BJJ Guard Retention with a Stiff-Arm: all guard retention in jiu-jitsu comes down to your ability to manage the distance between yourself and your partner. Most of the time this happens with the legs…but don’t under-estimate the power of a strong frame at the upper body to create space to recover the guard.
In a case where we are seated facing a standing partner, we use grip-breaks and a strong cross-collar grip to establish a stiff arm, keeping our partner away. This space lets us track our partner long enough to level change with the heist and to keep our legs in front of us. Then, since we always favor going on the offensive as soon as possible, we use the heist and sit-down to create an “action-reaction” leading right into the double koichi block for the reversal.
Keeping in mind the risks of an extended arm, this grip allows us to frame out from the bottom position, readjust our angle and track our partner to keep the guard intact.
