Abannati honestly I don’t know how much I agree but I get where you are coming from. I believe people have grown up around people sugar coating everything and holding back from the truth, so when people choose to be honest they are immediately offended and decide the person is a btch. However making an unnecessary comment that is designed to lower someone’s self esteem and really hurt them is mean and not acceptable. For instance if someone says ‘do you think I look really good in this outfit?’ and they don’t, I say no, as I believe I’m helping them pick a nicer outfit. However they are so used to a sugar coated world that this offends them, yet they asked. Being mean would be saying something along the lines of ‘no because you are ugly/look ugly and you look terrible and like everyone will think you’re ugly’. I don’t think there is actually a fine line, I think it depends on the person, and how used to living in a sugar coated world they are.

There's a difference between being honest/straightforward and being too blunt/rude. One is great and trustworthy, and the other is annoying and inconsiderate. Rather than choosing between "too nice to say the truth" and "too harsh when saying the truth," just find a happy middle ground. You CAN be honest without being insensitive.

That's like saying to a black person, "I'm gonna call you a n***er, because it's just a word, it's what you are, and it's your issue if you're offended about it." People who take no responsibility for the way they affect others definitely fall into the "rude, insensitive, and inconsiderate" category. Larry Camarillo I think they can be blended together. Sometimes, when I’m just saying what’s on my mind, I come off as rude because I’m very blunt. If your shirt is ugly, I’ll point it out. The problem is that it's mostly a matter of perspective. Somebody who is more sensitive and easily hurt or already doesn't like you for whatever reason, is always going to feel like you are being rude - while others like your friends will love your for your honesty and straightforwardness.

Lesley May My mom was driving me, my brother, my sister, and my sister's boyfriend the other day and my sister was sitting in the middle between them, but the seat belt wouldn't work. My mom wasn't gonna stop to let her fix it so I said, "Well that's fine, as long as not stopping the car for 5 minuets is worth risking your daughters life." My mom scoffed, rolled her eyes, and pulled to the side of the road until my sister buckled in. She yelled at me, saying she hated how blunt I always am. So I said,"Well you'll hate me less when we get in an accident and you see your daughter still alive and strapped in safely." So yes I'm am blunt and brutally so, but what if I hadn't been? What if we had been in an accident and with the help of my mothers refusal to stop the car, my sisters broken seat belt caused her death? My mother would never forgive herself, and our family would have to morn the loss of a very important person to us. So I will stay as I am, and even if people hate me for it, I will protect them with my honesty by saying the things that should be said but most refuse to say. Honesty for the win!

My best friend is straightforward, but still cares about my opinion. She always tells me that I need to have my own opinion, don't just go along with others. Generally, I enjoy being laid back and going with the flow, I ways say "I don't mind, what ever is more convenient for you" But it became a bit of a habit where I'd just be to lazy to give my piece of mind, even in important situations. But my friend has certainly taught me the importance of speaking my mind and has helped me draw out of my shell and try harder, even by a little bit. I really loved this because she was blunt, but she wasn't mean. A lot of people mistake bluntness with meanness. Telling your friend that your other friend is cheating on them isn't mean. It's the right thing to do. Telling someone that they're stupid or that their haircut is is ugly is mean. It also depends on how close you are to someone. If it's a stranger, just no. If it's a close friend, then yes. Generally speaking.
