The beginnings of religious pieces are always insanely good, just like Requiem Aeternam from Mozart is, or the Kyrie Eleison from K.427, or the opening from the Matheus Passion.

PointyTailofSatan It is indeed so beautiful, I am listening to it as I write out this comment and I can almost imagine it as a young girl frolicking through an open field while the sun sets, she harbours not a worry in the world and sings with the energy of a heart content with nothing but praise, joyful and sincere appreciation for the sacrifice of her lord. I imagine the counterpoint of the flute as birds or other objects of God’s creation which join in with her, mimicking and developing her song of praise in the most intellectual and mature way with such complicated yet such simple and beautiful contrapuntal juxtaposition. Music like this can cleanse souls.

I was lucky to perform this piece (St John) under the direction of Kurt Mazur and members of the New York Phil chamber/concerto artists. Period instruments. Heidi Grant Murphy was the soprano soloist. At the conclusion of her Ich Folge, she said to Maestro, “I messed up a note or two in the middle…” his response: “you sing so beautifully I don’t care..” As a young chorister, one of the most amazing moments of my career.

+romarinthym You are welcome romarinthym. Both St.John and St.Matthew passions are two completely contrasting works. St. John, however, is much more fast paced and gives up more thorough detail than St. Matthew. If asked which I favored more, I would not be able to answer. They are both beautiful in their own manner.
@riverstun
@riverstun 7 жыл бұрын
Indeed a difficult choice. I think the Matthew is more consistent, but a little too florid for my taste. The John is deliciously austere - especially the opening - but doesn't have the overall wealth of good stuff that the Matthew has. Imagine if he had combined the two.. :) Thanks for doing these Geru.
@javierruiz-alonso6941
@javierruiz-alonso6941 7 жыл бұрын
St John is as full of good stuff as St Matthew. From a formal, structural point of view, it could be argued that the latter takes it an extra mile in terms of squeezing the orchestral & vocal resources: 2 choirs, 2 orchestras etc. However talking strictly in terms of musical quality, it´s impossible to choose one over the other as the two are just immortal works.
@Nikioko
@Nikioko 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Matthews Passion concentrates on the suffering of Christ while John's Passion focusses on the necessity of the crucification as a fulfillment of the script to release mankind from their sins. Thus, John's Passion is the more "Lutheran" one. However, Simon Peter's denial of Jesus and the earthquake upon his death have been taken from the Matthew Gospel, so they must have been very important for Bach that he put them into his John's Passion.

Correction: two. But Mozart died when he was just getting started. Moreover, a 1793-1798 passion by Mozart would easily eclipse anything by Bach due to orchestral forces Mozart would have at his disposal. . Saluti e complimenti.

Great video! I am wondering, how did you manage to make this recording sound at A=440? all Gardiner's recordings I know of this are at 415.

Is it just me or are the last two quavers in the Continuo at 17:22 wrong? I'm pretty sure the orchestra plays G and F instead of E and D... Doesn't matter though. Great video! I've watched it countless times and still enjoy it. Great job!
