I was at Avalon Air Show one year, just before Australia got the super hornet I think.... There was some impressive flying on display from F15's and Super Hornets..... Then came the Aussie's turn, in his bog standard, non "super" Hornet..... And he absolutely tore the bags out of it... Best display I've ever seen to this day... Didn't matter that he couldn't do the cobra shit, he ripped it up, balls to the wall, like Summernats.

They seem terrifyingly close to the ground in some of those maneuvers, especially when the aircraft is rolled onto its side. Just raw power holding them in the sky. Does anyone have any idea what sort of minimum height they would be flying at? Is it standard proceedure to release to infrared missile decoys when rolling away like that or only when being targeted?
@MrJules2U2 жыл бұрын
Flares for IR missile decoy. There are different programs you can set for release profiles of countermeasures. Preferably better to use them during an exercise than in a real dogfight!

What a joke, these can't fly outside of Australia except from carriers, if they flew to say Solomon islands to intercept they'd have about 5 minutes loitering time they'd have to return straight home.. Australia doesn't even have one carrier!!
@RobertLewis-el9ub2 жыл бұрын
They showed the fuel tanker aircraft in the video. Depending on how many times you want to refuel determines the flight radius (pilot fatigue aside). So being conservative - radius from Australia out as far as Indonesian and PNG airspace - no problem. Far in excess of a carrier group airwing - who have very limited tanking capability, the advantage of a carrier is surprise if it remains undetected. Australia has treaty access to airfields across most of SE Asia if needed (Singapore/Malaysia/Guam/Japan).
