The only thing I can say is that all the industry needs to take a very close look at what Marantz is doing. They’re listening, and they also are delivering. Two things most brands fail at one or the other or even both (looking at you Rotel). Bravo Marantz. And I probably would still go with Stereo 70 vs Cinema70, but that’s just me. It feels like a damn good and versatile product. Great video and conversation as usual! Hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday and happy Veterans Day, thank you to all those who served and serve still.

Thanks! "Back in the day" I believe technically a "receiver" had a tuner built in vs an integrated amp but I assume today having built in streaming qualifies, especially with the ability to stream radio from all over the world. I'm totally with you on the added flexibility of the receiver/speaker combo vs wireless speaker systems, especially when that "wireless" still involves running power cables to each speaker. Keep the 2-channel stuff coming LOL!

Does the Stereo70, when streaming a film in 5.1, automatically downmix to two channel when used in a 2.1 setup via the HDMI connection (or does the TV’s digital output have to be switched to 2 channel pcm)? If a service such as Netflix allows you to switch from surround to 2 channel, I’ve noticed the sound is better than when the TV performs the downmix.

Great review! I have the exact combination of a Marantz 70s and Lumina 2s for my bedroom setup. I have it connected to my Ps5 going into my LG C2. For my sub, I have the Rel tzero connected. All I can say is wow! This is the quintessential setup for parents who want to enjoy a good movie, play a game, or listen to music in their room after their kids go to bed. In my main room I have a Marantz 7015 with B&Ws and a 15 inch Rythmik sub. You can guess how many times I've been able to use that system since my toddler and infant came into my life. I love it but we can never use it to it's full potential. Having this Marantz 70s has given me an opportunity to enjoy my music like I once did. The lumina 2s are a perfect pairing and even my wife has now become an audiophile because of how fun it is to listen to music again. However!! I will say I took a serious pause before purchasing the Marantz 70s since the day before Amazon had the Cinema 70 for $999, a dollar cheaper than the stereo 70. Luckily I waited a day and the price went back to normal the next day making my decision easier. But with both units being the same price, it really gave me pause considering I wanted the cinema room correction. It really is a miss that the stereo 70 doesn't have basic correction. I'm sure Amazon will discount the cinema 70 again for the holidays so be aware. For me and my use, I don't want the surround so stereo 70 was the right choice. One last thing, Kristi is correct in that people will compare this to a soundbar. I considered this against the Samsung 900 series and while I appreciate the flexibility of the soundbar, you just can't compare the sound quality of the Marantz. I chose the Marantz for two reasons: hdmi connectivity (I find arc troublesome and didn't want to deal with it if I choose a soundbar) and the ability to choose better sounding speakers. Thanks again for your recommendations. You guys steered me to the lumina 2s and I'm grateful! Amazing speakers!

If you have more than one thing to plug into active speakers, then I'd easily go the marantz way. I also like that they went 2 channel for us that prefer that over multiple speakers (been there and went back to 2 channel). Also great review, thanks for testing a bit more "odd" products (odd as in a 2ch receiver)! :)

Love the review as always. Two differentiators are that the stereo 70s employs HDAM’s where the cinema 70 does not. Also if having 2 pairs of stereo speakers and A/B-ing them is important, again the stereo 70s will allow this while the cinema70 will not

Andrew, you need to tell these OEMs to put room correction in 2 channel products, even if it's just Audessey. That's why I would go with the Cinema 70s over the Stereo 70s. Even the most basic room correction will set your sub distance for you, including DSP delay. Also with the Audessey app you can limit the correction to 500 hz if you choose. IMO, room correction is the number 1 reason to go with an AVR over a 2 channel integrated.

What made the NR1200 amazing is that you get a music stereo amplifier that works with HDMI ARC and has bass and treble controls. Every other brand misses the point. I don't want 10 speakers in my house and I don't want two amps (one for my TV and one for my record player). Not to mention having to go inside a menu to change the bass or treble. I mean how hard is it to put ARC and two knobs on a stereo amp?

Thank you for this review I got my Marantz 4 days ago and love it. It is such a nice-sounding warm amp and works well with my monitor audio bronze speakers. I am hearing things in my music that I haven't heard before. The only downside is that Heos app. This is why I just stick to my Eversolo DMP-A6 but everything else was very easy to set up.

After using a Marantz AV receiver Audyssey with room correction I can’t imagine going back to one without it, even in a two channel setup. The Stereo 70 might have lots of features and benefit from Denon-like interface but without room correction I doubt it’s worth the savings compared to the Cinema 70 or other Marantz “AV” receivers. Thanks for making sure that the fact that it doesn’t include room correction clear, but I think that it really needs more attention.

I love Kristi, but I definitely agree with you, Andrew. The Stereo 70 is going to be a problem even with speakers that might be hard to drive , as I'm not sure Kristi is giving much thought about how valuable people craving power appreciate active preouts. Add to that the HDMI inputs, and I feel that the only thing Marantz could have and still SHOULD do is make the Stereo 70 and Cinema70, a dual mono, fully discrete, fully balanced design. At which point you'd have a "Hometheater-phile" product, which I feel would leave a lot of companies scrambling and pulling their proverbial hair out. Then you could offer them some KEEPS products. 😅

Kristy said what was in my head the entire video, what would be the benefit over the cinema 70. Outside of power. If it was half the price or significantly less in cost, It would make more sense. Originally, I wanted this, because I was going with a 2-channel system in my living room using a NR1200 but because of the way living room is set up, the phantom center doesn’t work well. (Plus, my tower speaker sits in the Christmas tree spot) so I bought a passive soundbar speaker that’s under my tv. With the cinema 70 I can do 3.1 setup, and have everything that the stereo 70 has, put other options should I choose to go another route. I did consider the stereo 70 in my 2-channel room where I have my PS5 and Series X connected to my tv. I mostly listen to music but my McIntosh doesn’t have hdmi arc, but it does have HT bypass so the ST-70 could work there. In the end, bought a node with hdmi arc. The node has arc volume control via coaxial outs and cost less. As for the cinema 70 disrupting the powered speaker market. I’m not sure the size of the market. I know people with soundbars but no one with powered speakers. However, it’s not I know a lot of people. In any case, I always thought passive soundbars with receivers similar to the St-70 would be the dominant market due to flexibility with connections and central wiring. But I also thought the that Samsung tv’s one connect box would transition to all TV’s. Clearly, I know nothing about market design. I think Anthem is coming out with a home theater A/C that’s small and thin enough to hide behind a tv or cabinet. It’s only 5.1 but sounds interesting

Good discussion on the STEREO 70 vs CINEMA 70. I think one of the reasons people would buy a stereo over an multi-channel AVR is a mindset for some that they like the idea of a simpler front speakers without the mess of side or rear speakers. I'm one of those people. My upstairs living room is a 3.0 setup and for a long time I felt using my 5.1.2 AVR for this purpose were wasted channels. Then I remembered I could Bi-Amp and actually noticed a slight improvement coming from my speakers. In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't go stereo only and agree with Andrew you do need to consider whether you want more options or not in your setup when deciding between the STEREO 70 and the CINEMA 70.

Andrew, Love your video's! i'm in the market for a Cinema 70 or Stereo 70. I was wondering, what produces the best dound quality for music? Like.. initially i'm more interested in the Stereo, but maybe in the future a 5.1 setup will be there again, and yes, still open for the aditional amp. But what would be best for stereo music now? or would you think there is not much of a difference. Currently have BW707S2 speakers.

I have the Marantz Stereo 70s. The only differences I found are no HDAM modules on the Cinema 70s, the rear ports do not appear to be gold plated, and the power. The question remains, do the HDAM modules make the Marantz Stereo 70s sound better? I purchased my Marantz Stereo 70s refurbished for $599. The Cinema 70s is selling for $674 with the current 25% discount. I chose the Marantz Stereo 70s as I intend to use it as a stereo receiver, with no plans to add more speakers.

Of course we HAVE to totally agree with Kristi. In all seriousness, I don't feel that the majority of consumers walk into the store knowing the nuanced implications of going either of these routes down the road. They're often subject to trends and salesmanship (aka profit margins). Each setup will work well if you know what is important to you and choose wisely. Same reason why some people enjoy their integrateds while others their separates. Each to his/her own in the pursuit of the desired sound.

I feel like the Stereo 70s is more or less the new version of the Marantz NR1200. I've watched your review of the NR1200 and you didn't seem too thrilled about it. I wish you had brought it up in this video review to highlight the differences between the two. While I've no doubt the Stereo 70 is probably much better, the NR1200 is currently $399 on closeout everywhere so I picked one up for a modest bedroom setup I'm building with some Klipsch RP600m's. I'm not expecting to be blown away by any means but curious how this would have compared should I have chosen to save my pennies and gone with the Stereo 70. Great review as always guys and props to Christy for getting additional info to compare the Stereo 70s to the Model 40n :)

Thanks for this comment. I came here hoping to see just that comparison so you have saved me 20 minutes. I actually thought he quite liked the NR 1200, in fact I went out and bought one not long after. I am very satisfied, it is in fact a PM6006 pure audio amp with a video board piggybacked on to it and NOT a multimedia receiver amp being pressed into audio service. Therefore it is properly musical and the onboard DAC is excellent although I would say the MM phono pre-amp is not. On paper the Stereo 70 appears to offer no change. Where the 70 is different seems to be in the updated video/HDMI board (now offering 8K etc). The NR 1200 was listed at $690 at the time but often available for $590 which is what I paid. The Stereo 70 at $1000 is therefore not a compelling upgrade. Edit: Just want to add that although I haven't heard them together I think the RP600m should be an excellent choice. If you are familiar with the term "British sound" I find Klipsch have a very American sound. Its rich and deep but thanks to the horns quite forward and lively. They should liven up the slightly relaxed sounding Marantz.

Earlier this year I bought the KEF R3 initially for a stereo system connected to my TV, so I was looking into a stereo receiver with HDMI inputs, for which there are limited options out there. I saw some older models from Denon (DRA-800H) and Marantz (NR1200) and was not convinced until this new Marantz line came out. I jumped into the Cinema 70s because of the slim form factor and the advantage of having pre outs in case I needed more power. But then there was a discount on the Cinema 60, for just around 100 Eur more than the 70s. And that was it, I started my system with the R3 and the Cinema 60. Few weeks later I felt I was lacking on the movie/TV dialogues, no matter how great the "phantom" center produced by the R3 is and no matter how enhanced I was setting the dialogue option on the Marantz. Then I decided to get one of the last R2C center units while they were on sale. Then, my point is that what I initially considered turned out to be away from what I ended up getting. Happily I decided to get the Cinema 60 instead, so I have more flexibility. This Stereo 70s is a nice option with probably no competitors out there, but, be mindful of your future needs.

I don't usually turn on the Marantz, so I want it to be manually turned on by myself... It is connected to my Oppo BluRay player, a Google Chromecast and the Cable TV Box, all signaling to my LG Oled TV. The Chromecast, when turned on it also turns on the Marantz which I don't want. I had some settings working before but recently I changed things and messed with it. Now I don't know the proper settings combination. In the near future I will probably buy a small Sub, something like the SVS 3000 Micro, but first I want to do some room treatment. Andrew and Kristy thank you so much for your reviews. I have an old Denon 3802 RSV. I love how this thing sounds with all its power. I moved it out of my Media / Music room because it has no modern video media inputs. I am considering upgrading to the Cinema 70s because of your review. My late 1980s JBL towers which I love have a sensitivity of 91 at 6 ohms 1/5/8/12 inch. After your review, I want to use the Denon 3802 as an amp (Pre IN) to drive my JBL L7 front with its 100-watt per channel on all 7 amps. I love the sound of the JBL L7s, but they tend to get a little bright. I do drive these speakers at 65-75 DB at times on an inexpensive Costco Yamaha RSV at the moment. I would move the Yamaha to my computer room with the Bose 601 Series III speakers. My musical taste is all over the place, (Big Band, Pop, Soft Rock, Jazz Fusion, R&B, and some classical). I also use Schitts DAC and a headphone amp with HiFiMan headphones. Do you think this would be a good setup (Denon 3802 and Cenima 70S together).

This is a fantastic product. Had it for a few months. This is more of a killer to AV receivers than it is to powered speakers. Truly has EVERYTHING the good AV receivers has minus the surround amplification. More and more people are not investing in 5 to 11 speakers. This is the product that is long over do. I bought an outboard amp because my towers needed more power but if you have no interest in surround sound and are going to drive book shelves then stereo 70 is obvious choice. Cinema 70 power too low. It will work with movies at 50 watts but for music not enough unless you have really easy to drive speakers. Great review andrew! I was waiting to hear your opinion on this. Marantz has made excellent equipment going back to the Model 60, and later the 2270 stereo. The only surround receiver I've ever owned is the giant Marantz with 90 watts x 7 output. It's old, but my movies sound wonderful. I did move my center to an Emotiva 150 watts/channel for my giant front speakers. Sadly the future brought about a Cambridge receiver for my corner system. My main system has an Emotiva pre and Emotiva 125 watt amp. Marantz is too expensive for me now, but I never question the quality.

I see this Marantz as a product for a long term small apartment dweller where a jack of all trades receiver makes sense. Which is the definition of a niche market. But I think I side with Kristi on the premise. The lifestyle images of a clutter - less powered speaker setup is what helps the powered speaker sell. A traditional receiver form factor even if this Marantz breaks the mold with a gamut of connections does not inspire a more modern, clutter less lifestyle. Marantz would need to bombard the advertising channels with images that say otherwise in order for the Stereo 70s to torpedo the powered speaker market. Your review certainly opens up some eyes though and I greatly appreciate it. Enjoy your Sunday!

Do you think the benefits of better sound quality from a good stereo system, outweighs the surround sound benefits of say the Ambeo, HT-A9 or Q990C? Basically, which would you say is more important (at least in your opinion): sound quality or surround sound?
@andrewrobinsonreviews
@andrewrobinsonreviews Жыл бұрын
It all depends on what you're going for. Can a stereo system make for a good movie-going one? Yes, but it will never fully surround you nor maybe captivate you the way a surround sound system can when playing back a proper (or good) surround mix. I look at it this way, a good/great home theater setup can also be a good stereo system, whereas a stereo setup can never really be a home theater.

The Marantz will give you all those modern options in connectivity, plus a tad better digital section, but in terms of sound, I wouldn't expect it to be on par with a Rotel preamp of the last 6-7 years, for example the RC1572 or the more recent MkII. If its something from the '90s, then most probably you'll get better sound too, from the Marantz

To me, an owner of a set of Dynaudio active speakers (for my PC), there is a LONG way from a good set of active speakers, to a soundbar or some sad tiny Sonos thingies. I'm with Andrew here. The choice is between active speakers, and a setup using some sort of sound giver, and a set of speakers. Personally i've only considered the active Buchardts, the A500 i think they're called, for a main setup. Otherwise i'm always looking at seperate units, not in the least because of upgradebility, and convenience if something breaks. The one time i thought my Dynaudios were defective i started sweating. Borrowing a set of speakers or some amp, is a lot easier than having to build an entire system because you all in one goes away for repair.

In terms of the demographic buying something like this product; I think that this product would be welcomed by customers looking for a traditional stereo setup with two speakers and possibly with one sub, that is used to rigging up a USB DAC to their phones as an analog input to their current preamp/amp setup, which is also used in tandem with their CD player and possibly phono. Consolidating this into one unit as opposed to buying a streamer or even those with a streamer as a separate component from their preamp/amp set-up would benefit from consolidating components into one centralized unit that can do it all (in terms of what I just describe anyhow) minus MQA rendering. Of course this is strictly that demographic that is only looking for two channel stereo audio playback. Being that there are eight HDMI connections and having an Arc capable HDMI, this further adds to that demographic to those looking to have a centralized device with their living room setup with their TV in mind. I do not see this demographic already not having a couple speakers in mind already and an existing setup with multiple components working together already. Possibly someone looking into getting into this hobby that is being diligent in looking at all the options and coming to the conclusion in a similar fashion with consolidated components in terms of functionality and value. I'm sure there are plenty of demographics out there for this product but I am just thinking about the ones that would be marketed toward this product. I like the fact that Marantz's engineers have stayed true to that warm sound they are known for without compromising their quality of sound. No it's not a valve amp but I really wish that they would make a comeback in a way where the supply demand worked out to a much greater value where it's potential really lies when it comes to tube amplifiers but, we'll probably never get there unfortunately. Going off on a tangent here so I'll stop. I think I may buy this product myself and I really hope that the 75 watt rating at 8 ohms is conservative rather than liberal like a lot of manufacturers do with their marketing these days.

I still definitely prefer a separate amp and passives. You can then upgrade either separately, obviously, and it should mean the speakers themselves can cost less with the same quality. That said, this unit is not for me - I already got the Cinema 70s which is much more like it for my hybrid home theater / music system. I might wind up with an external power amp for the front three. Honestly, I think it's time for some backlash against the powered speaker and soundbar movement.
