At least this church asked for someone who had the gift to interpret tongues. Most places don’t do that. When I read where Paul said we need a translator when speaking in tongues, only three at a time, etc, I was floored and did a lot of thinking about things.

Actually Paul said they need someone with the gift of interpretation of tongues, not translation of tongues, but I get your point and it is very valid.

Absolutely! Most charismatic churches seem to overlook those verses. I went to a church years ago where messages were given in tongues on a couple of occasions, and the service did not progress until someone had given an interpretation, which they did. But then I went to a church a couple of years ago where someone gave a message in tongues - no one gave an interpretation so after a few minutes, they just carried on as if nothing had happened. I didn't go to that church again...

One of the things I've never understood is why "speaking in tongues" means "gibberish". I've always felt that it meant "speaking other languages", and I feel the biblical evidences back that up.
@biblestudysoftware
@biblestudysoftware 8 жыл бұрын
In the New Testament, when speaking in tongues is mentioned, at least one person is present, who is not the speaker, who can understand what is said, because it is their native language, and if required, translate. It is extremely rare for contemporary speaking in tongues to be the native language of somebody present. Somewhat more common, but still fairly rare, is for it to be a second language that somebody in the audience knows. In my experience, when this is the case, the message curses both God and Heaven. In the overwhelming majority of instances, there are neither L1 nor L2 users of the language that is being spoken. Furthermore, there are no consistencies in apparent syntax, or vocabulary. That is why so much contemporary speaking in tongues is viewed as pure gibberish.

The Bible is still the authorative word of God. Study it for your self. But be careful of how others interpret it. Some pick and choose different scriptures to back up what they say without giving you the full context of the word. Most of time this comes from weekend Bible warriors who claim to be strong believers in God yet carry on as the world does on the week days. And the only time they read the word is in church with the pastor during service. We are told to work out our own salvation, by reading his whole word and going to God in prayer. The gift of tongues is still given to those God gives, His word never changes, God never changes, his people try to change him every day. And that's all churches.

Actually, the speaking in tongues doesn't mean speaking multiple languages but multiple people speaking in one language.It is what the apostle Paul called the " unknown tongue" and " the language of angels".In Acts ch.2 the believers at Pentecost were all speaking in this language and God allowed the people in the crowd to " Hear" what they said in their own languages.Speaking in this language happens as a result of the overflowing Spirit baptism.The reason most christians don' t speak in this language is because when they pray for the Lord to fill them with the Holy Spirit, and He does, they refuse to yield their tongue to the Spirit so He can bear witness, through their tongue, that they are " born of the Spirit" ( John ch.3).Thus they are not only not Spirit baptized but not " born of the Spirit".

@David Hawley - Hello. I have. Once in a Calvary Chapel branch in Southern California, mid to late 80's. A woman stood up in the row behind us (folding metal chairs in the rented cafeteria of a school) and started going at it - blah, blah, blah,,,, she was talking in espagnol. I had lived in So. California for 20+ years by then and I know Spanish when I hear it. I mentioned it later to the pastor. I said: "She was talking in Spanish, but the Bible says "Tongues" is an unknown language. Spanish is VERY known language'. He says: "Well, she was being moved by the Holy Spirit, and we do not want to hinder God's moving". Barf! I hate it when people blame stupid, and goofy things on God. We left that place about a month later. I had been the kindergarten & 5th Grade Lord's Day school teacher there, but when the Pastor goes along with "showboats" and false stuff, it is time to find a different church/chapel.

LOL, 😁 so true! I've been there. I'm an Orthodox Christian. For my artistic expression summer class, I went to a United Pentecostal (Oneness Pentecostal) church to study and describe a religious experience different from my own.I would never forget that the pastor would speak words like "Nolebelelelelebe!" and "Kileobemeshekebebebe!" I could imagine that even 3CPO would say those words are pure jibber-jabberish. I have autism BTW. So I used to make up strange weird words about places and people in my imaginary world when I was a kid, like "Enleecoleek!" and "Leedeedeep". So when the UPC congregation spoke in tongues, to me, they didn't sound much different from my autistic language. At one point during that service, the pastor got everybody, including me, to hold hands and make some strange gibberish words. I was holding hands with one parishner and another, a women in a long skirt making weird gibberish noises as the pastor screamed "Louder!!!! Louder!!! Praise the Lord!!! In the name of Jesus!!! In the name of Jesus!!!! (They constantly say 'In the name of Jesus', because they believe that God is NOT 3 different persons) Webuekeluekelealakalkaakaklalalklaka!" I kinda seriously thought I was going to lift off the floor and fly with the congregation, like Peter Pan! 😄 While it is true that miracles and spiritual gifts have NOT died away and are still given to certain believers today, it is not given in ways that the Pentecostals believe. For example, priests have the gifts of the Holy Spirit to administer sacraments like Baptism, particularly in an Orthodox Church. Compared to the Orthodox, I think Pentecostals and Charismatic Protestants interpret the gifts and use it like little kids, which is what the Church in Corinthians did.

He abruptly gets up and points at one of the ladies tongue speaking on stage and says "That's my language! She's blaspheming God in my language!" I think it might have been a bit much for them to kick her out after that. At least they could have checked her for a demon first. Also why it's important to have an interpreter. I'm thankful I found this video, about speaking in Tongues, I'm Pentecostal, but sorry to say I think a lot of people are frauds at church, and I take no pleasure in saying that. And God is going to separate everyone, the wheat from the chaff. But reading what Jesus said and the way he lived, it's really hard to justify the way some Pastors live, you'd have to do some mental gymnastics with the Word and logic to condone it. I have always been skeptical about speaking in Tongues, I think it does happen, but when it does, very few people will be there to witness it at all.

Growing up in the Pentecostal theology, I think you might misunderstand their conception of what tongues is. Pentecostals generally believe there is a "tongues" that is private prayer language, and then there are tongues for public exhortation, which require interpretation. Pentecostal denominations like the Assemblies of God are generally fairly strict about the use of tongues publicly, because they know it can descent into chaos without proper interpretation. The speaker isn't always the interpreter, although I've seen it be the case. My parents have also said they've witnessed it where they heard real human languages they understood. I don't see why God couldn't do that in order to increase the faith of people, even if Pentecostalism is by and large wrong ;). It also looks though that your friend misunderstands the gift of tongues as well. It's not supposed to be something you can just do on command and make up words. You're supposed to be receiving an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Anyway....I'm in the process of converting to Catholicism, so there's that, too LOL.

which corresponds to the thesis in Acts 1:8, that the gospel will be advanced in Judea (Acts 2), Samaria (tongues are implicit in Acts 8), and the ends of the earth (Acts 10, 19). The tongues are never repeated in Jerusalem, Samaria, or after the incident in Acts 19 (which is a transition between the old and new covenant [John vs. Jesus]). if you understand the bigger picture of the redemptive-historical aspect and purpose of Acts, then you will realize these instances are descriptive (and unique to each region), not prescriptive (and repeatable) events. these events indicate that Jesus' promise in 1:8 is coming true (in response to their question in 1:6). since the Spirit has been poured out on Jews, Samaritans, and Gentiles (thus fulfilling Joel's prophecy in 2:28), and since we have in Scripture the verification of God's approval of their conversions by speaking in other languages, tongues are no longer needed to verify that God now pours out His Spirit on all who call upon the name of the Lord Jesus. Sola Scriptura!

Ryan Case Then why would Paul describe tongues as a gift of the spirit on the same level as say teaching and leadership in Romans 12:6-8? I understand your argument and respect it, but at the same time I really think that you have to ignore a ton of scripture to come to that conclusion.

Loved the video! . What I find sadly ironic is church bodies will still endlessly debate whether or not speaking in tongues is "still a thing", even though it only gets referenced in a handful of verses in the Bible, but then give scant attention to the stuff Jesus himself, the Prophets, and the New Testament writers talk about 90% of the time: Saved by Grace thru Faith, forgiveness, repentance, mercy, compassion, kindness, gentleness, etc. . We get all focused on this one speck of debatable doctrine and ignore the massive tree trunk, "love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself...all the Law and Prophets hang on these" I recall God said something important about specks and logs too.... *shrugs

I'm not a Pentecostal, but I've never been comfortable with dismissing the possibility of a "prayer language." 1 Cor. 14:2 does say pretty plainly, "For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. For no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries." That doesn't sound anything at all like the miracle in Acts 2, where literally everyone who was present understood what was being said. I may be missing something obvious here, so... thoughts?

Keep reading. Paul goes on to explain that speaking in tongues isn't helpful to anyone but maybe the person speaking. When Paul uses the word mystery in this passage, he isn't using the word to mean "True Fact that God revealed that we don't quite understand". He's using the normal definition of "Nobody knows what that dude over there is babbling about".

I'm late to comment... I think this is a profound observation. People that use Acts 2 as a template ignore that it is just one example of tongues, while here we see another example. 2 people in this comment seems to think this second example is condemned later, but Paul says he uses this unknown tongue more than anyone, but in the church he does not use unknown tongues. I don't think the tonguecritics have a case here. We are to seek the gifts, including tongues, and this video is an example of disobedient christians mocking those who obey the Word. Sad.

Wait...1 Co 14:2 says "For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries". So doesn't that break the premise of this video? From what I understand this chapter talks more about order in the church. As in: praying in tongues is uninteligible and personal so it shoudn't be done during the service, but if you do there must be someone who translates.

OK I read it before but just to be safe I just read it again. Did you guys read the second half of my comment? The Bible seems very clear that there is such a thing as uninteligeble prayer and that we SHOULD do it, just not during community service. Look here: "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also." 1 Coríntios 14:14,15

Lucas - Very good points, thank you for making them. Not sure about the "SHOULD" do part, I think Paul makes it very clear in chapters 12 - 14 that God gives different gifts to each and we should not think that our particular gifts are better or worse, more or less necessary. I think that is the main issue when it comes to tongues. People see one area of Christendom acting like tongues are All That and don't understand it, so they criticize and claim it must be all bunk, while the ones that support tongues often act like it is the be all and end all of Christianity, take to extremes often, and look down their noses at those that don't have that gifting. The truth, like most (though not all) things in the denominational divides, lies more likely somewhere in between. As Luther himself posited: most things that seem like contradictions in the Bible - faith vs. works, predestination vs. free-will, liberty vs. legalism - are more likely God's way of keeping a human race that tends to like to put things in nice neat little boxes, from going too far one extreme or the other. We just aren't comfortable with things that don't have a clear, easy explanation.

This is a very good comment. Just to clarify one thing, The tongue speakers don't think it all in all to speak tongues, the NON SPEAKERS are the ones that attack us to make us wrong, foolish, controlled by the devil, ect, so we come back to defend it. Speaking in tongues is the least of the gifts, but we spend most of our time defending it. If someone makes fun of healing, we will defend it, or prophesy, or word of knowledge, ect. We look at Christians that do this and wonder why they call themselves Christian if they haven't had a supernatural experience. We tongue speakers look at these as carnal Christians as in 1 Cor 3. Paul was always speaking to them as babies in Christ because they were always carnal and he was trying to get them into the spirit realm. If you don't have supernatural experiences in the church you attend, maybe you should look around a bit. We serve a supernatural God.

In some ways, this video reminds me of the secular media, in that it only gives a biased report in a simple way regarding a complex issue, that is, the view regarding the appropriateness of the operation of the spiritual gifts described in Pau's letter to Corinth. Since I have had some experience with these, I felt the Lord giving me the go ahead to weigh in on it, so here goes. Firstly, I would like to address the issue of whether the "graces" (original word for gifts) are what Paul considered the normal experience for the churches he established. 1 Cor 1:4-7 seems to indicate this to be the case, vs 7 reads "Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed." His later instructions are an elaboration on this topic. There is a reference in Eph 6:18 where Paul says "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and supplications;" this can be viewed 2 ways, in English- either he means allowing the leading of the Spirit while making the prayers and supplications, or he means these 2 kinds of praying to be separate types. It is my opinion that he means the latter, and he is stating the same idea expressed in 1 Cor 14:13-17, vs 15 reads "So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind." In the context of this passage, it is more clear he is speaking of 2 different modes of prayer. This would seem to show that the operation of these gifts was not limited to Corinth, and implies, though not strongly, that Paul considered these a regular part of the result of people believing the gospel message. Acts 10 implies the same idea- vs 10:44-46 "While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God." Luke, the author of Acts, include this account for a reason- he portrays Peter as the first to actually reach out to the Gentiles, even though Paul later features as the prominent messenger to them; however, at this point Peter is considered the chief apostle. Even so, he has to render an account to the other apostles for his actions in disregarding Jewish custom based on Mosaic covenant law. After he relates his story, vs 11:18 of Acts says "When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying 'So then, God has even granted the Gentiles repentance unto life.' There was clear consensus that this was God's work. Second I would like to address the notion of cessationism, which is the view that the gifts described in Corinthians were a temporary activity limited to the time of the early church period. I am obviously not a cessationist, as I said I have experienced the gifts myself. But I understand, to some extent, why someone would be. Before my introduction to Full Gospel Christianity, I had never heard of "tongues" let alone any of the other gifts. Anything "supernatural" in my world had been connected to occult and magic practices, not part of church. My conversion to born again faith was the direct result of hearing an evangelical Full Gospel preacher, so after my conversion experience I started attending there, much to the dismay of my family, who no doubt thought I had gone from bad to worse, since up to that point I had been into partying with my friends! After a year I went off to a Bible College with Pentecostal roots, and graduated. I saw both good and poor aspects of this brand of Christianity, and quickly learned that every denomination has its strengths and weaknesses. In my opinion, those who are resistant to the idea of the supernatural in the church fail to recognize the truth of scripture- the faith of Christ is basically a supernatural ongoing truth. If you remove the supernatural components from the New Testament, you end up with gospel devoid of the power of God, just like Paul warned about in 2 Tim3:5. Is it any wonder that in the light of modern science, materialism, etc that people are loathe to see ritualistic, powerless religion as anything but archaic, irrelevant, and of no value? Much like ancient Rome, there is prosperity, no shortage of options regarding way of life, philosophies abound, as do religions of every stripe. To most, Christianity is just one among many, it offers nothing significantly different. Christianity in the ancient world turned it upside down. The power of the resurrected Jesus was evident, as Paul says in 1 Cor 2:4-5. True Christianity is not just another philosophy, it is about faith being based on the power of God to transform and heal. My third point is: all this emphasis on "tongues" is actually not biblical. When the Holy Spirit fell as recorded in Acts 4 there is just as much emphasis on speaking the word of God boldly. When Peter preached to the Gentiles in Acts 10, they were speaking in tongues AND PRAISING GOD. This doctrine that speaking in tongues is the "sign" of the gift of the spirit is all wrong. The way I see it, scripture tells us the true sign of the Holy Spirit is a fervent desire and boldness to spread the gospel message. Paul himself describes tongues as the least of the gifts- if that is so, why don't the churches promoting these gifts relegate them to proper status, and start doing what Paul said in 1 Cor 14:12, and seek to excel in the gifts that build up the church? When Christians from churches not involved with these practices observe those who are involved disregarding Paul's instruction on their proper function and use, is it any wonder that they have a problem with them? If the churches practicing these gifts exercised them according to the model Paul left, and did things "decently and in order" they could be seen as at least credible- but if they literally ignore Paul's directives in how to conduct themselves, they have only themselves to blame when they are dismissed as "those Charismaniacs." My final point is something I feel is from the Lord, being very serious now. Paul begins his letter to Corinth wasting no time getting to his primary problem with this church- divisions! Is it any wonder that so many reject the gospel when they see Christians arguing, insulting, and condemning one another, especially over positions on doctrine that aren't even close to the core truths of scripture? This subject of gifts is particularly divisive. My impression from the Lord is this- he wants his church to experience all that he has provided for us, and the gifts are a big part of that plan. However, the enemy is working very hard to make it impossible precisely because THEY ARE SO EFFECTIVE. When one country goes to war, the smart tactic is to take out the most effective weapon your enemy has, it is no different in the battle of light vs. darkness. So that's my opinion, not so short is it? Everything we humans do is complicated, so finding a simple answer is never an easy task. But here I'm going to go ahead and quote a bumper sticker- "JESUS IS THE ANSWER." God bless.

This is sadly mostly true and funny even if you’re not a cessationist. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🙏🏻 the benefit of tongues for me in the past was clearer focus in prayer time and getting outside of my present circumstances into a spiritual frame-of-mind; and it can be very effective for that when used personally (not for corporate interpretation). Because so much shade has been thrown on it over the last decade, however, I find myself going that route less and less... and... miraculously, the Lord still speaks to my heart and directs my steps. So maybe we make too much (on both sides) of this issue. The attitude of superiority found in circles that heavily emphasize tongues (especially for salvation, which is crazy-talk), is unfortunately accurate commentary. May all the non-cessationists find grace to hear. ❤️

When Jesus was on the earth, a lawyer asked Him a question: “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. “This is the first and great commandment. “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. “On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:36-40). From these scriptures we learn how important it is for us to love the Lord and our neighbors. But how do we show our love for the Lord? Jesus answered this question when He said, “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father” (John 14:21). Each of us should ask ourselves why we obey God’s commandments. Is it because we fear punishment? Is it because we desire the rewards for living a good life? Is it because we love God and Jesus Christ and want to serve Them? It is better to obey the commandments because we fear punishment than not to obey them at all. But we will be much happier if we obey God because we love Him and want to obey Him. When we obey Him freely, He can bless us freely. He said, “I, the Lord, … delight to honor those who serve me in righteousness and in truth unto the end” (D&C 76:5). Obedience also helps us progress and become more like our Heavenly Father. But those who do nothing until they are commanded and then keep the commandments unwillingly lose their reward (see D&C 58:26-29). How can we increase our desire to obey?

While there may indeed be people who just pretend to speak in tongues, I don't see how the creator of this video can talk about the possibility of speaking in tongues that way after reading 1 Corinthians 14:1-25. Honestly, I wouldn't lean on these videos for biblical truth after seeing how the LutheranSatire handled this topic.

In description he points out he meant Chapter 13. Not sure if that changes your opinion. This video maker is pretty spot on. However, if you are convinced that because Pent.. churches exist, then God must approve of their use of speaking in tongues. Then.... I can't help you. Plus, with all of these videos there is a balance of humor with Theological discussion. It's not always an easy thing to balance, and these videos should not be taken as 'divinely inspired' Peace

One of the guys at the men's ministry I'm a part of at church (RC) was talking about this last video last week and I wanted to check it out for myself lol I died laughing. Padre said it was a little irreverent but not completely blasphemous. I know it's all in good humour 😊 Ya gotta roast every now and then.

Sarcasm&Cringe: well, here it is in the Bible. This is a lot of info, but it proves that NO ONE has miraculous gifts today. Please read every scripture if you want biblical evidence and awareness. Thank you. 2 Tim 3:16-17 Rom 10:17 Eph 1:9 1 COR 14:33 Next Only those who received the Holy Ghost could transfer the Holy Ghost. See Acts 2:1-4 where the Apostles received this gift. Acts 8:14-17 (Acts 19 same) proves this statement. The people in Samaria believed and were baptized, they didn’t receive the gift until Peter and John laid hands and prayed. The big question is why did anyone receive this gift? It was to confirm that Christ was the Messiah. John 16:7 Jesus tells them that the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit/Ghost (same) will not come to them until after He departs. Acts 1:8 Jesus tells them that they will be witnesses (the apostles witnessed Jesus, not us). 1 Cor 13:8-10 These verses teach that prophecy, tongues, and knowledge will someday cease. The question is: When will this occur? They ceased at the end of the apostolic period. The word translated CEASE is the Greek word katargeo, which in this context means "cease of itself." The gift of tongues ceased of itself when the apostles died. These gifts were given to authenticate. Once the Scripture had been completed, there was no more need for signs because the Word of God was then perfect and available. What gift of the Spirit do we receive today? Does the Holy Spirit dwell in Christians today? (2 Tim 1:14, 1 Cor 6:19, Rom 8:9) Yes, but how? The Holy Spirit gives all those whose sins are forgiven through obedience to the gospel a gift, the gift of salvation (Joel 2:32; Acts 2:21). Remission of sins in Acts 2:38 is a condition of salvation which ALWAYS includes baptism, having, therefore, to precede salvation in order to gain deliverance (salvation). Remission of sins and salvation are no more redundant than are “sanctified” and “justified” in 1 Corinthians 6:11. There is a logical sequence in both passages. It is scriptural and logical to conclude that the Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts by faith (Rom 10:17). Paul said to the Ephesians, “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith” (Eph. 3:17). If Christ dwells in us by faith, why not the Holy Spirit by the same process? The Word (Bible) is the Spirit! (Eph 1:13-14) To help you further, consider this evidence: Matthew 5:48=telios (perfect, complete) John 8:7= anamartētos “without sin” It requires much study and prayer of the righteous to gain wisdom in the Word. Don’t let this confuse you. Remember, God is not the author of confusion. Your spirituality is not based on how you feel, it’s based on love and obedience! John 14:15 Jesus said, if you love me, keep my commandments. Christianity is simple, but man has adulterated and complicated it. Gal 5:25 Do you live in the Spirit, do you walk by the Spirit? Bless you and your studies.

Unlikely. As much as I love this guy's work, he does seem to be intent on believing his particular bent to Christianity is the only "true" one, so he seems to have issues as much with the Catholic church as with Pentecostalism.

Exorcisms are unnecessarily lengthy and mostly unbiblical, the ones that do work invariably have a faithful person who's fasted and prayed and at some point through all the mumbo jumbo commands the demon out in the name of Jesus Christ (Which IS Biblical). Demons are subject to the Holy Spirit filled believer, and many come out immediately, though, as Jesus taught, some kinds only come out by prayer AND fasting. Ironically(considering the video), Pentecostals/Apostolics are one of the few movements that have long taken spiritual warfare and deliverance ministries seriously.

j. D. There's nothing wrong thinking your position is the true one. Without such an attitude there will never be any advance in knowledge. What is wrong is thinking others are damned for disagreeing. And I haven't heard this channel say that.

The thing that’s interesting about this though is that many cessationists, like C3PO, seem to think they have the ability to recognize every language spoken in the world. I would love to give all the cessationists who talk about people “speaking in gibberish” a test where they get to hear five sentences of gibberish and five sentences of an obscure African, Asian, or Aboriginal language and see if they can tell me which ones are real language and which aren’t. I bet they can’t, yet they still claim to be able to tell when someone is speaking a real language and when they aren’t.
