My daughter is still driving our 2003 4-Runner with 378,000 miles today, I’m a mechanic so maintenance was and still is the key to longevity to this bulletproof vehicle and engine. Thanks Toyota for the quality engineering that went into this vehicle.

Good to know. My 03 with 190k still runs good & the interior is still nice. Especially with the free dash board replacement recall. I have no urge to get a new truck, simply because I like the body style of the 03 with the extreme fender cladding.

Using my dads 95 corolla, the whole dashboard stopped working, but I saw the timing belt replacement sticker and it said 280k miles - that was done 8 years ago. Engine still feels smooth, only problem is sometimes you have to re-engage to reverse cause sometimes the gears don't bite or something. Toyota are my number one choice, unless I can get my hands on a diesel mitsubishi/isuzu.

@@costaet I change according to local conditions, like here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winters can drop down to -40, summers can be hot and humid. Add in short trips under 10 minutes. Every 3 months is wise, especially if your car has GDI. With highway driving like a road trip, 6,000 miles is no problem

Though frankly I can't believe how huge and porky they're getting. At this rate it will end up on the Hertzprung-Russell Diagram before long.

My friend has a 2011 4Runner limited 4x4. It just crossed 100k miles or 160km ,she just recently changed spark plugs and coils. Oil changes get done every 3 months, diff and transfer case oil changes are done once year and transmission fluid gets changed every 2 years. She’s a Mechanical/Electrical engineer and does the work herself. This 4Runner will outlive anything.

I'm planning on replacing my '97 4Runner in the near future. It has over 403k miles on now. It has by far been the most reliable vehicle I've ever own. I was wondering how the new 4 Runners are and it looks like it will be a continuation of another long term ownership with a new one. I will retire in the near fuature and I still like traveling around the Western Region of the US. My current 4 Runner has taken me up and down the West Coast and across to Utah and Colorado and up into Wyoming many times. It has never let me down.

Reliable is an understatement! I bought a 2006 Toyota 4Runner V8 Sport Edition new. It currently has 46,000 original miles! I drove it in New Jersey and Pennsylvania for 2 years, weekends only. I shipped it to Costa Rica 8 years ago with rocky and dirt roads, where I now live. Other than oil changes, I have only had to replace batteries, tires and front brake pads. However, recently fog lights, windshield washer and sunroof stopped working. All-in-All, this vehicle still gets my from A to B, at a very low maintenance cost!

Toyotas are easy to DIY maintain, including major jobs. i have done engine swaps, timing, suspension, tranny flush.... on our 4.0 4runner and 5.7 tundra. This video is very insightful. I see the similarities across the 1GRFE and 3URFE with regard to cooling and VVTi. My advice, always use original Toyota parts, especially when doing critical components.

I had a 1995 4runner 22re manual and it was the most fun and reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Couldn't get out of its own way while merging onto a highway but just dealt with it because it was such a rare bird. Had a blizzard here in NY with 3 feet of snow and this truck just clawed its way through unplowed streets leaving a trail of full size pickups in its wake. Hard to believe but true. After 12 years of great service sold it for a forester and now regret not buying a 4runner. You just solidified my choice of trading it in for a new 4runner. Thank you for such a great informative lesson on this engine.

As if I could be more pleased and obsessed with my 2018 TRD Off-Road Premium. Already I’ve put 61,000 entirely trouble-free miles on it, including LOTS of off-roading in UT, CO, AZ, NV, etc. Shooting for 400,000 fun, memorable miles... 💪🏼 Thanks for the excellent, well-researched video!

I got 1 year and 23 kmiles on my 2012 4r sr5, completely stock. It's been flawless, but I don't think it ever had 2ndary air injection. I use 4hi and 4lo with atrac regularly in the winter, getting up steep and difficult forest roads I never thought I could do with michelin defenders. I work the 4r hard and had expected some breakdowns but so far not a single thing. I did all maintenance at 135 kmiles and extensive rustproofing as the previous owner was a little neglectful. It's been a real blessing and thank you with all the great information and advice that you provide.

Always loved my 4Runner. Unfortunately I had to get rid of it due to frame rust. If I would have bought it new, I would have had it under coated. Unfortunately I was inexperienced when I bought it and didn’t check underneath of it well enough. I would advise anyone in the rust belt to check out the frame before purchasing any older used Tacoma or 4Runner. Great vehicles, but the frames are definitely a major weak spot. That’s why I ended up buying an 08 Tacoma that had the frame replaced 2 years ago.

‘17 ORP here. 67k mi and not one, I mean not a single issue with anything. I’ve never owned such a reliable vehicle. I do all of the maintenance myself and they are easy to work ok…the hardest thing so far (and not too hard) has been changing the spark plugs on the driver side. And thanks for explaining the true reason that the oil canister was lowered to that ‘crappy’ location. It’s not the easiest but once done a few times it’s not that bad. What do you think about the Fumoto quick-drain valves for the oil pan? I put one in a few months ago and like it (I have skid-plates so I’m not concerned about it being sheered-off). Thanks again for this great series! I look forward to the next few installments! Stay safe!
