She was the best opera singer in the world, even then when she was getting on a bit 😊 Freddie wrote this for both voices and made a MASTERPIECE. They were both going to sing it at the 1992 Olympics, but Freddie died in 91...

Montserrat Caballè was a world class soprano opera singer who sadly passed away a few years ago. Opera was Freddie's passion and he made an album with Montserrat who was born in Barcelona, Spain. The song was a hit in the mid 80s. Freddie passed away in 1991 but a recording of the performance was part of the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. The song was re-released and was an even bigger hit 2nd time round. I've always loved it ❤ Freddie was a musical genius.

You can really see their relationship in their performances, they truly adored one another. This song in particular, if I’m remembering correctly, Freddie wrote about the first time they met.

I remember this back in 92. Hearing Freddie's voice so loud and powerful a few after he died. This was the song of the summer! And now even more poignant now Montserrat has gone too. Brilliant song by two of the best voices.

If you go see the Fountains of Montjuic in Barcelona where this was preformed, they have a display of the Fountains changing colour and turning on and off to music, ending with this song and fireworks. It's pretty cool.

Montserrat (you really did one of the better jobs pronouncing her name) died in 2018 and was one of the great opera divas. She is known as La Superba and Freddie was once quoted as saying, "I love music and she is the music". Loved your description of 'magical', by the way.

This is taken from Freddie's last ever performance on stage. At this point in time, Queen had stopped playing live due to Freddie's illness. "Barcelona" is an awesome song, and Freddie's voice worked so well with Montserrat's, showing what a truly great singer he was. I never fail to get goosebumps as this song reaches it's conclusion. It's very powerful stuff. Thank you for reacting to this, it's so appreciated.

Difficult to remember that this piece is actually 37 years old now, yet every bit as stirring and monumental as when first performed. An unlikely pairing it is true, between perhaps the great rock singer of the age and for many, one of the greatest Operatic "Diva's"(I use the term in it's purest sense) of all time. Yet, the chemistry, the magic between them is undeniable and the result is an immortal "anthem". It is quite true what Freddie once said to "Montsy"..."Music has No Age....!". Thank God for the technology that allows this masterpiece to still be enjoyed, acclaimed, long after each of these amazing performers have sadly passed away...."VIVA BARCELONA" !!!

The Olympics were in 1992. They knew Freddie wasn't going to be around then. You pronounced Montserrats name very well. Her friends call me her "Monsie." She and Freddie loved each ou ther. Montserrat was VERY FAMOUS! She sang with all the big opera names. Freddie heard her on a ccx record and she e Had to meet her. He wrote all the songs they sang together. It was quite a meeting. I'm sure you have watched it on youtube. I love have watched all their performances many many times and I still get goosebumps. Excellent! Thank you for posting this. I adore anything Freddie did.

Love their dynamic. Montsy & Freddie both look at each other with such affection in their expressions. Don't yell at me, but I actually prefer Freddie's BARCELONA album to his Mr. Bad Guy album. In my humble opinion, I think he produced better quality song lyrics in it than in the other solo project.

This song was made in 1987, when Barcelona was designated as next Olympics for 1992. Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballet sang it together. It was meant for him to si g it together in the Olympic open ceremony in 1992, but Freddy couldn't make it. Montserrat is an opera singer and a true institution in the field. It was Freddy who approached her to do this since Freddy loved opera (seeing those vibes from Bohemian Rhapsody).

"One of the foremost opera singers of the second half of the 20th century, Ms. Caballé was an enduring, vibrant international presence, appearing at the Metropolitan Opera, with which she sang 98 times; Covent Garden; La Scala, and elsewhere, as well as at the opening ceremony of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. " Featured here is her historic performance of Barcelona with Freddie Mercury. This was shot live in 1988, celebrating when the city of Barcelona was granted the honor of hosting the 1992 Olympic Games, hence the confusion with the dates. www.nytimes.com/2018/10/06/obituaries/montserrat-caballe-dead.html

To answer your question “how popular is that lady?” I’m a student of Bel Canto (opera singing) and everyone including my teacher refers to Maria Callas as the “Queen of Sopranos” HOWEVER my teacher refers to Montserrat Caballe as the “Champagne of Sopranos” Her voice had a silk elegance to it in the entire range, and her breath capacity and control is the envy of female and male singers alike. As a male tenor I still study her breath technique. In opera its one thing to have a big booming voice, but to color it in a way that is silk and legato (tied together) and fundamentally beautiful; in that category Montserrat rules that category from beyond her grave Buon Anima (rest her soul) You can also look at it like this: If you and a thousand other singers who received the exact same training and are all accomplished, and are singing the same song with the same notes, all doing it exceptionally well... ask yourself how do I color my voice to make it even more beautiful? That’s what Montserrat did, she made her delivery even more beautiful, it was already beautiful and other Sopranos performed it with great beauty, but Montserrat still managed to exceed even herself. She’s my favorite Soprano of all time

In fact you've been one of the best pronouncers for Montserrat Caballé I've seen tonight (should sound like cah-bah-YEAH)... She was one of the best opera sopranos of all times. Freddy was fan of her as he loved opera... so the co-operation was inevitable... this song was intended to be the Barcelona'92 Olympic Games' anthem...but Freddie died in 91, so it couldn't be performed live at the opening ceremony... only the video was played :(

Montserrat Caballé adored Freddie. She said he opened a new world to her. As an opera singer she’d never been involved in writing songs but Freddie changed that. She talked about it in Alfie Boe’s documentary Freddie Mercury Saved My Life. Boe was a student at the Royal Opera House, penniless and sleeping in a park, when he got a job to record some Queen songs. The documentary is Boe digging into why his technically perfect renditions sound like garbage when compared to Freddie letting rip.

You got the pronunciation of her name fairly spot on. Sadly all of their 'live' performances were lip synced. All of their songs were recorded with the instruments being a synthesiser, this was only sorted a few years back with the vocals being put to proper instrument backing. The reworked version does sound a lot better. This is a good place to start though.

Nah... Freddie never left the band... I am assuming you got this misinformation from the less than accurate film “Bohemian Rhapsody”. It frustrates me that despite Freddie having successful solo albums unlike other members of the band who also took time to do their own thing .. the film seemed to imply something else! The film also said he told the band about his illness before live aid .... complete rubbish ... he wasn’t diagnosed until 1987 ie two years AFTER live aid. Anyway just thought you might like to have those facts and if you listen to any of Miami’s interviews (manager in later years) he said Freddie was the peacemaker or motivator for keeping the more emotionally intense other band members on track. Don’t get me wrong not knocking anyone in the band ... just saying what many Queen fans feel about the film.

Freddie never left the band. He recorded music that he couldn't record with Queen. Most of the other members of Queen did solo projects before Freddie. He recorded some more dance tunes, because with Queen as a rock band, their fans didn't like dance music. And he recorded this classical album with Montserrat Caballe, again it was not something you would really combine with rock. This album was actually quite successful, it has sold over 4 million copies.
