That seems a bit low on the power compared to some of these guys I see running VKS setup to 50-60 joules

That one is stock right out of the box. If the power was higher, pepper balls would break in the barrel, causing problems when they get a face full of irritants instead of the attacker's. Shawn, on his Less Lethal for Dummies channel, shows people how to mod the Valken launchers to the specs you are talking about. His videos are very informative.

If you're just using it for kinetic rounds, it has a velocity adjustment screw on the left side of the rifle above the trigger. Mine is shooting at 25 joules right now. You can also use pepper balls in it. You just have to buy a different brand. The Duke pepperballs worked perfectly in it at 25 joules.
