I worked on the new hospital in Yellowknife a few years back during construction. It was -56°C for the better part of a 3 week stretch. Didn't get warmer than -30 ... -35 for the 6 weeks I was in town. You are correct... words cannot describe how f*cking brutal that cold really is...

It's kind of fascinating to see rows of passengers in a DC 3 and then come to the realization that your are not looking at a scene out of the 1930s - 1940s but rather out of the 21st century. As a major fan of vintage multi-engine piston airliners it's awesome to see them still running.

@@ZAN-THE-GOAT Yep, things get rough and people get desperate when they start running out of food, medicine, and other life sustaining necessities. Can't say I blame them. Buffalo airways does indeed provide a vital, lifesaving service to those far northern isolated communities. It was sad to hear of Buffalo Joe's passing. He created such a vital service through his lifetime of aviation experience and expertise. In many ways he lives on through the important service his airline provides to the people of the far north.

If I were flying in subfreezing temps and I saw that abnormally high oil pressure rest assured I'd head for home and I'd stay parked until that can be thoroughly checked. Any supplies I was carrying might have to run late but it's better than hitting the floor and ending up with a wrecked plane, wrecked cargo, and coming home in a wooden box.

They need that to stretch the footage they have. Without it the show would only be half as long. I agree though that for people who know how the airplanes operate a version without the personal drama would be better. Half of it sounds overblown, everything is always super critical, eg Community X waits for their new floorboards, if they do not arrive in time the annual Christmas dance isn't in jeopardy. So we bite our nails when they are delayed because the weather in the NWT is sometimes bad.

That's several Ice Pilot videos where they refer to "go-around" or "rejected landing" as "overshoot". It's either a corporate thing or a Canadian thing. An overshoot is when you turn wide base to final, resulting in the airplane going through the runway centerline. Also, UNINTENTIONALLY flying the airplane beyond the safe touchdown zone (whereupon you determine you have overshot the runway), you then execute a go around. Standard Aviation terminology in standard English 😎.

@carlospar3727
@carlospar3727 2 жыл бұрын
@@ahashdahnagila6884 no. There's a Pilot Glossary to help keep aviation operations standardized worldwide. I believe the International Civil Aeronautics Organization chose Standard English, so we have to adhere to the terms ICAO settles on. For example, "Position and Hold" became "Lineup and Wait". So that's the term used worldwide. They could've chosen Standard French for that matter, the idea would be the same. When a pilot calls go-around or ATC directs a go-around, one should be executing a go-around; not trying to decipher a conflicting term that means something else entirely.

I'm no pilot by any means. But if my oil pressure jumps to 150-160 and you are having issues when its at 120 while its normally at 80. I'd have turned around and landed. Because something isn't right. No matter if it drops again, something was wrong and probably still is. No point in risking breaking the engine or crashing the plane and killing the people inside it. The decision to go to Yellowknife with the oil reading seems irresponsible to me.

old junky planes, -40C temps, what could possibly go wrong? Get yelled at, work like a slave for 6-8 mths before you can be a pilot. Work for Buffalo? You must be out of your mind. Not for Buffalo ofc, but anything else, would've been way more fun than what I've been doing and cheaper and far easier in the long run.
