Kurtz is in his 30's, he does not know the importance of the BYU/ Miami game from 1990. That game is legend now. That Miami team was more than legit. Finished 3rd that year and Detmer won the heisman, largely due to that game.

I must agree. I sat on the 50 yard line at the 1990 game and do not remember even sitting down after the Miami players led off with their strutting around th field. I remember the BYU punt receiver refusing to raise his hand regardless of being surrounded by the Miami players. Best game ever.

I was 16 years old and at the Miami game. I don't so much recall that game, but that game's outcome was beyond awesome! I was at the K-State game on Saturday. The game was fantastic, but pales in significance to beating Miami. The fan experience is better now. However, short of rushing the field (which wouldn't be appropriate for beating #12 team), both sets of fans were into the game and overwhelmingly excited.

One of the underrated parts of independence was how much the game day atmosphere improved during those years. BYU had the opportunity to play teams from all over the country and see first hand what makes an elite homefield advantage. I also think our fanbase has taken on a very friendly welcoming attitude due to being welcomed by teams like Nebraska, Wisconson, etc. during independence.
@bbspeaks62602 ай бұрын
That's a good point. I've attend various BYU home games over the years. The experience Kurt described is fairly new. The school has made a massive investment in it. 10 years ago you would have seen just the opposite. Zero pre-game excitement. 20 minutes after the game the parking lots and neighborhood was empty. I attended BYU at TCU in the early 2000's and remember hearing AD talking about their pre-game experience and wanting to follow suit, clearly patterned Cougar Canyon after that. I'm a bit skeptical to see if it will keep up. The difference that BYU has and other schools is that the excitement you see at games is fan-based as opposed to school sponsored. But good on them for improving the in-game experience. COSMO and the 4th quarter transition is more an NFL/NBA style experience.

MYTH. Your statement is not based on fact, but rather your feelings. Sagarin Ratings has Utah at #11 in SoS right now, ahead of OKState at 15, Iowa State at 18 and BYU at 29. Sagarin Ratings are often cited as the Gold Standard in SoS. TeamRankings has Utah at 26, behind only WVU and TCU. BYU is 38. Power Rankings Guru has them all the way down at 54; so if your looking for a ‘source’ this place may be your best bet--and if you’ve heard of these guys before, congrats. Obviously Utah doesn’t play against themselves, and so as the top rated team all others who play them get to cite Utah as a tough opponent. But outside of that Utah plays the other 4 teams that are right now considered the Top-5 in the power rankings by most pundits; Utah, BYU, Iowa State, UCF and OkState. I agree; there’s no Cincinnati, West Virginia or Kansas on the schedule. Oh wait……

John the Kansas Wildcat march was written by John Phillip Sousa for KSU. John Phillip Sousa was one of the greatest American Romantic composers. I will put this in terms you can understand-this would be like if Kanye dedicated a song to KSU. A hundred years from now this song might be not popular but I still think the band should play it. It is an honor that a musician would dedicate a song or piece of music specifically to a school. Also it is a march and the marching band plays it. Like most reasonable BYU fans, with 2 minutes left in the first half -- I think I just kinda prayed that we could keep things close enough to get a deciding turnover late or something. Cuz turning-the-tables & outplaying you straight-up just didn't seem like an option. The speed factor between Johnson & your two RBs was obviously something our D was struggling with. And the early returns on our young RB corps was NOT looking promising at all. Obviously, you guys are gonna rebound & be real good by the end of November, I think.

Great job! Vegas & others still don't get BYU's defense this year. The only ones giving Y's defense respect are opposing coaches. BYU's defense is a pro-defense this year. Believe me. They're legit. They're for real! Y's defense is why they are 7-0. People don't get it. Y's defense has shut down each opponent this year. And they've faced some of the best offenses. They've exposed opponent's offensive weaknesses and exploited them. Y's defense makes opponent's offenses make mistakes. And what's more? Y's defense fuels, pumps up their offense. Y's defensive backs, secondary shuts down receivers, which then gives time for the down 4 guys and linebackers to stop the run, pressure, and sack the qb. They showed this well with K-State. And when Y's defensive front and linebackers pressure qb's, they make mistakes, throw picks. And when Y's defense pressures the qb, it's over. Y's defensive secondary are ball hawks. BYU has already seen UCF already this year. How? They saw them in K-State, in Baylor, in OK State, and in AZ. Yes, Iowa St. barely beat UCF. But BYU this year is no Iowa St. Why? Because of Y's defense. BYU UCF game is gonna be like K-State and Baylor. This may even be another route for BYU. Why? The inexperience of UCF QB. He's young and inexperienced. And when Hill throws his pro defensive schemes at UCF, their QB is gonna make mistakes and throw picks, just like K-State QB did. All BYU has to worry about with UCF is stopping the run. Because UCF QB can't throw. He's not proven he can throw. That's how they lost against Iowa St. This is why this might be another route for BYU. Yes, even though it's in Orlando and historically BYU has not fared well east of the Mississippi. Not this year. Why? Again, I keep saying this. Y's DEFENSE! Plus their veterans, very experienced, and play for each other. Chemistry! Away games do not matter to BYU this year. No one wants to play the Cougs this year because they're real, they're legit, they're scary, and they ARE DANGEROUS! Especially their DEFENSE! What's the score for this game. 38-21, BYU wins. UCF will not be able to score enough points. Why? You guessed it. BYU'S DEFENSE. This is a magical season for the COUGS! Yes, I'm an alum, '02. But, this has been an objective analysis. Pundits and voters, start giving BYU the respect they have already deserved and earned. They will be 8-0 after Saturday's game in Orlando.
