Dear Mr Hillbilly, mi name is Nacho and I´m from Argentina. I´ve been to the BVI twice, invited by a friend. Now because of a promise once recovered from a bad COVID, I´m heading with my girl, her kids and two couples May´23. Your video was a delight of memories, and a huge help!!! Thanks for taking time and effort you obviously put into it. I hope to see out there!

My wife, son and I chartered a small 32 ft monohull and did this in 2019. First night at Norman Island was amazing and stopped at Indians to snorkel. Next we sailed over to Cooper Island and "tried" to pickup a mooring ball there and we accidentally got the ball wrapped around our prop! Word of advice if you miss the mooring ball pickup and are in the process of going over the ball/line put the engine in neutral don't leave it in gear which is how we failed. Anyway we had to get a diver to go down and untangle. We were very lucky no damage to boat or line. Learned a huge lesson though. After that night we went to Marina Cay, Guana Cay, Jost Van Dyke for 2 days and finally back around to Peter Island without any further problems. Would love to go back one day and see Anegada.

My wife and I and two other couples will be going to the BVI (first time except for a couple of cruise ship visits) in March or April 2023 with MarineMax Vacations aboard an Aquila 44. I'm excited. It will be my first time on a catamaran. My previous "big" boats were a Nordhavn 55, and a North Pacific 49, both trawlers. Seeing the world at 7 knots. My first "big" trip was a 63-day, 24/7 with only 4 stops for crew changes. My crews were all friends. I had a training captain for the first leg from Dana Point, CA to Miami, FL via the Panama Canal. But enough about me. Congrats on your getting your body on track for a longer, and more importantly more worth living, life. After semi-retiring from a business my wife and I still own, I went back to paramedic school and I can tell you endless stories, mostly sad, about people who were just "too young to die" and whose families I had to console sitting in their living room with dear old dad lying dead on the floor. Actually, I needed to shed some pounds and I'm 25 pounds down and 10 to go. I'm now anxious to see all your videos. My hope is that my next boat will be an Aquila 44. Actually an Aquila 54 but that's just a bit too pricey. My Nordhavn was going to be a 47 until my wife saw the 55. We own a lot in Windmill Harbour on Hilton Head. Perhaps we'll see you sometime since you will be "just down the street". Again, congratulations on your life change. Ciao.

Great overview, and as it may have been noted elsewhere, the BVI is where the whole concept of bareboating was born. We took 3 other couples for my 6th trip 2 yrs back on a Moorings 45 sail cat and had a spectacular time. Again I agree with the counter clockwise route especially for a sailing agenda it ( normally) provides the best wind angles. The run coming back from Anegada is a highlight! This trip we spent our last evening at anchor in Peter Islands little harbor tied stern to the mangroves in 5' of water along with a 100' super yacht. All smiles.

Love this itinerary as it reminds me of all the places my family and I would go back in the 60"s. The only thing is being a 64 year old woman now, I was little disappointed by not seeing any "older" people in the crowds. Everyone looked like a teenager or in their early 20's! I hope seniors frequent the places you featured as well.

Feel like would be a great chance for myself to learn all the ins and outs before I venture on my own. I recently retired and look to do more of this in the coming years! I did want to know if you have any other itinerary ideas besides the one you have posted here. Marine Max also shared one and its similar to yours but like you mentioned you are going counter clockwise to what they are suggesting. In any event all the stops you have posted are right up our alley! Just looking for any updated ideas for stops for our adventure. I also plan on going to the Miami boat show to learn more about the Aquila Power Cats. Again love all the videos! Jim

Fab sailing suggestions. I especially appreciate your outlook (attitude). On a dynamic yachting vacation with good company the mission is all about having fun and enjoying life. Your itinerary is a bit aggressive, but certainly doable in a power cat. If you prefer sailing the WX will be more of a factor with respect to time and crew comfort. I like to spend 2 nights in Anegada just for the local seafood. Those trees at the Big Bamboo are actually Sea Grape trees. The “Big Bamboo” is in fact a humorous reference to a male’s large sexual organ. It is a local joke of course. Great video and thank you Cap!

Hope you see this in time. We are headed to the BVI in 2 days. I’m debating where to go after Anegada. More specifically, would we have time to hit Trellis Bay then snorkel Guana and end up moored for the night on the back of Jost near Foxy’s Taboo? As an alternative, we can hit Cane Garden Bay instead. FYI, we are sailing so not quite as fast. Thanks!
@thewanderinghillbilly3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I'm leaving in 4 days!!! That's a little too ambitious for sailing, I'd say. I mean you can do it but you won't be able to spend that much time at either location. Depending on your preference, I'd leave Anegada very early and go straight to Guana. Cane Garden is possible from there....remembering the days aren't as long in the winter, so not sure how much time you would have to stay there. Have fun and be safe!!!!

@thewanderinghillbilly4 жыл бұрын
hey Ken, first, Happy New Year! and Good Riddance to 2020! lol. I don't actually have a "license". I took 3 US Power Boating courses...BASIC POWER BOATING....NIGHT OPERATIONS...INSHORE POWERBOATING OPERATIONS. These courses can be found with most powerboating companies who are certified to provide these courses. Taking the BASIC boating and the INSHORE boating will qualify you to charter at Moorings or Marine Max. They just want to know that you have had actual training "behind the wheel", so to speak. Hope that helps.

We are two couples and although my friend and I have many years, hours running our own boats, it has been limited to South East Florida and Bahamas. So as you can imaging, the Wives are somewhat nervous about both my friend & I navigating the BVIs. I Wrote down to the T, your counterclockwise itinerary for us to follow. We will greatly appreciated if you can offer any insight, or maybe, if you saved it, your trip GPS coordinates w/tracks. Hi, just stumbled upon your channel last night. Excellent info. What would be a couple tweaks you might make if a guy was looking for a bit less partying and a couple quieter spots to replace the party spots?
@thewanderinghillbilly3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for viewing and the good word. All of the locations I pointed out can be "quiet" as well. The only really loud place at night will be Norman Island...because of Willy T. A lot of folks stay at Anegada 2 days. It has 3 really amazing beaches and there's no night life to speak of...except maybe a local DJ at Potter's restaurant. The Dog Islands, that I mentioned, are a combo of 4 islands that can be explored individually...take your time there. Marina Cay, which I barely touched on, is a very low key spot to grab a mooring ball and relax. There's no night life there, just a nice little restaurant. I would say the same about Guana Island. I also didn't mention Cane Garden Bay. It was wiped out by the hurricane but I hear it's back and it has a few restaurants but no real night life. And a very nice beach. Hope that helps and thanks for viewing. Please SUBSCRIBE to my channel...

Hi Alan! How did you get comfortable captaining your charter? My boating experience is with a 24 foot boat on a lake. The prospect of “showing up and renting” a boat to hop around BVI concerns me. What do you recommend I do to prepare for renting a boat and following your suggested 7-day itinerary?

Paul, I've chartered here 11 times previously, as well as many other places around the world (Serendipity Travel). The most dangerous aspect of chartering in the BVI is other 'captains'. Because it's quite easy to sail here, you'll find a lot of boozing, untrained amateurs on autopilot. One has to be more wary of them than reefs! If you're a conscientious sailor on your lake, you're probably more qualified than half those chartering here, as no license is required. If you want a little more prep, hire a local instructor to help you with aspects you may not use normally, such as picking up a mooring ball. I also believe online instructional videos, or just a good sailing book, can be helpful. Another option most charter cos. offer is to hire a skipper for the first day to help familiarize you with the yacht and operations. This will greatly put you at ease. Good luck!

Hi Alan! Great videos! I'm going to begin taking sailing courses. Which ASA courses would you recommend so I can qualify to charter my own catamaran?

Little dix Bay is a gorgeous resort. Beautiful beach. Leasing a boat with a crew costs about $20,000. Can one join a group?

Stying in Anegada two nights is not a bad thing. Reach out to Kelly’s Land and Sea tours for a 1/2 day snorkeling the reef. You will not be disappointed. My wife requests this every time

Was on a flotilla in 2019. We are on our fourth attempt to get back there at the end of the month on our own family charter. They haven't cancelled flights on us yet! I like the itinerary. The tough part on the last trip was the wind on the way to Anagada. Any kind of heavy wind can make it a bumpy ride. Some of the crew did not fair so well on the close reach and the swells. Worth every bit of it though.

Do you have a 5 day itinerary video?
@thewanderinghillbilly3 жыл бұрын
No I'm sorry I don't. However, any of these islands can be reached within an hour or so...the only exception would be Anegada. It would be hard to get out there and back on a 5 day trip. You would have to eliminate a few favorite spots to do that. Thanks for watching my channel!

As a native of the BVI, very well done. My only correction would be the pronunciation of Saba Rock (Say-Ba) That's how we say it.
