get a discussion on intellectual property and the underhand approach to what amounts as stealing it for a far more "westernised" platform owners own gains anytime soon. ;)

I only buy Veiko tools from Banggood. I started buying them when we ran a furniture business (now retired) and we needed several of everything. At Woodpecker prices, they were…..unaffordable. So, we bought 1 rule. It came and we compared to Woodpecker. Absolutely (in woodworking terms) accurate. So, we bought a couple of squares. Again, perfect for us. We eventually got maybe 20 Veiko tools. And they never disappointed. Would I buy router bits from China? Absolutely not. I value my body parts too much to take that risk. I detest the Chinese government and all that it does. However, it would be extremely naive to suggest that by buying “British” or buying “USA” or whatever, that I’m getting them made in those countries. Even if buy something from Woodpecker, so proudly stating made in the USA, I’d ask where where the CNC machines being used made; where was the aluminium forged; what make of cars were the workers driving; where were the TVs that the workers watch made? In other words, it’s extremely complex and naive to believe that, if you are buying “British” or whatever, you product is wholly British. Chinese manufacturers will make anything to any quality level. I was reliably told by someone from one of the importers that the spindle sander, being sold looking exactly the same under many badges, can be different for any brand. They may look the same from the plastic moulding, but the various buyers will ask for this quality of bearing or that quality of motor. It all makes it a minefield for woodworkers and I fear, one with little hope for beginners to navigate .

Couple of notes on your “worst case” issues. No matter where you order from, if you are from the UK/EU you are always legally protected by the Distance Selling Act, which gives you 21 days to return a product. If Ali refused after 14 days, they are acting illegally and you can raise legal action - just the threat of it should be enough to get them to comply. Also, with a lot of these small tools, it’s worth checking Amazon before AliExpress or Banggood as a lot of vendors sell through Amazon as well with comparable prices

No it's not. You cannot blame the vendor just because he happens to live in the same country from which the virus (probably) originated. That's like blaming me for the cosequences of Brexit.
