This video is Chapter 2 of 4 in a series examining the Post-Medieval archaeology of north bank of the River Tyne.
This video is a digital offering, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in lieu of a field trip for students who would typically be on a guided tour from the Quayside in Newcastle to North Shields and Tynemouth in a single afternoon.

At 8:13 - it is said that George Stephenson was born at Willington Quay. George Stephenson was actually born at Wylam, 9th June 1781, he later moved to the cottage at Willington Quay where his son, Robert, was born, 16 October 1803.

Remember when I was a kid, very early memory of seeing the boots mosaic, and being slightly confused why the boots store was located over the road in the forum..! It's very sad that the mosaic wasn't preserved and instead, replaced with crap!

Hello, firstly thank you for your video. I found it extremely interesting. In the last year I've been e-biking along from Newcastle to Tynemouth often taking in Wallsend. In fact my first teaching job was at Willington High school (now Churchill school). I find the area around the former shipyards and Wallsend fascinating. I remember seeing all the cranes from my classroom in 1983.
