This video shows the passenger view from a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III and was taken from the aerial refueling mission I documented in a previous project. This footage specifically demonstrates tactical maneuvers during takeoff and landing that would be used in a combat environment. Aircraft data is as follows:
US Air Force Boeing C-17 Globemaster III Nr. 55139 - 452nd AMW
Many thanks to the men and women of the United States Air Force and especially the wonderful people at March Air Reserve Base for making this video possible. I hope to bring inspiration to the aviation community and demonstrate the hard work and efforts of our armed forces.

This is pure awesomeness! Passenger perspective is not exactly common on this aircraft, so this is a real jewel. As you said, those flaps mean business.

Every time I see one landing or taking off around San Antonio, I marvel at the brilliance of the aerodynamic design of the MAIN WING which always looks “too small to lift that much” but does, and does it pretty damn good at the same time.

Awesome video. I live near Joint Base MDL and seeing one of these beauts is a rarity. The C-17 truly is a marvelous piece of machinery. It may be big, it may look like it was built wrong to some, it may be clunky and they may be quite old BUT they are the an integral part of the US Air Force. True die-hard workhorses! I'm just amazed that an aircraft of that magnitude literally slowed down to taxi speed in around 12 seconds once the wheels touched down. *MIND BLOWN*

@LoveJT8D 6 жыл бұрын
Tomyfamily 18 The aero dynamic capabilities of this plane are just insane. I believe since the flaps to all the way across, some of the engine exhaust is deflected across the flaps allowing for some pretty slow approach speeds. Maybe someone with more experience can jump in here and describe things better than I, but that’s the idea anyway.
@tomyfamily1
@tomyfamily1 6 жыл бұрын
LoveJT8D Actually you nailed it. The C-17 was designed to fly like an oversized fighter. Capable of doing 89°deg roll high G turns. The flaps shove so much air downwards, the plane can hold itself up at speeds near 100kts. I used to jump from them when I was in the Army. Truly amazing aircraft.

Jeff Martin I think it appears that way as I made an edit cut after rotation to get to the “nose up” part quicker. This video is an excerpt from a more in-depth aerial refueling video I made. In that video the loadmaster provides commentary and describes all of our moves. I can say on that takeoff, we hugged the runway a while then did a moderate nose up before turning left. You could definitely feel yourself planted in the seat. Granted the tactical aspect may have been slightly watered down. Thanks for stopping by and watching 👍

Dual specialties with the 17 and M. Units should be and retain ceros for both platforms and as both are critical, the incentive pay or promotion when able to execute repair and retain skill to instruct current and future jet/cargo mech’s. A fighter unit is good but once, afterward needs refuel, re supply, re spec’d and where does the American ingredients for such come from, same origination for existence of combat groups, battalions, wings and divisions, largest aircraft running efficiently, promptly on ASAP/stat readiness with the aircrafts belly full of 100% U.S. Adams’s kick ass beef... @LoveJT8D
@LoveJT8D 7 жыл бұрын
The majority of the landing was with heavy brake application in the landing gear. You will notice, there is no break in the flaps around the engines, so the engine thrust hitting the deployed flaps allows for slower approaches.
@EVAUnit4A
@EVAUnit4A 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but isn't slowing with only wheel brakes dangerous to the health of the landing gear? I don't understand why they _didn't_ use thrust reverse here.
@adrianspeeder

Reverse thrust not required for landings. The brakes can do all the work faster than the useful aircraft speed range that thrust reversers are effective at.

For that tactical takeoff, were the engines (or would they typically be) at 100% power as in every itty bitty bit of juice they have - maxed out - firewalled - however you want to phrase it?
@LoveJT8D
@LoveJT8D 7 жыл бұрын
T``` B``` I don't believe they were firewalled, but maybe just a little extra juice. I think a lot of the climb power was a result of hugging the runway for a while after a lifting off.

That was a max power takeoff. Each electronic engine computer will calculate from dozens of environmental variables what the maximum thrust available is when the takeoff data is crunched by the mission computer at that moment. All that has to be done then is push the throttles to the stops, and the EEC's do the rest to hold the motors at the redline. The other choice is a "derated thrust" option that calculates the minimum amount of thrust for takeoff factoring in weight, weather, and terrain. Saves gas, and saves wear and tear, but not used when we got to GTFO!
@helenweston4050
@helenweston4050 6 жыл бұрын
This is neither a tactical take off or landing. When taking off the force is so immense you are flattened. You certainly wouldn't be able to stand up and film out of a window. Similarly the landing is pretty relaxed too. Speaking from operational experience here.
@LoveJT8D
@LoveJT8D 6 жыл бұрын
Helen Weston Thanks for watching and your input. This video was an excerpt from a longer aerial refueling video where the loadmaster explains all the maneuvers beforehand. It may have been a watered down version but I recall hugging low to the ground after liftoff then a fairly sharp nose up and steep left bank. The landing itself was more of a soft/short field landing, but the tactical portion was more in the descent. Nose down and circling over the airfield in a steep bank until we hit the desired altitude.

And it is the KC-10. Not sure if you know but it goes like this (for anyone who cares): C-5 Galaxy C-17 Globemaster III C-130 Hercules C-141 Starlifter KC-10 Extender KC-135 Stratotanker LoL, I will skip the rest. My knowledge of AF planes comes from the half of my life I spent on Active Duty in the Air Force. Good times.
