About the chant:
Theodorakis composed his oratorio “To Axion Esti” as a deliberate replacement of the praise of Mary by a praise of the Greek Motherland, which finds its central expression in a chorus “Naoi sto schema t’ouranou,” depicted as sung by partisan soldiers on a particularly desolate march. The instrumental section of this piece was then used with modern choreography for a dance which celebrated the cycling descent and reascent of Kore/Persephone. (The one goddess is named Kore [maiden] in the upper world and Persephone [bringer of destruction] in the lower world.) In this way the role of the goddess present in the liturgical chant Axion Esti was resored to Theodorakis’ tune by the choreographer. The words of the oratorio did not fit the theme of the dance Kore, and so I have fitted the original words of Axion Esti to the music, while maintaining the rhythm of the proper chant to these words. As a mark of acknowledgment to the spirit and work of Theodorakis, I have suggested a modern Greek pronunciation of these words.

I am chaldean christian from iraq but i live in istanbul (Constantinople), and every time i visit a greek orthodox church i start crying because they are all empty even in the mass there is just two or three people, because there is just a few greeks left in istanbul, i hope they will become more again 😭😭🙏❤️

Bare with me here :) but the only Theodorakis I'm familiar with is Mikis Theodorakis, composer of more contemporary songs including the theme for Zorba The Greek and one of my very favorite songs: An Thimithis T' Oniro Mou. I suspect that the Theodorakis who composed the music for this chant is another talented person. Careful here, ecumenism is devil's trap. There is only one True Church and that is the EasternOrthodox. All other churches are heresies. We are all God's children regardless of religion and should love one another. I suggest you read Klaus Kenneth's books on how he turned to Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy (Ορθοδοξία) meas True Belief in Greek. The icon is a more modern variation of Panagia Glykophilousa, "Sweet-kissing" or "Loving Kindness" icon which depicts the Virgin Mary caressing her son, so that they appear to be kissing. In the Byzantine representations, the Child caresses her cheek while she appears sad, seemingly contemplating his coming Passion.

@@AdorationOfTheCross sure! 0:51 should be ημών instead of ημον 1:21 should be Χερουβείμ instead of Χερουβιμ 1:30 should be ασυγκρίτως instead of α συγκροτος and Σεραφείμ instead of Σεραφιμ 2:10 should be τεκούσαν instead of τεκοθσαν I'm Greek, I've studied and know Ancient and Byzantine Greek and additionally I have been studying Byzantine music for at least 2 years and seen this chant multiple times. I could also transcribe the chant in polytonic (traditional) Greek script, if you want.
