I was saddened when I heard of Alphonse's passing. And as I listen to this great tune, I am even more saddened. Alphonse and I go way back to the fifties. We grew up four streets apart. His mother (Mrs. Emma), got my mother a job as a cook with her at the military college (The Citadel) of Charleston, SC. We both were drummers in the Bonds-Wilson High School band. Alphonse was a great teacher. He always pushed us to play better. He even bought difficult drum books and worked with us on playing them. Alphonse tuned my snare drum and gave me lessons. Every year we would audition for the All-State Band at South Carolina State College. Alphonse always made a perfect score (4) every year. Rest in peace my brother. And may your music soothe all in the hereafter just as it did, and continues to do, in this life. Peace. Odom Boy

I am a Charleston native also/city boy. I discovered "The Man Incognito" album when I was in summer school at Auburn University in 1976. I dj'd at the college station WEGJ and they would us play ANYTHING we wanted - no programming ! Alphonse took the time write me back after i mailed a letter to Blue Note records ! I still trying to find it !!! I thought I placed in one of my Mouzon album covers. Another great from Charleston was Beau Ray Fleming (also deceased) who helped developed Mandrill in the early 70's. Never got the chance to meet either but love them like I've known them all my life. My other musical giant was George Duke (whom I met in 1978 at the Atlanta Kool jazz festival). ab

Thank you American friend ! (a french drummer and teacher , i am played with Rhoda Scott ( jazz organist , and fusion music , studio ...and other artists) Alphonse was a great drummer !
There are very few pieces of music that are PERFECTION, this is one of them, in its way as good as anything Mozart or Bach composed, timeless and innovative !

I shall always remember watching Poul Anderson dance to this at 100 Club, Oxford Street. Talk about dance and artistic genius! I couldn't dance to save my life at the time -- but as I stood there mesmerized by Poul's moves and the expressiveness and originality of them ... I swore that one day ... one day, I'll be as good as or better than him. It took me three years, practising and dancing every single day! I don't know if I became better than him, but hell! I knew I'd arrived! I was good -- even Greg Edwards called me up on stage at The Royalty to award me as the dancer there that night. He gave me Kleeer "Keep Your Body Working" and Light of the World (can't quite remember if this is what the other record was). I was a little nervous 'cos I was good-looking, the girls (who in those days queued up to date me) said so -- and I thought Greg (who "liked" guys) might wanna make a play ... Oh no! That would've wrecked my night and the award. Poul, thanks mate! You were special; you inspired many, many -- you terrified (in a way) with your ability and your almost god-like presence. But, I became no longer scared to "run you". Never had the chance though. Never saw you again, except briefly when you had that spot in a Camden eatery, soul/dance place, but I was passing by outside. Thank Poul!

Damn - another great passes on - He was a real powerhouse, and maybe a bit overlooked - Loved this LP in the 80s - seems a bit "smooth jazz" now, but still excellent! - Rest his soul
