Pieter, I appreciate your intense inspections of your customer’s vehicles. It appears your customers are being well served having you professionally inspect and service their expensive vehicles. However, mechanical items wear and need continuous servicing and maintenance ..... and like the old cliche, “you can pay me a little now, or a whole lot more later” ..... in any event, thanks for posting your videos and continued success!

Yeah, I don’t know about that, Peter. That seems like decent condition to me. When I bought my 1998 4Runner with 320,000 miles for $1800, every one of those things had to be done. It is a given. It also needed new shocks, springs, struts, head gaskets, all kinds of bushings, and many other things. HOWEVER, I keep a very detailed price list for my parts, and I could NOT have bought a nicer 4Runner for the money I’ve put into it. If you do the work yourself, you can save a truck like this for very little money, and make it a reliable rig.

Why I call her $ pit. Lol lastly EFI relay and the fuel pump relay. Both causes it to randomly stall. Was a pain. Bk yard mech and saved prob $4 k in labor. Shes a daily driver.

I just performed a similar service on a 2004 4Runner with the 4.7 liter engine. Timing belt service was performed, but spark plugs, valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals were leaking oil. Then all the power steering and transmission cooler lines were also hemorrhaging fluid and I also changed the Ujoints. All fluids were changed, but still needs new struts and shocks and upper control arms (bushings and ball joints). It’s a Toyota and it was one owner vehicle. It will run for many years to come.

When I shopped for a used car, I rejected so many of them because they were asking top dollar but the cars needed thousands of dollars in work. The sellers didn't mind and would not negotiate because there were plenty of people willing to pay top dollar for Toyota and I'm sure that they are going to get unpleasant surprises. I also found a lot of people selling their bad condition Toyotas after they've only owned it for a year. Good for me that I ran the VIN numbers through multiple services to determine what was going on. Let's hope this lady didn't pay top dollar. One consolation is that all the repairs are for her benefit. She will get the better breaking she will get the better transmission shifting, she will get the better gas mileage, etc...

Fortunately most of this can be done yourself with the timing belt being the most intensive. The DIY'er could see if the MAF cleans up but besides this you can do it yourself for around $300. This is to be expected when buying anything that old.
@billsimpson6043 жыл бұрын
If it were mine, I would do the brakes, then the camshaft belt next. That belt snaps, and you will be stranded. Who knows how long it has been in there. The oil seeps can wait a while. Depending on the road, being stranded can be life threatening. Around here, we have some unlit 2 lane roads with huge ditches on the sides, which prevent you getting completely off the roadway. (Five feet of yearly rainfall, combined with flat terrain, means you need a lot of ditches, canals, and pipelines to get rid of the rainwater.) Some drunk could come along and hit you, especially at night. Last year I came upon traffic at a complete stop on one of those narrow roads. Turns out that one of the lanes was blocked by a 7 foot long alligator. Fortunately, some young guys decided to stop, and were directing traffic, letting one lane at a time go, hence the traffic slowdown. Never try to play traffic cop, especially in the age of smart phone users. These guys decided to play alligator savior AFTER the traffic had backed up for blocks, so they couldn't get run over by someone checking their phone. The gator was crossing Military Road, just north of Interstate 10 in Slidell, Louisiana. I nearly hit a man walking along that road one night. He was wearing all dark clothing, with nothing reflective on him. Had I been driving near the right side of the pavement, the big mirror on the Expedition may have hit him. People don't appreciate how fast 50 miles an hour is. Police and construction workers wear those reflective garments for good reason.

But this is just maintenance. It’s like engine oil change or refueling. Should it be discussed before buying and discussing the price because of just maintenance? Do people discuss pricing depending on how much gas is in tank? Personally I just replace everything after buying a car, no matter what seller said. Especially timing belt. Also, what about body to frame mounting points? These bushes are a maintenance item in 3rd gen 4Runner. And. The most critical - lower ball joints???
@chocolate_squiggle3 жыл бұрын
You sound like someone that can do his own maintenance which is great. For someone that doesn't have a clue, the hours, parts and fluids all add up for these basic small jobs and to have to pay a shop to do them all at once is going to result in quite a large bill. That's not exactly what someone expects when they think of 'periodic maintenance'... to be hit with a a bill in the thousands 2 weeks after buying the thing. Absolutely I would avoid a car this far behind in maintenance unless it was somewhat factored into the purchase price.
