Russian Empire was very much influenced by French culture after the Napoleon wars, and I believe it was the time a lot of culinary and language traditions were involved into the Russian nobelty. I’m not sure how presicely it happened that Napoleon and olivier’s salad got all of a sudden ussr’s most New Years dish, but I’m pretty sure nobody wanted to offend France as a country :)

It's not a potato salad. It's like calling a Caesar salad a potato salad. It contains: potato, carrots, peas, pickeled cucumbers, boiled eggs, more or less mayonese (personally I like it with less), ham and chicken breasts. In Italy they sometimes put olives instead of pickles and instead of ham and chicken they put tuna. My kids love it.

Why is fussing about food about culture? It's funny when people react. There's a reason "people eating really hot things" is a whole range of videos. Also Americans eating American foods from the 70s. These guys tried everything fairly, hated some things openly and with others, were incredibly complimentary, even though they went in with skepticism. Not really. We find Russian food vial here and our food is famous for being bland and gross so that's saying a lot. You dont travel the world seeing Russian fast food chains in thousands of locations per country nor do you see high end Russian eateries all over the world, in fact you have to go out of your way to find one in London where there are many Russian oligarchs hiding their families from Putins mafia state.

russian salad dishes are how east asians( japan, china, taiwan, korea) picture what real salad is like - lots of diced root vegetables + boiled eggs + diced ham+ mayonaisse. that's kind of salads asian bakery make for western sandwiches in east asia. leaves based salad dishes from europe or america are rather new introduction to east asia in the past two to three decades. before, it was always russian style salad....

Also, depending on the region of Russia you will have some regional specialties like beshbarmak or stroganina that not all Russians know

Согласна! Но возможно им досталась плохо приготовленная рыба. Я заметила, что в супермаркетах и столовых часто готовят селёдку не так вкусно, как у нас дома. Мы в салат кладём яблоки после слоя рыбы, лука и картошки, а вот в магазинных салатах я яблок как-то ни разу не встречала... So I've been watching a lot of "Americans try..." videos lately and here are a few things I noticed about Americans (this does not apply to everybody but is just based on what I've seen in these kind of videos): 1.they like food with a lot of sugar in it 2.they seem to not really like fish (sushi is an exception), or meats that are not pig, cow or chicken 3.they like cheese, but not all of them, more like, cheese flavoured stuff and one of those melting kind 4.they are very picky about vegetables, what kind and how they are prepared 5.they don't like stuff that's dry or too bready (has a lot of bread in it?) 6.very judgemental of how the food looks/is presented on a plate (this one is honestly the only one that bothers me because alot of them miss out on the experience of trying new food because they are too focused on how it looks) -tbh i don't think any of these are negative things, except no.6, but it does help us foreigners understand better what tipe of food Americans like and don't like.... very fascinating

I'm not Russian, but I ate most of these foods growing up. Mainly because my grandparents attended a senior day center that had a lot of Russians that attended.Summer breaks, winter breaks, spring break, etc. from school I would go with them.The elderly Russian ladies also taught me how to master Rummikub. И ещё он сказал солёные огурцы 😳 ( pickles), что там за «повар» был?? Зависит от эстетики. От одного вида этих салатов стошнило бы. А как сделаны бутерброды? Наляпали масла и кинули ложку икры. Если красиво подать, то даже один вид «приглушит» некоторые недостатки. У меня «шуба» , каждая прослойка видна, и режешь как торт. А там, вы правы месиво. Я бы тоже не стала есть такое!
