I have the RWD one and almost 10k km covered. On a cold, wet and windy day I can get around 420km range driving purely motorways at 110 km/h. Drop into R roads and that increases by a good bit. Great car so far.

I am living in Malaysia and below is my first long distance trip with BYD Seal (RWD, Premium). Started from home at 7:00am with 100% battery level. Reached Ipoh (220km travelled) with 61% and reached Kamunting toll (286km travelled) with 50% battery level remaining. Had lunch in Taiping and stopped at Petronas Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah (Ipoh) with 32% battery level remaining (383km travelled). Quick top up 29% (32% to 61%) and reached home with 23% battery level remaining (total 599km travelled). Calculation 1: 50% get 286km, so 100% should get 572km. Calculation 2: 68% get 383km, so 100% should get 563km. Calculation 3. 100% + 29% - 23% = 106% get 599km, so 100% should get 565km. Driving condition: ACC setting at 110km/h Air cond setting at 23c Only driver in car (1 person only). I am happy that it is very close to the claimed WLTP cycle of 570km.
@TomKrysiak7 ай бұрын
On a long range model with just local trips we get pretty close to the actual 570km range. Motorway mileage varies heavily depending on how heavy footed you are. Overall, very happy with the performance!

Hi Derek........love the videos. The WLTP fpr that model is 520kms. There are two settings for the "guessometer"........standard (WLTP and count down) and dynamic (which calculates range on current driving style) It might be worth checking what your setting is/was at.

That’s a great range in the Seal. Can I ask about your charging set up in Dun Laoghaire, Derek? It looks like no driveways.

520km is the WLTP range of the car which is shown in the "Standard" range setting. If choose the "Dynamic" range setting will get a more realistic estimate of the predicted range of the car based on past driving. Will still show higher than the ~450km you got but much closer than the 70km difference.
@johnmcmahon4407 ай бұрын
I have a Seal RWD also (which I love; it really is a fantastic car). As above re dynamic vs standard (std just uses the wltp figure). Not exactly sure what dynamic uses for its calculations (for example it could be the entire average ‘history’ so far, or last 1,000km or…) but it’s going to be more accurate than the std wltp figure.

Great coast to coast Derek and have missed seeing Darwin the last few trips. These coast to coasts are getting easier with improved range on newer cars, I think you might have consider a change to north to south along the Wild Atlantic Way with a stop over in Belmullet that would be more of a challenge. Now we would love to see you do it in the Citroen Ami that is definitely a real challenge. 😃
@PaulMeier-cu3ds7 ай бұрын
Coast to coast is such a useful review format and few other journalists are bothering. More please. The fact that the first part of the leg was interrupted by an accident is precisely the sort of real world experience we all need to know about. Also the (nice looking) dog and the need to stop is real world, at least for me. I think the heroic attempt to see how far you can go on a single charge misses the point. Unless you are the sort of person who lets your ICE get down to the red light or worse, many of us fill up more frequently and that works perfectly well for an EV. What is especially useful is to know what real consumption looks like and whether we are likely to be anywhere near where we can recharge. I have to point out in my ICE days somebody else paid for petrol and so I did not care about efficiency, merely about speed. I am only thinking now about range and efficiency because I am uncertain about the public charging network. When the network is sorted I expected to worry more about speed than efficiency and range again, especially as I do most of my charging at home from renewables.

I have the Premium ( RWD ) and driven around 7500 km here in Thailand. Very happy with the car, a real pleasure to drive. I did a 205 km mainly highway drive recently, at between 100 to 110 kph the guessometer dropped by 250 km range from its dynamic range of 655 km, on the return journey I hit heavy stop go traffic and the 205 actual km dropped the range by only 189 km. So a good indicator how ( recreated ) urban driving range is much better range than highway driving. Obviously driving styles differ greatly from person to person but my total average is 13.8 kWh/100 km which gives me an estimated range of around 580/590 km. Note: the RWD has a higher range than AWD. RWD for range AWD for performance.
@06younger7 ай бұрын
Your range calculator is more than likely based on the CLTC standard.........in Ireland ours will be calculating on the WLTP standard. Your modlel on WLTP has an estimated range of 570kms. (I think it's 700kms using CLTC standard)

So, you can't get the forecast range, missing by about 10 to 15% by the look of it. No matter the manufacturer, ev's never seem to get the estimated range. I just chop off 20% from the estimated range and allow 1 hr extra travel time (for charging stops) for every 300 km. This factors in dud and occupied chargers - a really big issue in Europe.

Tesla with their sat nav does give it correct in fairness. What I should have done here is use the BYD one instead of Waze to see if it calculated it right.

@NevoEVReviewIreland 😀 Once that dog hair gets under the seat fabric and carpet (not a problem on leather or vinyl seats, it's almost impossible to get it out. Our first Nissan Leaf was so badly affected by the dog hair. It's the short thousands of terrier hairs that's the problem. The Seal is not my type of EV. I prefer a small hatchback, really like the look of the upcoming Kia EV3! Sorry, BYD fans. We already have the EV6 but the EV3 looks perfect to replace our Nissan Leaf!

If you factor in the weight differences between BYD Seal (heavier) and Tesla Model 3 (lighter), then the efficiency would be almost the same. This is similar to in ICE cars, Japanese cars are more "fuel efficient" than that of continental cars. This does not mean Japanese ICE car engines are more efficient than that of continental. We need to define the word "efficiency" better in order to give a better perspective.
