My first C-47 flight in the National Warplane Museum's "Whiskey 7"

Years ago, I had the absolute pleasure of flying from Asheville to Atlanta on a DC-3 with Southern Airways ...it may have been one of the last flights before they went under idk... But the flight attendant showed me to my seat and headed toward the cockpit and I never saw her again even after landing. I think I was the only passenger. I still to this day remember having to grab seat backs to climb up the aisle because I wasn't used to the steep up angle of the tail dragger design. But the take off and landing were very very smoothe. And also, I remember sticking both my legs all the way out in front of me without obstruction. It's a beautiful memory .

How lucky can you get...looks like brand new old stock or some nifty after market glass for the cockpit. Have never seen them that bright and clear! A true revelation. Now, due to weight and girth, I´m resigned to the old AN-2 which also has cockpit glass issues. Singin´: Rain drops keep fallin´ on my head..."

My first commercial flight was on an Allegheny Airlines DC-3. It turned me on to aviation. Subsequently, I was a crew chief on a Marine Corp Super R4d-8, which was the Corps supped up version of the C-47. Among other things it had a fully retractable landing gear. After I got my pilots license, which I did while I was in the Corps, the colonel would let me sit in the right seat and fly the airplane. It was a sweet machine to fly. I cannot imagine what it must have been like for the guys, mostly kids, that flew these airplanes over Nazi occupied Europe during WWII. They were sitting ducks!

Don't give the guy in the Right seat a hard time. They looked to be having a problem w/the Left Eng. Maybe during Mag Check. Kept miss firing one 1 Cylinder. Puff of smoke every once in a while. During taxing, he's watching the gauges. They maybe simple, but you still gotta fly them.

I flew the C-47 in Vietnam. The WORST problem I had with it was NOT in the air. It was on the ground, on landing, when the tail wheel lowered to the ground, as speed was reduced. IF the wind was coming from the rear (called a Rear Quartering tail wind) the vertical tail wound up acting like a HUGE "barn door". Now...under NORMAL operations....when one wants to turn left on the runway, one has to depress the left foot pedal. By doing that the vertical tail section swings to the left. But with that HUGH "barn door"swinging to the left, a rear, quartering tail wind from the right, HITS that barn door, and makes the aircraft pivot to the right, around its center of mass. In other words, it makes the aircraft TURN RIGHT! The fix: When the tail wheel lowers to the runway, one has to "bicycle" the foot pedals so one knows which way to depress them to get the "desired turn results". Many of our pilots joined the "garden club" because they did not know this curious quirk of the C-47.

I think that co-pilot is an instructor or something. He darn sure was a busy co-pilot!! Either way, he was a huge distraction and he took the PIC's attention away from job at hand!! Very dangerous. I mean from the time it left the ground he had the pilot's sight and mind away from what he was doing and at very low altitude!

I live in Indianapolis, so fun to to catch a glimpse of my hometown, the lake and the airfield. I have to agree with the comments about the co-pilot; he kinda got in the way of what little view is afforded by the cockpit windows. Haven't a clue where they landed. Next time they do a video, Mike, sit back and stop fiddling with everything.

What good is standing fire guard in front of the engine? If you get a fire on start-up it's going to come from the exhaust ! so correct position for fire guard is aft of the sngine near the exhaust (as taught by United States Airforce) if a fire comes out the exhaust , usually will blow out when the engine accelerates .
