I think it might be a cultural thing depending on the culture. I'm Korean and I've never tried it that way until my Cuban friend served it with salt at a bbq. And again a Puerto Rican friends mom served it for us to snack on. And again when I was working in a restaurant and the guys who happened to be Mexican and Cuban served it that way for the waitresses to snack on. Salt absorbs the water and amplifies the sugar taste. Science.
