I would probably go with the compass over the outback, the biggest reason for me is the fact of it being lighter for me to transport it especially car topping it too. 68 lbs vs 85 lbs empty is a big difference.

Great review. I have one of each from 2021 and your comments are spot-on. One additional no-brainer addition to the Compass is the web pockets where they lack the H-rial of the Outback. They are dirt-cheap, holes are pre-drilled and gives you a place for pliers, fish grips, lure scent, etc. Oh, and the cup holder on the Compass is inferior to the Outback. Thanks mate!

Great video. Nailed it. I just made this decision a month ago.! I went with the Camo Compass with turbo fins, added the rectangular hatch, moved the round hatch up front to hold the battery, added a map pocket on the right and a berleypro sidebro on the left. FYI you cannot do the vertical hatch on the 22 Compass. Only rectangular. I feel it is set up nicely for the inshore fishing I do and it’s a little easier to maneuver off the water.

A seat upgrade for the compass is AWESOME!! I had both the 2021 Outback and a 2018 Compass. I got way wetter in the Outback because it would cut through waves instead of going over. I am going to get two 2022 Compasses and be way happier than the Outback.

Awesome review mate. I've recently been on the market for my first fishing yak and I'm finding it hard not to go the hobie route. The compass in my opinion seems to be the better yak. Less weight, better inshore fishing as you don't get as wet. The storage is an easy and inexpensive fix and as for the rest it all seems the OB accessories are more of a flex and that's about it.

I went in to buy a compass ( I still think its a great kayak) this was 2019) , they both had plastic seats,. The Outback came with 180 drive as well as Turbo fins. in2019 you had to find a dealer to swap the fins for 180 at a small upcharge. When I went there and compare the two kayaks from a fishing standpoint, the Outback was layed out better. You would have to buy an H rail mod and the transducer protector you mention( the outback doesn't need it (it has the retractable mount used in the Pro Angler). Add up the mods to the Compass I could buy the Outback. After two years of fishing in saltwater and shallow water I love the outback, only regret the passport seat is better.

Ill add a different perspective... I fish the Texas coast. This include marshes, bayous, back lakes, flats, some near shore, and some FW lakes. I fish 1 to 2 times weekly. I went from a compass to a Passport 12.0. The Compass has an absolute tiny cockpit. The rear storage is enormous, to the poont of being impractical. Once adding the horizonal rectangular storage, the compass is uncomfortable to stand in over time. The passport 12.0 has a much roomier cockpit allowing me to stand, fish, and stretch. The Passport 12.0 amd the compass are both light weight. I have no issues with standing in the Passport. With the addition of the vertical rectangular hatch and then moving the 8" round hatch to the bow, theres plenty of storage on the Passport. Bottom line, with a Passport 12.0 I added an anchcor trolley, vertical hatch with bucket, 8" round hatch bucket, map pockets, the XL deployable Passport rudder, and a custom 6mm 2 tone marine mat deck covering all for the cost of a base Compass. My Passport is as nimble and stable for me to fish out of as my Compass. 2 areas the compass is better. The seat and having the 180 drive. The seat issue was corrected with a $25 4" gel cushion from amazon and I have found that I rarely wanting to go in reverse.

@@ByronTeaHill when you compare it to a small tinny. While they do different things that’s the comparison. Then you take it down to the kayak vs kayak level, that extra $900 could go a long way. Like you said about expensive vs more affordable gear. The difference could be a high end rod and reel or 2 mid range rod and reels with the compass vs the outback and no extra rod and reels.
@elvisthumper12793 жыл бұрын
Great comparison BTH. (Disclaimer I sell Hobies). They are both great yaks, however personally I think the initial versatility of the Outback is worth the money. The rail system combined with the trac mounts makes mounting any sort of fishing pimp (rod holder, sounder, go pro, phone holder etc) so much easier, faster and more versatile. Personally the first accessory I’d add (and did/do/recommend is a Scotty or Railblaza rod holder on one of the rails. Really helps when unhooking fish, tying knots etc. Plus I also think the moulded-in rod holders are way too large - great to see they are being changed.
@ByronTeaHill3 жыл бұрын
Nice Elvis. I think you can do all of what you mentioned on the track mounts in the compass. I’ve said it before, imo if you mount anything on the Hrails in the Hobie your robbing yourself of about 4 inches of cockpit area. Always mount on the outside! Thanks for getting involved buddy.
@elvisthumper12793 жыл бұрын
@@ByronTeaHill I hear you on the H rail mounts, however I’ve had some instances of the trac mount becoming loose under weight (7” Sounder) so moved it to the far end of the H rail, lose a tiny bit of space, but it’s really around my feet so not a big deal. I also have a X style railblaza phone holder mounted on the far end of the left rail for the simple fact is if it does fall out, I want my phone to fall into the boat - not out of it. (Touch wood). But other than those two- yes trac mount.

Great review Byron. One thing that I found to be added for Compass is that the loader to protect the rudder is an extra $, meanwhile for Outback, it is included. Also the foot pads. So, a bit more upgrades are needed for the Compass to be similar to Outback. One mate of mine did cost comparison with the 2020 model to make the compass to be on-par with Outback in majority of the areas, in the end it is just AUD500-ish different. What matters at the end are the specific features that needed: weight (compass is lighter if to car topping it), hull design (better maneuverability and speed vs more stability) vs 2 steering handles, H-Rail, power pole ready that are unique to Outback.

I own an Outback and a Lynx, but if had to have only one yak, that'd be the Compass. Frankly-more than plenty for everything you need a fishing yak for. Don't get me wrong, the Outback is a phenomenally good kayak and I love everything about mine, except for the weight but I found I need much less gear than I thought so no need for all that capacity. P.S. You can cut out a rectangular hatch for the Compass if you so wish I believe and also-cut a hatch in the front if needed.

Good review, I have the 2020 compass and goes a treat, I have found I get a bit of water egress through the round hatch up the front as lots of water spills into that area when fishing inshore in a bit of chop. I probably wouldn’t move the round hatch up front if I had my time again, just cause of the amount of water that sloshes around in that area with waves.

Sorry but I think 5300 bucks (naked) for one of those is ridiculous. For about 2500 you can buy and 100% customise ANY kayak to your personal preference and the specs you need in your fishing grounds. For instance... Seating, rod holders, shades, motors, spoilers, landing gear and music more. If a kayak reaches a price range of "boat", the concept is a mismatch. At least for my taste and wallet.
