C-27J Spartan Mass Departure | RAAF Base Amberley

On 19 October 2021, Number 35 Squadron launched seven C-27J Spartans simultaneously at RAAF Base Amberley, demonstrating its preparedness to support contingency operations as well as recent improvements to fleet availability. An eighth Spartan was operating elsewhere on the same day.
The C-27J Spartan was introduced to RAAF service in 2015, and provides a light tactical airlift between Army rotary-wing and larger Air Force transports. The aircraft has already proven its ability to support Defence, Government, and regional operations, including Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, engagements with foreign Defence and Government, and maritime surveillance to protect sovereign areas of South Pacific nations.

I flew the UH-1H Iroquois helicopters with 35 Squadron when it was based in Townsville QLD. At that time, 35 Sqn was a joint aircraft unit. We had Caribou fixed wing aircraft and the “Huey” choppers. I served there for 12 months before being posted to the Middle East to fly Huey’s in the Peace Keeping Force between Egypt and Israel. I was then posted back to 35 Sqn in Townsville & stayed there for another 2.5 years. Wonderful memories & great experiences. I salute all present day & former Military Veterans.

Just saw a US Coast Guard C-27J flying overhead near US Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento in Northern California. It sounds and looks like a miniature C-130. Hope to visit Australia some day, Australians seem to like Americans and the feeling is mutual.

The ADF downgraded the role of the C27 in July 2021 to humanitarian and emergency response to natural disasters. The aircraft was purchased to fulfill the battlefield airlift role. Going from battlefield airlift to humanitarian roles is a major redefinition in the ADFs operational expectations for this aircraft. For everyone, that does not agree with me, go and do your research!

What the C-27j was acquired to do, transportation of goods and troops, it is doing as intended. It is the battle field protection avionics which was bought as with the US Spartans. Due to the US government not acquiring the full complement of Spartans, they were going to acquire up to 140 aircraft, the battle field protection avionics there are issues over that. The battle field protection avionics can be upgraded. The C-130js are currently being upgraded.

SEVEN aircraft? (Tin hats and flak jackets time). When I was serving with 486 SQN. Richmond, we managed to fly, ALL 24 C130 Hercules, of 36 and 37 SQN. Drove the locals nuts in Richmond, when they returned low over the town in flights of 3, 8 times.

Underpowered???? The C-27j is the most powerful twin turboprop military transport aircraft. The latest upgrades, there is an option to have the engines to have an output of 5,100 shp.

I remember seeing f111s amongst others flying over brissy all the time in the 80s 90s now you see no RAAF aircraft at all. It's sad. Where as every 15min in Townsville flocks of hornets buzz the town,I know because of the training base and that it's a garrison city. Please RAAF, please buzz Logan and Brissy a bit more. Yes I'm a RAAF c.ck but who isn't a little deep down. We get more hooks than cops,more commercial airlines flying over, how about a superhornet 2 ship or f35 pleeeeeease.

G.222 Panda, they first came into service in the late 70s with the Italian air force, the US then got a number of them and called them C-27A Spartans. So still a Panda despite what the yanks call them

Wrong! The C-27J Spartan has been totally redeveloped from the G-222 or C-27a. With far more powerful engines, modern avionics, stronger fuselage, completely new undercarriage etc.

The US made significant upgrades to the Panda, including a new cockpit, engines, and propellor design from the Hercules, hence it was redesignated the C-27 A Spartan. The C-27 J evolved from experience with the C-27A and the Panda. It is a significantly better aircraft. The C27J Spartan kept the US style designation because it now has significant interoperability with the C-130J platform. Compared to the Panda it has 35% greater range, and 15% higher cruising speed. The RAAF chose the Spartan due to the cargo space is large enough to carry G-Wagons and palletized goods.

The Spartan is a great multi role aircraft and it is one of the most capable battlefield airlifters, transport and cargo planes. It is great because it can fit the gap between the chinook and the herc. Get your facts straight before commenting.
