While it seems a bit to limiting for full-scale projects, I can see Core being a very good prototyping tool for all kinds of games. Nice video.

Well they don't officially say it's a game engine, it's more like you're making mods and maps for a game, so it's essentially like gmod, they even use lua as in gmod. You won't make any games that you can sell and you can't put "I made maps in core" onto your resume if you want to find a job in that area.
@Aspharon4 жыл бұрын
"Core is basically Roblox" was not a sentence I was expecting to read today, but it somehow makes sense

@@_lod Keep in mind that Roblox has been out for 14 years and Core not even one.

@Peter Lustig "oh great the next wave of game devs that have no clue what they are doing. sheeple.. if your not willing to learn programming maybe sell cars not games.. mediocre people wherever you look lol.." My god I don't think I have ever read something that dense from a programmer, and that's saying stuff knowing how toxic dev communities are to newer less knowledgeable people. Core isn't meant to be some top of the line engine that you could make professional games in, some people just want to create a game so their friends and families can have fun and they do not have the time, patience, energy to sink into learning something more sophisticated. Stop acting like an elitist.

holy moly? how do you keep up this pace? i know lumbermill is your main focus but understand why you need to generate some revenue on the side - and thanks core for recognising how good this guy is - you've struck gold here! I'm also loving how you promote and encourage others to get building games. what an inspiration and what a leader. how's this impacted lumbermill and when's my next fix on that series?

Don't know if this was a sponsored video but if it is, it's one of the best ones I've ever seen. Despite being a short one, I also learned a lot from this video, especially that I've been trying to prematurely optimize stuff when making games. Even if you're an experienced programmer like me, unless you really know what you're doing, don't over-engineer or over-analyze things, just grab a tool and make stuff!

looks amazing and you made it look so easy!! Guess it is if you know WTF your doing... I have OCD and Huntington's Disease! and I'm trying to make my own game now getting out of the old Indie style crap games made from RPG Makers! I want something I can actually easily!! and implement a variety of interacting people, objects, and develop an easy to use simple crafting of armor, axes, bows, throwing shards etc. with a player inventory display, and on screen item boxes with items currently equip. Killing and skinning animals in a survival based game and building simple huts, and camp fires to rest. Just some ideas I had and would love to be able to learn quick enough on a simple to use platform to design all this, and actually finish it.

just start building anything. I recommend rebuilding old games or simplifications of other games you like. this will give you experience in building games but also give you a chance to understand how these games work behind the scenes and inderstand why they are fun. continuing to put your own twist of the gameplay trying to make it more unique and fun is a good way to try to get more into design. if you want to go indie just continue like that focussing on all 3 disciplines, art, design, and programming. if you want to try to get a job in the industry at a company you should start specializing in one of the disciplines. for design keep building small prototypes of games, you can use primitives and free assets and simple scripts (designers need to be able to script at least their own prototypes). for art start building scenes you can walk through, you can find character controllers online and just start making assets in blender or maya, composition in the engine also teaches you environment art. for programming just continue writing games you already know or try some of those features you thought of in your brain. program them yourself and maybe try to do more advanced things like networking or your own rendering effects. also features like game saving or even game state saving are good to work on. ofc pathfinding and ai as well.
@Glyn-Leine4 жыл бұрын
as a designer it's also important to keep playing lots and lots of games, especially bad ones, or good ones that made no money. and understanding why they were bad or didn't make money. but ofc understanding why other games are good is also important. for art go on art station and have a look around for inspiration. for programming: find youtube channels like sebastian lague and bennybox and thinmatrix and threeblueonebrown and join some of their discord servers. there are always fellow programmers willing to help learning people
