Hi James. My first husband and I used to stay in the back of our Volvo Estate in the summer. We'd go all over North Norfolk. One night we parked by the edge of a remote field, got snuggled down and went to sleep in the peace and quiet.... about 3am a police lady shone her torch in and woke us up! She and her partner said they just wanted to make sure we were both safe and well. She asked if I was okay, I reassured her I was, and the bloke I was with was my lovely hubby. We all smiled, and it was fine. Nowt t' be scared of, it's a good world. Thanks for all your videos, we love them all.

@@Plump-old-housewife I’m a Norfolk gal living in London now (bad choice)and I’m always going back but now it’s become so expensive to stay there in hotels etc and I did think of sleeping in my car one time …..was warned by a friend not to,as some new comers to our country don’t mind that you are an elder and will do want they want …. That scared me too so that thought was pushed to back of my mind….. However I’ve found a lovely pub with fabulous food and that love family life and now I feel happy staying there alone ….. Love your story ❤️

It should tell you something about how comfortable you make your followers feel in all your videos that I’m sat here watching this about park ups when I doubt I will ever spend a night in a van on my own. It’s your voice. It’s so relaxing and you are intrinsically funny. I would be scared on my own at night.

Well done James, when I lived in the UK my wife and I ‘wild camped’ all over the country. I could count on one hand over many years, the number of times I was asked to move on. Like you, we occasionally used sites. It’s a whole different way of living if you do it for weeks or months on end. Water, loo emptying, solar energy, being invisible as far a possible. You don’t start sitting or barbecuing outside in a town or city. Finally, I would recommend France as paradise for van dwellers. Villages and small towns are used to van travellers. The Aires are fabulous some with services. Great vlog by the way.

Hi James. Another great vlog. You are right about the train system in this country. It's absolutely shocking. I travel frequently in Germany, and I can travel from North to South, East to West around the clock. I can't even get to Manchester Airport by train from Liverpool for an early departure until after 8.40am. When I arrive in Frankfurt, Munich or Düsseldorf, no matter the time of day, I can connect to any other part of Germany. My rant over 😂 Looking forward to your next rant....luv them.

I lived through the late fifties and through the sixties. There's no comparison to the country we lived in then. My van is knackered and I tried to buy a car today in order to keep mobile. Anyway that went wrong because he gave me the wrong registration number. Now it looks like we're at the end of the road. Pension is no good, you've got to have a massive income to do van life in Britain.
@johngrant54483 ай бұрын
@thedustyroad-g4n It is, I believe, made deliberately difficult in Britain. This place is dominated by greed and jealousy, and I've experienced Karens at my van on two occasions. They look for reasons why I shouldn't be allowed to live freely. These witches have no idea just how dangerous I can become in an instant. I first discovered this personal trait when I was subjected to psychometric testing many decades ago. The following day, I heard a female tapping on my windscreen and talking to her husband. It was at that point that I exploded with rage. The female was referring to my parking disc, apparently. I though, was about to cause physical damage. The female was quite shaken. I was in uniform for 20 years and had to deal with the public daily, as a result, I learned how to use overwhelming force against the wrongdoers. I know from personal experience that I can smash up everything in my path in seconds. My colleagues knew this too. I'm taking shit from nobody and it's time that others took that stance too. In the fifties, sixties and early seventies, Britain was a very respectful nation, which Thatcher ended.

I see and hear more Van Life is giving up then buying. Most of my park ups have gone and most of them are due with height. Barriers very annoying as I have two dogs and most of my park ups of places where I could take my dogs I cannot take them anymore. The UK is getting ridiculous for parking. I don’t care what anyone says properly in certain areas you’ll be okay but when you’ve got a high top van and two dogs in the van staring to regret selling my car 😢

Hi James. I agree. No one is bothered about where you park as long as you’re sensible. Only time I’ve had the knock is vanlifers who’ve run out of tea bags or whatever and a trucker who asked me to move up a couple of yards so he could fit in the lay by.
@paulhughes25582 ай бұрын
Great video mate, I think the only thing I’d add is to make sure wherever you park up, that you have a good phone signal just in case and always have your van keys to hand in case you need them quick.

Good video, James. But a word of warning on Toby Carvery's. The one in Middlesbrough has PNR cameras. They even trick regular customers out who are on autopilot and don't imput their car registration number plate into the machine inside. I think that gives you 2 hours parking. But an auto fine if you don't. So definitely check it out before just parking up for the night.

Sleeping in a vehicle, even a car, is usually ok, but when my mum was in hospital I'd catch a few hours between visiting times, I say in the front of the car, with the seat cranked back, put a blanket on my lap, put my cost on backwards, the good over my face, and settled down, for a little bit, but had 2 people knocking on my window making sure I was ok, which was lovely, and showed that people still care, but I was soooooo bloody tired. 😂

We have a VW T5 camper van and never had a problem in over two years, I think you less likely to have problems in a camper as there’s a good chance there’s someone in it whereas vans get broken into by people looking for tools to steal, once the curtains are pulled no one knows if there’s a 5” 2’ woman or a 6” 10’ rugby player in there ! A dog makes for good company and even better security 👍🏻🇬🇧

Hello, have just subscribed to your channel. I had been in a van for three years and lived mainly in Brighton. Had a great spot in a small Industrial estate in Shore-ham-by-the sea, it was great as i have local firms knock on the van on a Saturday morning with a coffee and a bacon butty - so there are some great places - I also have parked in a street but knocked on the house, and ask if they had a problem with me being there for a night - and to my surprise they say they had no issues - hand offered me a morning cuppa. So there are some really nice friendly people about - but like you said - safety in numbers and well lit up - You also said about additional security - You can never have too much security - Anyway not to hog the channel - Lovin the video blog - and when i get a replacement van i will be posting my own v-blogs Take care.

I currently dont have a cab pass through which Ive been wanting after an incident that made me realise I wasnt in control of the situation if there were people outside doing something I didnt like. My truck makes a pass through very difficult to do but Id say its mandadory for being able to pull up somewhere and jump in the back un seen and jump in the cab to drive away in a hurry. Industry estates are easily the best park ups, after 5 its quiet with nobody around and no one using the 4g towers :)

My friend has been everywhere in his camper over the last 15 years. I think he's been fishing to every lake, river, and sea in the country. He said he's never had someone knock on his window. The only time he ever had someone knock on his window was when he was camped outside his own house in his camper when his wife's parents were visiting and he was short of space ( he wanted space from them ) At 3am, the police banged on his window. After he explained the situation, they wished him well and shared their sympathys for having the in laws visiting for a month.

Head over thought Tong village(wonderful) over to Birstall and pick up the Halifax road.Just wander down any back lane,robbertown,hartshead,etc and seek out those wonderful properties. It’s Luddite country so look for the big statue of a shearer waving his giant shears in the air.the shears pub has just closed,but that’s where the rioting luddites used to meet. The Car park in Chester #is called 'The Little Roodee' Car Park. Excellent access to the city centre. Litterally only a 5-10 minute walk away.

Hi James, Its about time you crossed the border and visited Scotland. You will be safe there are lots of Us Yorkshire folk up here x

I agree 100% I'd like to do a big trip there. Will definitely arrange something soon.

@bythecurb If you do James please make sure you bypass all the places that over the last month most of the other visiting youtubers went to. There are so so many brilliant places here in Dumfries and Galloway still wide open for exploration. It saddens me that they all went to the same places. We have bee up here 20 years now after buying a house whilst visiting in a MH. Explore the unexpected.x

Drive along the A61 Leeds road between Wakefield and Leeds, about 2to3 miles along you'll take a 90degree turn into Outwood. The second left turn after that corner is Annie street, turn up there. The first left turn at the top of the street has a small free-parking area at the top: I'm quite certain you could spend a trouble-free night there a few times a year! I really enjoyed your recent ghost-night in York!! Let me know when you're coming over and I'll buy you both a pint in the Queen. (Which is called Leger now, but I still call it The Queen.) You can tell me all about your new life: I genuinely am jealous!

That opening clip was a trip down memory lane for me, I live in Teesside now as I moved for work, but I used to live in Painthorpe, just up from Newmiller Damn, we used to pop down to the Navigation, I recognised that narrow bridge as you approach.
