Until recently it wasn’t exactly ‘Mass graves.’ It was basically just for people who hadn’t been claimed by a family, roughly 25 people every week. Now that the number has been rapidly increasing, they’re burying a lot more people, and they’re burying many of them in the same holes, which is why they’re “mass graves.” The dead are no longer receiving gravestones, but they are still being placed into coffins with their names marked on them just in case the graves ever need to be retrieved. It’s not quite as bad as the mass graves with piles of unmarked bodies.

This is a bit sad because the catacombs in Paris were built in I think the 1700s because the cemeteries were getting too full and it was affecting the water supply. So the city built an underground tunnel system. The bones were used to support the walls and the workers made some very beautiful art using the bones. There is poetry written on the walls as you walk through. It is an incredibly respectful way to honor these people who have not been named. This place is not haunted, it's not scary, it is just peaceful and a place of respect.

We're still dealing with it, and our numbers are on the rise again because of Covid-D19.

There's actually a lot of truth to the whole "routing the tube around plague pits" but its mostly because London is essentially one giant burial ground. It's a super common problem with laying deep foundations in London, in that bone is difficult to dig through. One of the biggest problems with carving the tunnels for the London underground is that they'd frequently hit areas dense with bone and would struggle drilling through it. So they avoided making tube paths through areas they knew to have been graves sites and would go around them, rather than waste time trying to dig straight through and risk damaging equipment. Also a bit of concern about digging through plague pits and accidentally "releasing" the plague again, but it was mostly just to avoid the bones!

The Black Plague is still around actually. There were a few cases of it in the USA and other places. Thing is, it's not really lethal anymore. Thanks to modern medicine nobody has died from it. You could get the Black Plague tomorrow and you'd be fine. It would suck but you'd live.
