I was last there for a holiday in 2015 and it sounds like it's gotten wankier and has a bigger cohort of hippies/wannabe hippies and trashy party people, while the ratio of genuine surfer types has decreased. Doubt you could do the fish and chips on the beach for ten bucks type thing anymore. Like they ran out of room in Nimbin and Mullumbimby and people have started living in Byron. Or people want to be hippies without having to live in Mullumbimby and Nimbin. Plus now celebrities live there so everyone else wants to.

Had to go there a couple of years ago for non-tourist reasons, and it's a god damned nightmare. They're working on a bypass, perhaps if that's done the daily peak traffic jams might have eased off, but god, the tiny cafes absolutely packed with trendy yuppie types and influencers were a horror show. So much hot breath from strangers on you because there's no wiggle room anymore. I dunno why they're talking about 'vibes', the gentrification of Byron totally destroyed its once chill, dilapidated, laid-back beach shanty town vibe, absolutely a completely different place.

First time I went to Byron, got a park, went to lighthouse, had a coffee, listened to someone playing a guitar and singing in Spanish. Second time I went to Byron I never made it. There was a traffic jam. Turned around and left. Third time I went to Byron to get parking was a major problem, cafes and bars were full of people wearing "beachy/hippie clothes" they literally just bought the day before at some boutique store. Forth time my wife suggested we go but I had other things on that weekend - like watching paint dry. Fifth time... who am I kidding? No one goes to Byron for a fifth time. Do they? To be honest I haven't been for years but everyone says the place has become insufferable.
