Shane, This or the Rythmik F18? I don’t need built-in DSP or an app-just looking for two subs to replace my old Sunfires. My usage is a 50/50 split between music (2-channel, 5.1 music, and concerts) and movies. I’m guessing the sound profiles of the two are pretty similar? I do like all the new tech and specs of the SB17, but I’m more curious if it actually translates to better sound and performance, or if it’s just a marketing angle. Cheers!

@@failingup4907 I'd probably stick with a ported subwoofer, I don't remember the dimensions of Shane's room but 25 feet for your longest dimension is going to mean you'll get less room gain with a sealed subwoofer in order to bridge the gap over the ported one. Also what you define as a room isn't what bass will. If there isn't a door then it's part of the room in terms of pressurization. I'll link SVS's article in a second comment about room gain for you to read and hopefully it doesn't get flagged as spam.

While SVS isn't always the value king for subwoofers you can buy on the Internet they most certainly are for subwoofers you can buy from major retailers like best buy, Amazon or crutchfield. I think for me if i were upgrading I'd go for HSU's new flagship subwoofer as i really like the footprint it has despite being ported. Kinda a less extreme SVS PC series. I don't really have a good room for a sealed subwoofer but I'm sure that things slaps.

Sounds like I need to check out the new SVS 17 inch subs. As good as they're getting, I still like my 24's better. Just like you probably like your 21 better :). There's nothing like huge bottom end that they can provide. In fact I'll be building a 4,000 watt 24 inch home theater sub in my next video. I just left my review of these subs at SVS. I have two of the existing SVS Ultra PB16s and after adding two more SVS Ultra PB17s I can say it is a game changer. The biggest difference is the tightness and midtones I was missing from my PB16s. I can now stop saying I don't need subs for stereo music. Music has never sounded this good using the PB17 subs along with my two PB16 subs. I used REW to find the best locations for all four subs. Then Dirac Live with Bass Controll to make it perfect. The bass drum now sounds like a bass drum should. If I want only music without the subs my SVS Ultra Pinnacles get the job done. I really was convicted adding subs would improve them but I was wrong. I had the wrong subs. Oh, and for movies, WOW!!!!! Great review!
@mikeberndt181
@mikeberndt181 18 күн бұрын
Could you elaborate more? I have a the sb 16 ultra and 2 others and have 2 others and have used REW to make the best of my large room. For my placement and size my measurements are pretty good but I need the others to get there. My sb16ultra is at -23 and that’s with an emotiva amp at 275 ea/ for my fronts with prime pinnacles. My placement is so wrong that basically the mains and subs is technically in the middle of the of the room based on the way my room is made. I probably have the worst cast you can have. I’d love to know the difference between the 16 & 17. I know it won’t work miracles but wonder how as an owner you think the difference is
@xTremeSequences
@xTremeSequences 18 күн бұрын
@@mikeberndt181 It's a good question and one I would have struggled with had I not gotten them. My family room home theater is a challenge because it is open to the dinning room and kitchen in a recktangle shape. (18'x30') My speakers are about 3.5 feet from the front wall. I have eight 17'x17" bass soffits from Gik Acoustics as well las treatment on my ceiling and walls. I have my two new subs in the front corners next to the soffits and about 8" from the side walls facing each other. Would I love to have them facing me? Sure but they sound best where they are. I can still see them but not beside my mains or between them. This is good for my SVS Ultra Pinnacle to have breathing room since they each have four 8" subwoofers. My older SVS PB16s are placed where it sounded best. The left SVS PB16 is directly behind the left theater seat about four feat from my central listening position facing right. The other is to my right at the wall between a love seat and a single chair facing left, or toward the MLP. The PB16 behind me is -24. The PB15 on the right side is -22. Both from SVS PB17s are at 8. Togethe the measurements are awesome after what Dirac Live with Bass Control does. I have three profiles I listen to: 2-Channel where the mains and center are crossed over as low as they will go, 42hz for the mains and center for Auro-3D and movies if I want less bass, and finally mains and center crossed at 90hz to maximize the subs. If I continue to treat my room it will give me more flexibility but at some point you need to watch a move and stop chasing the elusive perfect sound.

The final scene where Cooper is falling into the black hole has the most brutal bass from the whole movie. IMAX subwoofers were not up to the task to deliver cleanly. 10 years anniversary was a disappointment in this regard.

@@pulDag I Highly doubt IMAX Subs couldn't it.. As a Retired IMAX Projectionist. I can tell u if it did sound that way. Then their is No IMAX projectionist their. They are using Theater staff to run the projectors. Like most IMAX theaters are and they go in and change the settings to their liking. The theater i was working at uses Reg. staff and it sound like Sh!t in their. I was so Disappointed that when i went into the booth to check the settings. And Yup, All changed. Unbelieveable because trust me their speakers can handle anything u throw at them...

Ever since setting up a DBA at my home with a MiniDSP, I can’t go back. Now, I just need to replace the so-so pro music subs I have with real HT subs. My room is wide enough that I need a 3/3 DBA. I’m having to decide on building my own with stereo integrity 24’s or SVS 17’s. Decisions decisions.

Great review as always Shane. I'm conflicted about not using room correction though, I understand your philosophy, I just think RC actually evens the playing field and lessens your specific room issues on the units you review. It would also give us an idea how well the subs take to EQ.

Love SVS. Very first sub was a pb1000. Great sub for the money. Have their elevation speakers and a bunch of their cables. Almost got the PB16 a few years abo but went with a jtr rs1. Rs1 I think can dig deeper and probably more spl. But svs is cheaper and way better tech. Would be a good comparison, though.

I don’t get this review, it seems you really want that 10hz bass which is different from a normal user. I think you should review it as a normal user. I have two sb16 and it’s more than enough for our room. Also I have never found SVS subs boomy, but again that could be room acoustics, but that complaint usually comes from people who use ported klipsch / cheaper subs that have a mid bass response elevated.

I don't believe you. Im sure the subs sound just as good as any other brand around there price point. My experience with the SB 3000'S were HORRIBLE and I got rid of them less than 45 days. THE SB16'S are waaay better than the SB 3000'S. The question I think a lot of people want to know is the upgrade from the 16's to the 17's really worth it? Or is it better to spen that money on another Brand.

also. by not using physical disks. your audio is way more compressed. digital movie audio can’t compete with physical media. you’re losing out big time on audio. stop being lazy and put in your disks.

Dude, I want you to please check out this track on youtube. Mater P how you do that there" kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWKno6WBms5nh9E I have some old school M&K MX-150's three of them as a .1 configuration and two M&K S100B's in my living room that is wood floor above a basement and the way this song hits in the lows is so fun to listen too. I know it's ultra gangster but it's totally sweet. I can feel the bass pretty good with 6 12's doing push pull at low wattage but with your' setup is should be feeling like your' in a low rider!!!. It's not boosted bass bullshit it's the original song so it ain't that double bass make your house shake cheater shit. but I always start low and get into it.
